The Martial Mage

Chapter 135: The forgotten truth (1)

Drake parried Tess's nails with his sword. He instantly appeared by her side and hit at the back of her neck with a knifehand strike. Just like the heretic, her eyes rolled back and she fainted. Drake held her body from falling down and slowly laid her down on the ground.

"Don't worry. I was not trying to harm her." Drake said, looking towards Anna. She sighed out in relief. For a moment she was petrified, thinking Drake would cut Tess down.

"Move these two to the interrogation room and I'll take the girls with me." Anna ordered the enforcers behind her back, that had just arrived with the head.

"But lady Anna, the girls should be…"

"Don't worry captain Grim. I'll be taking responsibility for them." Drake said in a solemn tone.

"A-Ah…yes, lord Drake." Grim bowed and didn't say more.

"Should we shift the girls to the family house in the city, lady Anna?" Bren asked Anna.

"Yes. Let them stay in my room. Arrange a few more beds." Anna said.

"But…" Bren was taken aback. To give up her own room, he was hesitating a bit to accept this command.

"There are many rooms. Don't worry. I am giving my room to them because it's the safest one."

"I understand lady Anna." Bren bowed and accepted the command.

"What about these two, sister?" Layla asked, pointing at the two heretics that were being carried by the enforcers.

"We are finally able to catch those bastards alive Layla. I'll fucking skin them alive if I have to. And make sure they spit out their secrets." Anna said as the corners of her lips lifted into a smirk.

"What do you mean senior? How can I have dragon blood?" Noah asked, confusion and surprise written all over his face.

"I mean what I said. You have a dragon bloodline lying dormant in your veins." Stormbreaker said.

"But…how can that be possible?" Noah was still in disbelief. His father was the patriarch of the Starlink family. Even his mother was from a noble lineage of humans. He had never heard of a single ancestor of his being a dragon. No matter what Stormbreaker says, it was an unbelievable statement for him.

"Has any ancestor from your mother or father's side had dragon bloodline?" Luke asked.

"No! I've never heard of anyone. Nor is there any record of any such descendant of the Starlink family or from my mother's family." Noah denied fiercely.

All of them went silent. No explanation could be thought of to satisfy this claim. Stormbreaker released a deep sigh. He moved his head up and started speaking to them.

"I don't think I should tell you this. But seeing all of your faces filled with doubt and uncertainty, I'll tell you enough so as to not inflict karma." Stormbreaker said. The four of them looked up at him, curios as to what was it that he couldn't even say to them. After a brief pause, Stormbreaker started speaking again.

"This is a story that dates back almost two thousand years back. there was a time when there used to be seven realms, and all of them were accessible to each other. the dragons used to rule the middle realm, where humans were present too."

"Humans used to be the weakest creatures in all of the realms combined. They had no magical abilities. No circle in their heart or mana. They worshipped the dragons as gods, along with the angels in the upper realms, and were fearful of the devils in the lower realms. Because the devils used to devour them and burn their cities and villages. Since they were weak and helpless to defend themselves, the dragons used to protect them from the devils."

"But there were times when even us dragons were unable to protect the humans, since as a race gifted with immense mana and magical abilities, what we lacked was the ability to reproduce more of our kind. After ages, only one dragon would be born. Our numbers were very few."

"Then wouldn't the dragons have gotten wiped out after a few generations?" Ruby asked curiously.

"That's why the dragon God proposed a solution. It was to mate with humans. When all the dragons accepted. They took human form and took wives from the human race. The children that took birth, were born with human body along with dragon horns, eyes and all the abilities of a dragon. When they grew up, their children were born with dragon blood, then their children, and in this way it continued." Stormbreaker said and continued ahead.

"From this, two positive outcomes were seen. When the dragon children born from humans matured, they could take their dragon forms completely. In this way the reproduction problem was solved for the dragons. Also, the humans started gaining magical abilities with each generation, and were able to defend themselves now from the devils."

"Then what happened later senior? Why are there no dragons in the continent now?" Luke asked.

"There is a reason for that. When someone rises too high, there comes a time for his fall, and the more he rises the greater the fall is." Stormbreaker shook his head. He was overwhelmed with grief and sadness, the memories were still alive in his mind, as if it had happened just yesterday.

A deep sigh escaped him. he composed himself and started speaking again.

"A great genius was born in the dragon race once. He was such a prodigy that even the heavens got jealous of him. There were some circumstances and events involved, that can't be said, because of which a great war erupted between all the realms. And the battlefield was the middle realm, where you all are now."

"The war was so devastating that the middle realm was about to get destroyed. Being the guardians, the dragons were burdened with the responsibility of saving the realm. Our genius gave up his life along with almost all the dragons while pushing the other races to their realm and sealed the middle realm. So that no one can invade here again."

"The surviving dragons were weakened and moved themselves to other pocket realms. Leaving the humans in the middle realm. Slowly with time, the dragon blood in humans diluted, most of the time being dormant or awakening in the form of a different power. They started calling this power the spirit form."
