Gu Jiao asked, “Did he collude with the Wei Army?”
“Yes.” The guard replied.
Gu Jiao said coolly, “He used to despise Liu Yisheng the most, yet now he actually colluded with Liu Yisheng against his own country, how truly ironic.”
“Isn’t it?” The guard sighed, “But he didn’t come to a good end either, because once the matter was exposed, Prime Minister Liu immediately turned around and reported him, sending all the evidence of colluding with the enemy and betraying the country to the State of Zhao’s capital and placing it directly into the Emperor’s hands, which enraged the Emperor to the point of falling ill on the spot, and now it is Empress Dowager Zhuang who is handling court affairs.”
At this point, the guard could not help but exclaim with feeling, “Liu Yisheng is truly ruthless!”
First he tempted the Fourth Prince into colluding with the enemy and betraying the state, then he used the Fourth Prince to bewitch the Crown Prince, chilling the hearts of the three armies and chilling the hearts of the people under Heaven.
In the end, he even drove a knife straight into the Emperor’s heart.
No wonder he was able to help the King of Wei unify the thirteen subtribes, because such methods and such schemes were simply terrifying.
The guard sighed once more and said, “After this great battle, regardless of whether the State of Zhao ultimately falls or not, the futures of these two sons are effectively ruined.”
The common people would never accept a prince who colluded with the enemy and betrayed his country, nor would they submit to a Crown Prince who had lost half the realm.
“Who was the accompanying commander?” Gu Jiao asked.
The guard said, “Gu Changqing. When the Crown Prince was captured, he fought to the death to rescue him and was himself gravely wounded.”
He paused, hesitating to speak further.
Gu Jiao continued for him, saying, “If the Emperor wants to preserve the Crown Prince, then he must find a suitable scapegoat and claim that everything was the result of that person’s unauthorized actions, and there is no one more suitable for that role than the Gu Family’s Army Commander, but if the Emperor truly does this, then he will also alienate the Gu Family Army, leaving himself completely isolated.”
The more the guard pondered it, the more chilled he felt, and he said, “This Liu Yisheng… his calculations really do run frighteningly deep!”
……
After hearing the news, Xuanyuan Xi rushed into Gu Jiao’s study at the first moment and said urgently, “JiaoJiao! I’ll go and meet them in battle, I’ll take back the cities of the State of Zhao!”
He had grown up in the State of Zhao, and the State of Zhao was also his home.
“You wait for my news in Shengdu!”
This time, however, Gu Jiao did not allow him to go alone.
……
In the second month, the State of Zhao suffered the loss of yet another city.
Gu Changqing went into battle despite his injuries, and together with Gu Chengfeng he led the Gu Family Army in a desperate counterattack, recapturing two cities.
Yet the Wei army seemed completely unconcerned with the plundering behind them and focused only on advancing deeper into the heartland of the State of Zhao, as if saying that if you take one city back, they would simply seize another, and it would come down to who was faster.
It was under such circumstances that Gu Jiao encountered the Wei army head-on.
It was a spring morning still tinged with biting cold, the sky gloomy and overcast with heavy clouds, as the two forces faced each other in tense confrontation along the banks of the Licheng River.
Gu Jiao, clad in red robes and dark armor, sat astride the awe-inspiring Black Wind King with an icy expression, while at her side were Little Eleven, also armored, and Xuanyuan Xi.
Though it was called an army, in truth there were only the two of them.
The rest were still on the road, as their warhorses could not run as fast as the Black Wind King and Little Eleven.
The Wei army was delighted, because with a full five thousand troops, capturing two people alive was hardly more than child’s play.
“Who goes there?” Asked one of the Wei commanders, a young general surnamed Mo who was not yet thirty.
Xuanyuan Xi urged his horse forward a step and said with youthful arrogance, “My sister’s name is not something you are worthy to ask for, so have Liu Yisheng come out!”
The presence of Gu Jiao and Xuanyuan Xi was undeniably formidable, but they were simply too young, as Gu Jiao was already twenty-four yet had a youthful face that made her look under twenty, and Xuanyuan Xi went without saying, being only thirteen and utterly incapable of convincingly passing as an adult.
Coupled with the fact that the two of them were practically alone, General Mo did not take them seriously at all.
Gu Jiao said calmly, “I want to see Liu Yisheng.”
General Mo sneered disdainfully and said, “Prime Minister Liu is someone you can see just because you say so? What do you think you are? I’ll put it plainly here, even if a prince of your State of Zhao came, our lord still wouldn’t see him!”
The moment his words fell, a white shadow suddenly flashed from the rear of the Wei army and shot straight toward Gu Jiao.
Gu Jiao did not dodge.
Xuanyuan Xi’s first reaction was that it was a sneak attack, and he was just about to draw his bow and shoot it dead when Gu Jiao lightly pressed down on his wrist.
The little white shadow darted straight into Gu Jiao’s arms.
Gu Jiao caught the chubby little ball and asked in surprise, “Little Ten?”
“Meow~” It rubbed itself against Gu Jiao.
Nine years earlier, Gu Jiao had left it in Liu Yisheng’s care, and back then it had only been a tiny kitten, but now it had grown several sizes larger, heavy and solid, almost filling Gu Jiao’s entire embrace.
“Ah, it, it really is Little Ten?” Xuanyuan Xi stared in shock.
He had only ever heard JiaoJiao mention Little Ten and had never actually seen it before.
The Wei army was even more astonished.
They had already recognized the cat as their own Prime Minister’s beloved pet, as Prime Minister Liu adored this cat to the extreme and took it with him wherever he went, making it the only creature that could shred the Prime Minister's documents into pieces without ever fearing punishment.
It was pampered, ferocious, extremely difficult to serve, and disliked being close to people.
Other than the Prime Minister himself, no one could touch it.
It was even said that the Emperor of the State of Chen had once been scratched by it.
And now it was actually… throwing itself into the arms of a complete stranger?
Were their eyes deceiving them?
Or had that young person used some trick to lure it over?
General Mo drew his sword from his waist with a sharp motion and shouted, “Release the Prime Minister’s beloved pet at once, or be killed without mercy!”
“Stop!”
A cold voice sounded from the rear, and General Mo froze at the sound.
The Wei army automatically parted to form a path, and a man clad in Wei armor slowly rode forward on horseback.
Xuanyuan Xi did not recognize him.
Gu Jiao, however, felt that he looked somewhat familiar. She stared at him for several seconds, then furrowed her brow and said, “Jun Xiuhan?”
Jun Xiuhan was a student at Canaan Academy in the State of Yan, and eight years ago, when the selection for the commander of the Black Wind Cavalry was held, he had been Gu Jiao’s rival.
He had successfully advanced to the final round, but in the bamboo forest, he had voluntarily handed his bamboo tube over to Gu Jiao, telling her, “I owe someone a favor, and now I return it to you.”
Gu Jiao had never understood exactly who he had been referring to.
Could it be——
Jun Xiuhan rode his horse up to stand before Gu Jiao, and Xuanyuan Xi blocked with his long spear, saying, “Don’t come too close to my sister!”
Hearing him call her “sister,” there was no trace of surprise in Jun Xiuhan’s eyes. He looked at Gu Jiao calmly and said in a quiet tone, “Commander Xiao, we meet again. Lord Liu wishes to see you.”

PLEASE CHECK OUT OUR NEW PROJECT:
Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
