After the dragon and phoenix twins were frightened during their brief trip outside the imperial palace, Shangguan Yan instructed the young couple to remain in the palace for the time being, to avoid wandering about, and to focus on spending quiet, peaceful time with their children.

Inside the cradle within the bed chamber of the Fenglin Palace, Gu Jiao looked at the two little ones who seemed even more energetic than baby birds, and could not help but deeply doubt where exactly anyone saw signs of them being frightened.

They looked perfectly fine, did they not?

“I’m going to the military camp.” Gu Jiao said calmly.

The two little ones immediately pouted, their mouths drooping in unison.

“You are not allowed to cry.” Gu Jiao said in her usual even tone.

The two babies, though on the verge of tears, swallowed their cries back with visible effort, their big eyes filled with reluctant grievance.

Standing beside them, Wu Sixi felt her heart ache terribly. The little highnesses were only five months old, how could their mother be so hard-hearted? Could she not see that they were still startled and needed their mother’s comfort?

But that was far from the truth.

They needed comfort? Nonsense. They were just pretending to be pitiful.

They were her own flesh and blood, so how could Gu Jiao not see through their act?

It seemed that in the past two months, the two little ones had learned quite a few dramatic tricks from the palace courtiers.

Without hesitation, Gu Jiao set out for the Black Wind Cavalry.

When Gu Jiao had returned to the State of Zhao to marry, she had brought along five thousand soldiers from the Black Wind Cavalry. Both Wen Renchong and Zhao Dengfeng had accompanied her; they were among the first to know that Gu Jiao was a woman and had also seen her true appearance.

However, the rest of the soldiers had not.

Among those who had never seen her true face was Li Shen.

When Li Shen returned victorious from battle that year, he had gone immediately to visit his elderly mother. Later, when Gu Jiao traveled back to the State of Zhao, he had been qualified to accompany her, but he chose to remain in Shengdu to care for his mother instead.

Just as Gu Jiao reached the entrance of the military camp, Li Shen came galloping out from within.

That day, Gu Jiao was dressed as a woman, wearing a long blue gown. Her hair was coiled into a simple single spiral bun, and her hair ribbon and sleeves danced lightly in the morning breeze under the sunlight. Her presence carried a quiet, ethereal grace.

The military camp was not a place women were permitted to enter. Even if one somehow came, she would have to dismount before approaching.

Li Shen was about to sternly stop her when his gaze fell upon her face.

It was a beauty too extraordinary to describe, carrying both the purity and liveliness of a maiden as well as the heroic spirit of a youth. Her beauty was unlike any other he had ever seen.

Li Shen, who had never judged people by their looks, found himself momentarily struck dumb.

Even the soldiers guarding the gate were utterly astonished.

Who was this young lady?

Had a celestial maiden descended from the heavens?

What was she doing in their military camp?

“Li Shen.” Gu Jiao called out from atop Black Wind King’s back.

“You… you know me?” Li Shen had never heard Gu Jiao speak in a woman’s voice. He stared at her blankly. Though it was improper for a man to look directly at a woman’s face, her beauty was so striking that he completely forgot his manners.

Then Gu Jiao switched back to her old youthful voice and said, “It’s me.”

Li Shen’s whole body trembled. He fell off his horse face-first, landing flat on the ground in a most spectacular fall.

A celestial-looking girl suddenly speaking with a boy’s voice, who wouldn’t be terrified?

But wait. Why did that voice sound strangely familiar?

He quickly lifted his head and looked toward Gu Jiao again.

This time, his gaze was not on her face but on the horse she was riding.

“Black Wind King…” His expression changed, and his eyes slowly rose back up to that flawless, breathtaking face. “You are… Young Commander?”

The guards at the gate were all stunned.

This celestial-looking maiden… was their Black Wind Cavalry’s young commander, who had killed countless enemies on the battlefield?

The news that the young commander was actually a woman had long spread throughout the camp, and it was also said that the birthmark on her face had been healed. Yet seeing her in person was still far more shocking than hearing the rumors.

That rough, flawed-faced, yet oddly endearing young commander, how had she suddenly turned into such an ethereal fairy?

Gu Jiao’s arrival caused an uproar throughout the entire Black Wind Cavalry. Not only were the soldiers beside themselves in astonishment, but even the horses ran over to see her.

Then Gu Jiao noticed that the camp was much quieter that day. The soldiers no longer stomped about so heavily, nor did they shout as loudly as usual. Though it had rained the previous night and the morning air was cool, everyone’s cheeks were flushed bright red.

Gu Jiao sat upon her horse and tilted her head slightly, letting out a soft , “Hmm.”

……

Gu Jiao had come to the military camp for two reasons; first, to visit the comrades who had once fought alongside her through life and death, and second, to organize the troops in preparation for an upcoming expedition to attack the Tang Sect.

However, what happened next was quite unexpected.

She only needed three thousand soldiers and had instructed a few commanding officers to select precisely that number. Yet, when she stepped out of her tent, she was met with a startling sight. The entire fifty thousand troops were assembled on the training grounds.

“What are you all doing?” She asked, clearly puzzled.

Zhao Dengfeng, who had recently been promoted to the position of Left Commander of the Assault Battalion, coughed lightly before speaking. “The Third Assault Battalion requests permission to go to battle!”

Wen Renchong, who had also received a promotion, composed himself and said in a solemn tone, “The Second Assault Battalion requests to go to battle!”

It was only a hidden sect they were going to fight, was it not a bit excessive to mobilize fifty thousand soldiers for that?

Gu Jiao blinked and asked, “You all want to go attack the Tang Sect?”

“Yes!”

Everyone stood up straight, responding in perfect unison, their voices shaking the air with fervent energy.

Gu Jiao made a soft sound of acknowledgment and said, “Alright then. Since you all wish to go, go ahead. On your way, you can also help to wipe out the bandits in the area. I’ve heard that region is overrun with them, so you may as well do something good for the common folk.”

Cheng Fugui, who had been promoted to General Huwei of the Black Wind Cavalry, which was the highest rank under Gu Jiao and Xuanyuan Qi, spoke in a righteous tone, “Young Commander, may I ask when we will be setting off?”

Gu Jiao said, “As for the exact time of departure, you’ll have to ask the Supreme Commander.”

Cheng Fugui froze. “Why… do we need to ask the Supreme Commander? Young Commander, aren’t you coming with us?”

Gu Jiao replied earnestly, “I’m not going. I have another important matter to attend to. I must make a trip to Hidden Night Island. Originally, I planned to select a cavalry unit to accompany me, but since you all wish to go and suppress the bandits, I can instead request troops from the Shadow Division.”

Cheng Fugui stammered in disbelief.

So after all that excitement, they weren’t actually following their Young Commander into battle?

What was so interesting about the Supreme Commander?

Their Young Commander JiaoJiao was soft-spoken, adorable, and infinitely more lovable!

Inside, all fifty thousand soldiers were crying bitterly, their hearts twisting with regret until their very intestines turned green.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
