Chapter 3530: Owner (11)
At the thought that something might have happened at home, Ying Zhi couldn’t care less about work. He grabbed his cane, took Ning Shu’s leash, and headed for the door. In his haste, he bumped into something and fell to the ground.
He scrambled up in a panic and practically jogged all the way back home.
At the entrance to the residential compound, he ran into Chen Hong’s mother, who was returning from shopping. Seeing Ying Zhi, she asked in surprise, “Why are you back? Weren’t you at work?”
“Beibei dragged me back. Did something happen at home?” Ying Zhi was panting, his face drenched in sweat.
“Everything’s fine,” Chen Hong’s mother said as she used her key to open the door. Ning Shu immediately charged into the house. She saw Chen Hong lying on the floor, and the baby in the cradle had a bluish face. It was clearly carbon monoxide poisoning.
Ning Shu barked loudly. As soon as Ying Zhi entered the house, he smelled the natural gas. “Mom, you didn’t turn off the gas again! Don’t light a fire! Open the windows right now!”
Ying Zhi heard Ning Shu’s anxious barking from inside the room. He rushed toward the bedroom but tripped over a stool and fell. He scrambled up and made his way into the room with his cane.
“Chen Hong! My baby girl!” Chen Hong’s mother opened the kitchen window and ran into the bedroom. Seeing her daughter unconscious, she began to wail. Her body swayed, and then she collapsed to the floor with a thud.
Ying Zhi couldn’t see anything. Now that both women had fainted, he hurriedly pulled out his phone to call 120.
Ning Shu grabbed the baby’s clothes in her mouth and dragged her out of the room. The house was filled with the smell of gas, and the baby was likely poisoned. Adults had better resistance, but a child did not.
Ying Zhi pulled out his phone and called a random contact. Once the call connected, he begged for help, asking the person to call 120 for him because something had happened to his wife and child.
Ning Shu had no choice but to run across the hall and scratch at the neighbor’s door, barking loudly in hopes that someone was home.
The door was opened by a middle-aged woman with curly hair. She shouted grumpily, “What is this damn dog doing? Howling every day, it’s so annoying.”
Ning Shu grabbed her skirt and pulled her toward the apartment. The dog’s actions terrified the woman, but when she saw the baby in the hallway, she immediately asked, “What happened here?”
Then she went inside and saw the two adults fainted on the floor. Ying Zhi was frantically pressing buttons on his phone, which eventually slipped from his hands. He knelt down and began crawling around to feel for it.
“What on earth happened!?”
Hearing the woman’s voice, Ying Zhi pleaded, “Sister, please help me make a call. My wife and child have gas poisoning.”
“Oh, okay, okay.” The woman was also frightened now. She pulled out her phone and dialed 120. While on the phone, she kept urging them to hurry. “There’s a woman and a child here! Their lives are in danger! Can you take responsibility if something happens? Hurry up!”
“Alright, I called. The ambulance should be here soon,” the woman said. “Tell me if there’s anything else you need help with.”
“Thank you, Sister.” Ying Zhi clutched his head and pulled at his hair, consumed with anxiety.
He knelt down to hold Chen Hong, and his tears began to pour down.
“I’ll go downstairs to see if the ambulance has arrived.” The woman hurried out.
Ning Shu rested her head against the baby’s chest to listen for a heartbeat. The baby’s face was bluish and her heartbeat was weak. Long-term oxygen deprivation could cause irreversible brain damage.
The ambulance arrived with its sirens wailing. The paramedics brought up two stretchers, loaded the adults onto them, and put them on ventilators.
A nurse carried the baby onto the vehicle. A family member needed to accompany them, so Ying Zhi got on. Because space was limited, a large Golden Retriever like Ning Shu was not allowed on board.
Ning Shu tugged on the woman’s skirt. The woman immediately said, “Stop pulling. I’ll go along to help.”
“Thank you, Sister,” Ying Zhi said to the woman as she got in.
“Beibei, go home!” Ying Zhi shouted to Ning Shu. The doors closed, and the ambulance sped away.
Ning Shu watched the ambulance disappear into the distance. Her tongue hung low as she panted heavily.
She turned and went back inside the house. The smell had mostly dissipated by now.
It was a good thing no one had lit a fire, or the whole place would have exploded and burned down. Ning Shu suspected that Chen Hong’s mother was developing Alzheimer’s. Otherwise, how could she forget to turn off the gas before leaving?
If Ying Zhi hadn’t come back, the mother likely would have lit the stove as soon as she got home. One could only imagine the consequences. She might have died, and something terrible would have happened to Chen Hong and the baby as well.
Ning Shu sprawled on the floor, her whole body feeling weak and limp.
She didn’t know what the situation was. Had Ying Zhi arrived at the hospital yet?
Ning Shu panted with her tongue out while waiting for news. However, Ying Zhi didn’t return all night, so she waited until morning.
Seeing the phone Ying Zhi had dropped on the floor, Ning Shu struggled to open it with her paws.
It was one of those phones designed for the elderly. Her paws wouldn’t obey her commands. She managed to find the number for Chen Hong’s brother and immediately dialed it.
Once the call connected, she let out two loud barks.
“Is that Beibei?” Chen Hong’s brother said in surprise. Then he said, “Ying Zhi, your dog is calling you.”
Then Ning Shu heard Ying Zhi’s voice. “Beibei…”
Ying Zhi’s voice was thick with tears. He sounded choked up and unclear, making Ning Shu’s heart sink with worry.
What had happened?
“Chen Hong and the baby are fine, but they have mild poisoning. Be a good girl and stay at home. The dog food is in the cabinet and you can reach it yourself. Stay home and be safe.” Ying Zhi spoke to Ning Shu as if she were a human.
Ning Shu gave two barks. Fortunately, they were okay.
But they had gas poisoning. Who knew if there would be any lasting side effects?
After worrying all night, Ning Shu finally felt hungry now that the weight had been lifted from her heart. She pawed open the cabinet and pulled out several bags of dog food. She decided to eat to her heart’s content.
Because of the baby, they had to stay in the hospital for a while to undergo various tests.
Chen Hong’s brother came over to grab some clothes and took Ning Shu to the hospital with him.
Ning Shu ran to Ying Zhi’s feet. Sensing her presence, he knelt down and hugged her, burying his face in her body. His tears soaked through her fur.
Ning Shu let him hold her and cry as much as he needed. Her fur became clumped together in wet tufts.
Ning Shu entered the ward and saw Chen Hong. She was pale but awake.
However, the child was still in intensive care. They said her life was no longer in danger, but since they weren’t sure about potential side effects, they had to keep her for more tests.
“Beibei…” Chen Hong saw Ning Shu by the bed and reached out to stroke her head. “Thank you, Beibei. You were amazing.”
Chen Hong knew what had happened. Her eyes were gentle and full of gratitude as she looked at Ning Shu. Ning Shu gave a soft whine.
