As Gu Jiao pondered, she secretly opened her eyes, stealing a glance at the pillow, only to nearly choke on her own breath!
What did she see?
A little dudu! [T/N: Durex you-know-what XD]
Suppressing the ache in her arms, she carefully crept her two fingers forward, planning to snatch the box back while Xiao Heng wasn’t paying attention and destroy the evidence!
“Already used.” Xiao Heng said calmly.
“Two boxes.”
Gu Jiao: “…!!”
It was a small box, three pieces inside, all sorts of flavors, and the Little Marquis declared that he liked the blueberry one best.
Naturally, as someone from ancient times, he would never use such a thing, which meant it could only be…
Gu Jiao nearly wanted to bang her head against the pillow and die!
She wanted to lose her memory! She wanted to lose her memory!
……
Night had completely fallen.
Gu Jiao was utterly exhausted, not the kind of fatigue that came after a battle when one’s strength was drained, but rather a soreness and weakness she could not even put into words.
“You lack restraint.” She accused first, playing the villain, “Young man, you must have restraint.”
Xiao Heng nodded with a smile, “Yes, yes, it is my fault as your husband. Then, to express my apology, shall I go fetch something for my wife to eat?”
Gu Jiao lifted her small chin and said with utmost seriousness, “Since your attitude is at least sincere enough, fine.”
The light in the room had already been dim, and when that final strand of twilight slipped away, the entire place was plunged into complete darkness.
Worried that light would sting her eyes, Xiao Heng did not light a lamp.
After tidying up a little, he planned to go to his mother’s courtyard to pay his respects, and at the same time ask the cook to prepare some hot dishes to be sent over.
But just as he reached the entrance of Lanting Courtyard, he unexpectedly ran into Yu Jin, who was carrying a food box.
Yu Jin had come to deliver food for the two of them. After all, the whole day had passed, and not eating anything would leave them starving.
A trace of embarrassment flickered across Xiao Heng’s face, but fortunately the cover of night concealed it. He forced himself to remain calm and greeted, “Aunt Yu Jin.”
Yu Jin also could not hold herself back, and let out a chuckle.
Sleeping until this late, everyone knew what had happened.
Xiao Heng could only resign himself to the teasing.
And this was just Aunt Yu Jin. Later, when he faced his parents, that would be even more——
Yu Jin gave him a playful look and said with a smile, “Alright, the Princess and Lord Marquis have taken Yiyi out. You may come to pay your respects tomorrow.”
Xiao Heng let out a silent breath of relief.
Yu Jin handed him the food box, told him to eat with Gu Jiao while it was still hot, and as she left, she gave him a meaningful glance, raising her hand to point toward her own neck.
Understanding at once, Xiao Heng gave a little cough, carried the food box, and returned to Lanting Courtyard.
But Gu Jiao had already fallen asleep again, this time so deeply that he could not wake her no matter how he tried.
Xiao Heng placed the food box on the table, did a bit of simple tidying in the room, and lit a faint oil lamp.
He carried the lamp over to the bronze mirror, and looking at the spot Yu Jin had hinted at, he suddenly broke into a smile, “This girl.”
He set the lamp back on the table and lifted the bed curtains, wanting to check on her condition, only to discover that she looked even more pitiful than himself.
Now this was awkward.
“So it really was me who lacked restraint…”
Hurriedly, he tucked the blanket snugly around Gu Jiao.
But Gu Jiao felt hot, turned over, and the cheek that had been facing inward now shifted toward him.
Earlier the room had been too dark, and Xiao Heng had had no chance to see her face clearly. Now, in the glow of the oil lamp, he focused and was so startled that he instantly grabbed the stool lying on the floor!
Who are you!
“Mm…” Gu Jiao murmured dreamily in her sleep.
He froze, as if waking from a dream, and once again studied her face carefully.
The lips, nose, brows, and eyes were hers, but the bright red birthmark that had once stained the left side of her face was gone. Her skin was flawless as jade, beautiful as though she were some slumbering celestial fairy.
Xiao Heng was utterly stunned.
Even the stool slipped from his hand.
It was only when it dropped onto his shoulder with a painful thud that he hurriedly caught it, lest it fall to the ground and wake her.
His eyes shifted to the crimson stain left on the embroidered handkerchief, then back to her breathtaking face. In disbelief, he murmured, “It truly is the gecko cinnabar…”
……
Gu Jiao knew nothing about her own appearance, and she slept all the way until the morning of the twentieth.
Xiao Heng had risen early and was seated by the window, reading a book.
The morning light streamed through the lattice, falling upon his handsome, jade-like face; such a pleasing sight to behold at daybreak made Gu Jiao feel that her mood was exceptionally good.
Xiao Heng had been holding this pose for half an hour, his body nearly stiff, just to present his most perfect and dashing side to a certain someone.
He calmly put the book down, turned his head toward her, and with a gentle smile said, “You’re awake. Did you sleep well? Are you still tired?”
Her husband’s smile was truly beautiful.
Gu Jiao’s lips curved unconsciously, not realizing how utterly captivating her smile could be.
“Much better.” she said. “I am someone who has fought battles before, this bit of exertion I can still handle!”
But just as she stood up, her legs gave way, and she collapsed back down again.
Gu Jiao: “…”
Xiao Heng: “…”
Sitting for a while to steady herself, Gu Jiao finally adapted. She glanced at the sleeping robe she wore and asked, “Did you dress me in this?”
“Mm.” Xiao Heng nodded.
“Thank you.” said Gu Jiao.
Xiao Heng’s smile was warm and gentle. “It was my greatest honor.”
Shouldn’t the proper response have been to blush in embarrassment and say, if you mind, I won’t take such liberties next time?
Gu Jiao narrowed her eyes at him: his cultivation has deepened again!
Still, such a husband was rather amusing.
Retracting her gaze, Gu Jiao asked, “How many days did I sleep?”
“Two days.” Xiao Heng answered.
“I actually slept that long… no wonder my throat isn’t hoarse anymore…” Gu Jiao muttered under her breath, then seriously asked, “Then, did I miss the tea ceremony for the Princess and the Marquis?”
She remembered that before the wedding, her mother had reminded her that on the second day of marriage, she must serve tea to her parents-in-law.
If other relatives of the household were present, she would also need to greet them with courtesy.
The Old Madame and Old Master of the Xiao Family had long since passed away, and the family’s second branch along with the two illegitimate sons of Marquis Xuanping were stationed at the eastern border, so there were no other elders in the household she was required to pay respects to.
Xiao Heng said, “It’s fine, they were not at home yesterday.”
“Are they home today?” Gu Jiao asked.
Xiao Heng smiled faintly. “When you are well rested, they will be home.”
Ever since Gu Jiao came to the ancient times, she had rarely looked in a mirror. The reason was the birthmark on her face; out of sight, out of mind. So even after she finished washing, she still had not noticed the change in her appearance.
Xiao Heng, faced with the choice of telling her or letting her discover it herself, chose the latter.
Yu Ya’er, hearing movement inside, entered to attend to Gu Jiao’s washing.
The moment she stepped in, she froze in shock, staring at the unfamiliar young woman in the room. “Y-you are…”
“What’s wrong with me?” Gu Jiao asked strangely.
It was her young miss’s voice.
This person——
Is young miss?!

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
