Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng stayed in Shengdu for a month.

During that time, they visited every teacher and friend they knew there. Among them were the Dean of Tianqiong Academy, Teacher Wu, and several of their former classmates and teammates.

No one could believe that the valiant Xiao Liulang, braver than any young man, was actually a woman, and one so breathtakingly beautiful at that.

“That birthmark from before, it was something you drew on purpose, wasn’t it? To disguise yourself as a man?” Mu Chuan asked as he looked at Gu Jiao’s face under the pavilion of the academy.

Seated across from Gu Jiao were Yuan Xiao and Zhao Wei.

Their old five-man polo team was almost complete, save for Mu Qingchen, who was not present.

Gu Jiao smiled faintly. “If that’s what you think, then so be it.”

She certainly could not tell him that it had actually been a gecko cinnabar mark.

Yuan Xiao and Zhao Wei looked a little awkward, not because of anything she said, but because they remembered how, back then, they had once dragged Liulang along to visit a brothel together.

Thinking back on it now, they truly felt like complete scoundrels.

“Ahem.” To ease the awkwardness, Zhao Wei brought up a new topic. “I heard that Zhong Ding has returned to the State of Qing, and Zhou Tong has transferred to another academy. After you stopped coming, Young Master Qingchen also stopped attending classes.”

“My fourth brother went off to war, didn’t he, Liulang?” Mu Chuan said with a smile to Gu Jiao. He still preferred to call her by that name, Xiao Liulang.

Gu Jiao did not mind the name. She nodded. “Yes, we both spent a long time stationed at the border.”

“But the war is over now, and he still hasn’t come back to class.” Zhao Wei sighed. “Sometimes when I pass by the Mingxin Hall, I see that the seats you two used to occupy are still empty. The classmates there always leave those places open for you. But I suppose neither of you will ever come back to study, will you?”

A sense of melancholy rose quietly in all their hearts.

Yuan Xiao sighed and said, “It feels like only yesterday when we played that polo match together. Do you still remember those Shaolin monks we faced? Didn’t they almost break Mu Chuan’s arm? If it weren’t for Liulang, it wouldn’t just have been about losing the game, we’d all have been crippled. Honestly, we should have realized back then that Liulang was no ordinary person.”

Mu Chuan suddenly laughed and said, “Liulang deliberately went easy on Canaan Academy back then, all for the ten thousand taels of gold given to the second-place winner. Later, when Liulang was no longer around, our academy did indeed win second place as expected. Unfortunately, I was being nosy and exchanged our reward for an audience with the Emperor instead.”

Zhao Wei gave him a look of utter disdain. “So you actually knew that Liulang wanted the gold?”

Mu Chuan sighed helplessly. “I only found out later.”

Yuan Xiao corrected him, “It wasn’t ten thousand taels, it was one thousand. When did that rumor even start? Somehow everyone ended up believing the prize was ten thousand taels of gold.”

Gu Jiao crossed her arms and glared at Mu Chuan, her expression dark. “I still feel like punching you even now.”

Mu Chuan was left speechless.

“The wine’s here! The wine’s here!”

Teacher Wu came striding briskly toward them, carrying two large jars of fine wine.

He squeezed Yuan Xiao out of the way and plopped himself down beside Gu Jiao with a loud thud. Smiling broadly, he said to the group, “This is my daughter’s red wine, aged for twenty years! I didn’t even open it for my own daughter’s wedding! But tonight, we’ll drink until none of us can stand!”

……

“You really aren’t going to join them for a few drinks?”

By the artificial hill near the pavilion, the Dean of Tianqiong Academy, Dean Cen, turned to the man beside him, Mu Qingchen.

Inside the pavilion, the others were clinking their cups, laughing, and drinking merrily.

Mu Qingchen watched in silence, his tone calm and steady as he replied, “No.”

Since he had already missed his chance, there was no point in disturbing her anymore.

Mu Chuan was completely drunk, hugging an enormous wine jar as if it were his life. Fearing someone would take it away, he staggered around the pavilion in circles while slurring loudly, “Liulang, do you know? My sister… Su Xue… the third young lady of the Su Family… she’s married now!”

“She thought you were a man… She said she’d marry no one else but you… but my Fourth Brother also… also liked you… Tell me, you… you were clearly a man… so how did both of them… end up falling for you…”

“Ah… no wait… you’re a woman… Su Xue found out… she cried so hard… and after crying, she went and got married…”

“You… You… you’ve had enough to drink, haven’t you? Don’t… Don’t you dare take that wine jar with you!” Zhao Wei, equally drunk, chased Mu Chuan around the pavilion, trying to snatch it away.

Mu Chuan stuck out his tongue and mumbled, “I’m not giving it to you… no way… if you want it, come and get it yourself…”

The group was utterly drunk, swaying and stumbling in every direction.

Teacher Wu lay sprawled on the ground, and Yuan Xiao had his head resting on the man’s stomach.

Gu Jiao had long since passed out. She was slumped over the table, her cheeks flushed red as she slept soundly, breathing softly.

Dean Cen had already left.

Mu Qingchen stood alone under the moonlight, silent and unmoving, his gaze never once straying from Gu Jiao.

When Mu Chuan began to stumble toward her, intent on pulling her up to drink some more, Mu Qingchen could no longer hold himself back.

He clenched his fists, his expression complicated, and finally stepped out from behind the artificial hill, heading toward the pavilion.

Yet he had barely taken a few steps when a figure in moon-white robes appeared from another direction.

The man walked up to the pavilion and stopped Mu Chuan, who fell backward with his wine jar and promptly fell asleep.

The newcomer bent down and whispered softly beside Gu Jiao’s ear, “JiaoJiao.”

“Mm?” Gu Jiao murmured sleepily, first opening her left eye, then her right. A face as handsome and refined as carved jade came into view.

She smiled faintly. “Ah Heng…”

“Let’s go home.” Xiao Heng said gently.

“Carry me.” Gu Jiao mumbled drowsily.

“Alright.” Xiao Heng extended his long, strong arms, wrapping one around her back and the other beneath her knees, and lifted her into his embrace with great care.

Gu Jiao nestled against his firm chest, as quiet and soft as a little kitten.

Mu Qingchen’s fists tightened even more.

On the ground, Mu Chuan mumbled incoherently, “Liulang… this might be… the last time… I drink with you… the Mu Family…”

The Mu Family was about to fall.

He would no longer be one of Shengdu’s noble young masters.

He thought back to those early days, when she had been a nameless student from a small country whom no one respected, while he had been a proud disciple of the Mu Family whom everyone tried to curry favor with.

In just two short years, he was about to become a prisoner, while she had risen to become the noble and revered young commander and a Princess Consort.

Looking up at the bright moon above, he smiled through his tears. “Life… truly is unpredictable… I suppose… we won’t be able to remain friends anymore…”

Xiao Heng paused in his steps and looked down at the woman sleeping soundly in his arms, who had not heard a single word of Mu Chuan’s drunken lament. Without turning back, he carried her into the depths of the night.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
