Under the gloomy sky, in only about half an hour, the Academy of Sciences, that symbol of civilization, had been all but reduced to battlefield ruins.
The flames of war raged, stray bullets whistled, the screams of the wounded rose and fell, and battle cries rang out without pause.
Hidden in bunkers between the buildings, nearly a hundred squads were locked in fierce fighting, pouring out firepower without restraint.
Thanks to prior preparations, the murlocs lying in ambush numbered nearly two thousand, and every one of them was equipped with the latest weapons from their territory. Their combat power was exceptionally fierce.
From the moment they clashed, even with the Northern Military Region, the Inspectorate, and the guards joining forces, they could not gain any advantage. Instead they were pushed into one defeat after another and nearly wiped out.
Only after more than twenty minutes, when the vanguard of the Tianpo Army from neighboring Pojun Town arrived as reinforcements, did the situation gradually settle into a stalemate and stop being one-sided.
Perhaps before the fighting began, neither side had expected it to escalate into such bitter hostility, or to spin so completely out of control.
But war had always been like this. Once you took part, and once one side had paid a heavy price in blood, that side would be unwilling to withdraw.
The situation would then escalate exponentially, until one side was utterly defeated and left with no power to fight back!
In front of the building.
“Tong Lian!!!” Wang Qian cried out in grief as he watched the slightly chubby teammate who usually followed at his side get slapped six or seven meters away by a black monster that suddenly leapt out of the murloc formation.
Realizing that his gun could not pierce the monster’s defenses, he tried to draw his longsword and rush out to save the man.
But several surviving teammates behind him grabbed him and held him back.
“Captain Wang, don’t be impulsive! We can’t even shoot through this monster. If you go in with a blade, you’re just throwing your life away!”
“Let me go! Let me go! Tong Lian is still out there! Tong Lian!”
Roaring again and again, Wang Qian was forcibly dragged back behind the battle line by several men.
By now the Tianpo Army reinforcements numbered nearly a thousand and had basically sealed both the front and rear gates of the Academy of Sciences.
Under a pincer attack like that, the murlocs ought to have collapsed long ago.
But the black monsters that leapt out from time to time kept the front line from advancing and even pushed it back.
Moreover, as the black monsters appeared more and more often, the casualties climbed at a terrifying speed.
“Captain Wang, so much time has passed. The hundreds of murlocs they sent inside must have slaughtered everyone in there by now.”
“That’s right. If we keep charging like this, the casualties will only keep rising. Why don’t we pull back and wait for the main force of the Tianpo Army?”
“Captain Wang, the brothers are almost out of ammunition, and the retired brothers are almost all dead!”
As the highest-ranking commander of the Northern Military Region stationed in Hope City, Wang Qian was surrounded by a knot of people, every face pale with panic.
In frontal combat ability, the Northern Military Region was several times stronger than the Western Military Region.
But this battle had come too suddenly. They had never expected the murlocs to have ambushed so many without anyone noticing, and the Northern Military Region had managed to mobilize only a little over two hundred men, nowhere near enough to match the enemy.
Only with the help of the retired soldiers of the Academy of Sciences had the situation been stabilized at all.
Unfortunately Wang Qian was overwhelmed with grief and his thoughts were in chaos. He had no desire to hear any of it.
Looking at the savage fish faces in the murloc formation in front of the building, he wished he could rush out, grab his great sword, and hack those damned aliens to pieces.
“We can’t retreat. If we retreat, it’s the same as abandoning everyone in the building. Even if we all die here, we must make sure not one of these damned murlocs gets into the building again!”
“Give it to them!”
Seeing the black monster that had charged out finally killed by grenades, Wang Qian’s eyes turned cold, and he was about to wave his hand and give the order.
But suddenly an unearthly roar erupted above everyone’s heads.
Puff!
In a moment of panic, Wang Qian instinctively lunged to the side.
When he turned around, though, he was shocked to find that the soldiers who had just been speaking beside him were gone.
They had been crushed into pieces by a black monster that had appeared out of nowhere!
So this black monster had a stealth ability too!
In front of the Architecture Institute’s research building.
Noticing the complete chaos behind the enemy lines, a tall, burly murloc slowly put down the medicine bottle in his hand, exhaled softly, and smiled.
King’s Medicine was not something just anyone was qualified to take, nor could everyone withstand its side effects and keep enough sanity to go on fighting.
Only true warriors and elite troops were qualified to take it and grow stronger!
“Lord Yu Shi truly lives up to his reputation as a commander temporarily recalled from the front. This tactic is indeed effective!” A short murloc in a black robe clapped in praise as he watched the black monster rampage and slaughter within the enemy lines.
“No. It’s only because the King’s Medicine we developed is so powerful that we’ve achieved results like these.” Realizing the overall situation was settled, Yu Shi could not help being modest.
In truth, just ten minutes earlier he had been extremely nervous, his mind filled with thoughts of how to escape.
Admittedly, the murlocs’s combat strength was remarkable, and the men he had brought were all elite warriors who often fought along the northern coast.
The alien races that landed from the sea had no fighting power whatsoever. Every time they came out, the well-equipped murloc army blasted them to pieces.
But compared with those madmen on the northern front who fought the world’s dwarves every day, without King’s Medicine they probably would not have stood a chance against this enemy.
