“They’ve been spoiled. They have no need to worry about food or clothing; they only ever need to deliver the final blow in a hunt, and on top of that, get paid really well. They enjoy this kind of lifestyle yet still want dignity and freedom.”

“But once they actually have to fight to earn their pride as weapons, they start complaining—so pretentious.”

They decided on the life of a kept man but still demanded a real man’s dignity.

Ning Shu drank her soup and glanced at Mei Ziqing’s wrist. The red mark was now more pronounced, looking like a red string bracelet.

It looked somewhat familiar.

Ning Shu’s eyes whirled, and she asked, “That’s a love’s thread, right?”

Ning Shu pointed at Mei Ziqing’s wrist.

Mei Ziqing covered her wrist with her sleeve and nodded. “It is.”

Love’s thread was an item that could make two people fall in love. If they were in the same plane, the thread would give off guidance—and the closer they were to each other, the warmer it would get.

Some task-taker couples, to express their devotion, would wear the thread after falling in love.

Only when one person dies and a thread breaks does the item lose its effect.

It serves as both a love token—one red string per person, beautiful and romantic—and a locator, allowing the ability to locate other person if they’re on the same plane.

Wearing it was basically a promise, like being handcuffed together. As long as they lived, they would be there for each other through thick and thin.

Back then, Zhang Jiashen had tried to trick her into wearing one.

Seems like in this world, Mei Ziqing and she weren’t the only ones here. There was another task-taker with a strong connection to Mei Ziqing.

Possibly a lover.

Ning Shu said, “We’re companions now. You have to tell me what might happen next—otherwise I’m leaving.”

Ning Shu stood up. Mei Ziqing reached out and grabbed her wrist, and Ning Shu sat back down with the motion.

“As you’ve noticed, there’s another task-taker in this world. He’s my lover—or more accurately, my ex-boyfriend,” Mei Ziqing said.
