The girl glanced at him while they ran.

"What is your plan now?! Why keep aiming for its eyes?!"

Fenric gasped for breath as he dodged a falling roof beam.

"I'm trying to blind it! If it can't see us, it will just swing wildly instead of attacking us on purpose!"

She blinked in surprise. "That… actually makes sense!"

Fenric shrugged nervously. "I know! I hate that it makes sense!"

But then the Kraken gave another furious roar. The eye he had hit first was glowing an even deeper, angry red.

The girl's face fell. "Its eye is healing… The hit only made it angrier."

Fenric groaned. "So it doesn't bleed… it gets mad upgrades instead. Fantastic."

The girl gripped her spear. "We must keep attacking. It will recover in less than a minute if we stop."

Fenric looked at the timer again:

6:12 remaining.

He wanted to cry.

"Okay, okay… don't panic… just shoot the monster… the giant monster…" he whispered to himself.

The Kraken lifted its front half from the ocean, revealing rows of teeth and more writhing tentacles.

The girl shouted:

"We attack together this time! Aim for the middle eye!"

Fenric nodded, even though his knees were shaking.

He raised the bow again.

The golden light formed faster now — reacting to his fear… and his will.

The girl jumped into the air using wind magic, spinning her spear back.

Fenric whispered:

"Please… don't miss…"

He let go.

The arrow and spear flew together — one blazing gold, one swirling with wind.

SHHHWWW—THUNK!!

Both attacks hit the huge middle eye at the same time.

The Kraken shrieked, flailing like a storm given life.

"I… I leveled up again? I only shot twice!"

The girl landed beside him, amazed.

"You really are the one from the prophecy…"

Fenric waved his hands frantically.

"Stop saying that!! I am not prophecy material! I'm more like… accidental-death material!"

A massive shadow fell over them — the Kraken was preparing to crush them both.

Fenric and the girl looked up slowly.

"Oh no…" Fenric whispered.

5:44 remaining.

Just as the giant tentacle was about to crush them—

BOOOOM!!

A blast of sand and wind exploded upward. The Kraken's attack stopped mid-swing as something massive slammed into the limb, knocking it aside.

Fenric blinked.

"…What—just—saved us?"

A huge creature landed in front of them, kicking up sand.

It looked like a dog… if a dog were the size of a house.

Black fur. Muscles like boulders. Fangs longer than Fenric's arms. It growled at the Kraken, each breath sending shockwaves through the air.

Fenric's jaw dropped.

"That's a DOG?!"

The girl nodded proudly. "That's Spunky. The Chief's companion."

Fenric stared up, horrified.

"Spunky? That thing is a Spunky?!"

"He started small," she explained calmly. "We thought he was a normal dog until one day he knocked out a whole herd of Ironback Boars by accident."

Fenric just stared.

"'Accident'?!"

"Yes," she continued. "He has a small amount of Cerberus bloodline. Thankfully small… or he would have three heads instead of one."

Spunky roared and charged again.

CRASH!!

He bit into a tentacle, tearing it off. The Kraken howled in pain and stumbled back toward the ocean, suddenly much less confident.

Spunky barked once—

The bark alone made the Kraken flinch.

Fenric stood frozen.

"…I love that dog," he whispered.

The girl grabbed his arm again. "Don't relax yet! We still need to survive!"

Fenric checked the timer.

4:58 remaining.

He groaned loudly.

"Why does time move slower when you're almost dying?!"

The Kraken started gathering power again, ocean waves rising around it.

The girl readied her spear.

"Spunky can't finish it alone. We keep attacking!"

Fenric swallowed his fear and lifted his bow.

"Okay… okay. Third time's the charm… right?"

Another golden arrow formed—brighter than ever.

Fenric aimed carefully, hands still shaking but a little less scared now.

Spunky kept biting and slamming the Kraken, forcing it to stay focused on the giant dog instead of them.

The girl shouted, "Now's your chance! Take out the other eye!"

Fenric nodded and pulled the string back even more.

The golden arrow looked sharper than before… and hotter. It hummed with energy.

"Left eye… don't miss…" he whispered.

He released.

FWOOOOSH!!

The arrow flew fast—piercing straight into the Kraken's left eye!

SKREEEEEE!!

The monster shrieked again, thrashing wildly.

A notification flashed:

But the girl pointed with a worried expression.

"Look! The right eye is healing already!"

Fenric looked closer — she was right. The Kraken's right eye was glowing and reforming, covered in red light.

"Man, this Kraken has better healing than a video game boss!"

The girl nodded. "It recovers too fast. If we stop attacking for even a moment, its vision returns."

Spunky barked loudly as if agreeing, still holding off the monster.

Fenric took a deep breath.

"Alright… with Spunky tanking, I can shoot more. I'll just keep hitting the eyes until it gives up or I pass out!"

He pulled the bowstring again.

And again, a golden arrow formed—this one even brighter than before.

Fenric grinned nervously.

"Okay Kraken… round four."

Timer: 4:01 remaining.

Fenric aimed again, this time at the Kraken's right eye that was half-healed.

"Stay still… stay still…" he whispered, even though the Kraken was thrashing like a broken washing machine.

He let go.

FWIP—THUNK!

The arrow hit the right eye again, stopping its healing.

The Kraken roared and swung its tentacles in confusion, now barely able to see anything straight.

Fenric smiled a little.

"I think it's working! If it can't see, it can't aim!"

The girl nodded. "Good! Just keep shooting! Don't let it fully recover!"

Fenric looked at the timer: 3:42 remaining.

Still way too long.

Another tentacle came crashing down toward them, but Spunky smashed into it with his huge body, sending it flying.

Fenric blinked. "How is that dog not tired?!"

"He eats a lot," the girl replied like it was the most normal thing in the world.

Fenric pulled the bow again. The golden arrow formed instantly now — like the bow trusted him.

He fired again.

Another hit. More screams. More EXP.

Fenric groaned loudly.
