The three little ones were sensible kids who rarely disturbed their parents, usually choosing instead to pester Uncle Shangguan Qing, but now that Xuanyuan Xi had returned, the three of them switched targets and began pestering him instead.

Xuanyuan Xi once again experienced the despair of being dominated by the little beans, as he was dragged out of his blankets at daybreak by the “baby army” led by Xiao Yan.

Children really do have astonishing amounts of energy.

Today, the three of them wanted to go horseback riding.

More precisely, it was Xiao Yan who wanted to ride, and she single-handedly cast all three votes herself, with Xiao Cong’s opposition being entirely invalid.

Xuanyuan Xi led three little tails with him to look for Little Eleven.

At this moment Little Eleven was not in the stables, having gone to provoke the Black Wind King for fun, only to be chased relentlessly by the Black Wind King and to flee all the way onto the frozen lake, where it slipped and fell straight into a full split.

The Black Wind King was the same age as Gu Jiao, twenty-four this year, which for a warhorse already counted as venerable old age.

Ordinary warhorses begin entering old age at sixteen, their backs gradually sagging and their muscles atrophying and losing strength, yet these signs seemed not to have appeared on the Black Wind King at all.

It was still powerful and robust.

Little Eleven got beaten so badly it didn’t even know how bad it was.

After being away for a year, it thought its wings had hardened, only to realize upon returning that it had simply been naive.

Little Eleven felt wronged.

However, if one looked carefully, the difference could still be seen.

In the past, when the Black Wind King chased and beat it, its face wouldn’t redden and it wouldn’t even be out of breath, but now, after finishing the beating, it stood in place and panted for a long while.

Little Eleven struggled to its feet with a mane thoroughly messed up from the beating, walked over to the Black Wind King, and nudged it with its head.

As if asking, hey, are you alright?

The Black Wind King walked away proudly.

Its back, in the end, was no longer as firm and straight as it had been in its youth.

Over these more than seven years, countless warhorses from various states had challenged its authority, and it had never once feared a challenge, using absolute strength to defend the honor of the Black Wind Cavalry and to forge a legend that belonged to it alone.

It walked through the bitterly cold snowfields with rough breaths, yet its steps remained elegant and its posture composed, carrying an air of innate killing intent and kingly dominance.

Little Eleven followed silently behind it, mischievously stepping into its hoofprints.

The Black Wind King turned its head.

Little Eleven stared blankly at it, then split its mouth wide and grinned at it with a big smile.

The Black Wind King silently withdrew its gaze and continued forward with pride.

……

During the first lunar month, the imperial palace was immersed in a jubilant Spring Festival atmosphere, but one day, a piece of news from the border of the State of Zhao abruptly shattered this mood.

The western borders of the State of Zhao had been breached, with more than ten cities lost!

“Was it done by the State of Liang?” Gu Jiao asked the guard who had delivered the message.

The western borders of the State of Zhao actually bordered the State of Yan, but the State of Yan would not do such a thing and had no reason to do so, which left only the State of Liang.

The State of Liang lay to the southwest of the State of Zhao, though it was farther away than the State of Yan and separated by a long stretch of waterways.

The guard hurriedly said, “I misspoke, I misspoke, it wasn’t the western borders, it was the eastern borders!”

“The State of Chen?” Gu Jiao still remembered the Yuegu City defense battle from eight years ago with perfect clarity, and she could not help asking, “How could the State of Chen possibly end up fighting the State of Zhao?”

Had Yuan Tang gone mad?

Two years earlier, the Emperor of the State of Chen had passed away, and Yuan Tang had ascended the throne.

He had once offended Bo Qingwang, and he had also fallen out with the Rong Family, the maternal clan of Imperial Consort Rong, so his situation within the State of Chen was far from as peaceful as it appeared on the surface, which made it all the more puzzling as to where he could have found the leisure and resources to meticulously launch an attack on the State of Zhao.

What was more, Yuan Tang had no reason to do such a thing at all.

The guard braced himself and said, “It seems… it’s not the main army of the State of Chen, but the State of Wei’s troops!”

Two questions surged up in Gu Jiao’s mind at once: why would the State of Wei attack the State of Zhao, and how had the State of Wei’s army managed to enter the State of Chen so smoothly?

The guard added, “There’s also something else, the name of that Prime Minister Liu has been identified by the Shadow Division, and it’s Liu Yisheng.”

Although she had already had her suspicions, when the moment of confirmation truly arrived, Gu Jiao was still deeply shaken.

The State of Zhao probably never would have dreamed that the Liu Family’s orphaned survivor, who had once been bullied throughout Zhao’s capital like a rat crossing the street with everyone shouting and beating him, would eight years later return at the head of State of Wei’s forces, smash straight through the State of Zhao’s borders, and seize twelve cities in one fell swoop.

Gu Jiao murmured, “He is Yuan Tang’s cousin, so when his army entered the State of Chen, Yuan Tang would naturally give him this courtesy, but the military strength of the State of Zhao is no joke either, so how did it fall to this extent?”

The guard sighed and said, “Speaking of which, it was also a matter of unfortunate timing, as Marquis Xuanping had accompanied Princess Xinyang back to her fief to stay for a while and was not at court, and Old Marquis Ding’an was already advanced in years, so the most suitable commanders to face the enemy were the newly appointed Gu Family Army Commander Gu Changqing and the Supreme Commander, Tang Yueshan.”

Gu Jiao frowned and said, “The odds of victory for those two should have been very high.”

The guard replied, “They were very high, and the problem didn’t lie with either of them, but rather with the State of Zhao’s Emperor imitating the State of Yan and sending the Crown Prince to lead the campaign in the Emperor’s stead in order to bolster morale, who could have imagined that——”

Gu Jiao finished the sentence for him, saying, “Who could have imagined that the Crown Prince was a complete fool, fell into someone else’s trap, and issued blind, incompetent commands on the battlefield, utterly ruining the three armies.”

The guard nodded and said, “That’s exactly it.”

“Who was the schemer?” Gu Jiao asked.

“The Fourth Prince… En Wang.” the guard answered.

Gu Jiao could barely recall such a person in her memory anymore, and it was only upon mentioning him now that she remembered having once crossed paths with the Fourth Prince when she had first arrived in the capital.

When Liu Yisheng fell ill, the Fourth Prince had been displeased that she treated Liu Yisheng and had deliberately caused trouble for her in the street, only stopping after accidentally running into Marquis Xuanping.

However, this person’s presence had never been particularly strong, nor had he ever seemed capable of causing major trouble, so Gu Jiao had promptly forgotten about him.

Who could have thought that after lying low for ten years, he would end up stabbing the Crown Prince so viciously at a critical moment?

Gu Jiao asked, “Did he collude with the Wei Army?”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
