Kevin: "Did you take care of it this time? How many casualties?"
Jimmy: "Four dead, seven wounded. But there's one who might not make it; the bullet's close to his heart. The others aren't too severely hurt. However, there were two kids..."
Kevin: "I understand. When are you planning to hold a press briefing? The FBI's previous briefing barely disclosed anything. This time, with two suspects killed at the scene, you should be able to have a full briefing, right?"
Jimmy: "I'm still on site. I'll discuss with the others once I get back. If this shooting isn't connected to the previous ones, we can hold an independent briefing. No problem; you can pass this case directly to the FBI."
Kevin: "Got it."
After hanging up, Jimmy thought for a moment and called Nia. She's probably aware of the case already, but calling her might ease her mind and keep her from worrying too much.
The forensic team was examining the scene, and backup agents were in position. Jimmy called Mark and Julia to return to the Manhattan office.
Their task is quite heavy this time; they need to confirm the identities of all the dead and wounded at the scene, as well as identify the other shooter.
As for Jimmy, his work is the most troublesome. He has to discuss thoroughly with others about how to conduct the briefing, as there's a lot of pressure on those who will conduct it.
Ruiz was already waiting for Jimmy at the office. Upon reaching his office, Jimmy took him upstairs. The case is significant, and the leaders upstairs have been informed and are already in the Public Affairs Office meeting room.
Dave Hudson, the Manhattan office supervisor, John Thompson, the Agent Supervisor, Mrs. Mason from the Public Affairs Office, her assistant Isabel, OPR Head David Martin, Assistant Agent Supervisor Ruiz, and Jimmy — the meeting room was indeed full of key personnel.
Dave: "Jimmy, you're in charge of this shooting case, right? Brief us on the current situation."
Jimmy: "OK, everyone, this shooting incident occurred at the children's park near Queens Zoo. Current casualties are four dead and seven wounded. The hospital hasn't provided updates yet. There were two shooters; one was Will Scott, a suspect in two previous shootings we've been investigating. The identity of the other is still unknown; Mark and Julia are already working on it.
From current information, we can confirm this shooting is linked to the Brooklyn Felix Park shooting and the Dike Beach Park amusement park shooting.
Firstly, regarding the Felix Park shooting, we deduced the shooter's position was the parking lot based on the scene. Using park surveillance and nearby cameras, we identified a car with fake plates. When we located the car, we found a suspect, Daniel Brown.
He briefly exchanged gunfire with Mark, and we discovered several firearms at his home, one of which was confirmed through ballistic tests as the weapon used in the park shooting. However, the lab also identified an issue — ballistic marks on two bullets didn't match, leading us to suspect there was a second shooter.
While tracking Daniel, we obtained his phone from his family. Through phone location data, we confirmed he was at Dike Beach Park. I, along with Mark and Julia, followed. We found Daniel Brown at the amusement park, and as they fired on tourists, we shot and killed Daniel Brown and the second shooter, Joseph Carter.
Since both Joseph and Daniel were veterans, we worried they might have accomplices. So, we investigated their relationships through VA and other channels, eventually identifying Will Scott as a connection to Joseph.
Today's results from the investigation into Will showed we acquired his phone number. Location data placed him at the park. Due to the previous two events, we suspected they might attack again, so we rushed to his position. Coincidentally, the shooting occurred. Directed by witnesses, I found Will and the second shooter leaving the scene and engaged them in a firefight.
Since they both used rifles, I couldn't afford to hold back while handling the situation, killing them on the spot.
Currently, the lab is urgently working on ballistic matches to determine if they were the only two involved in today's shooting and also if either was the second shooter in the original Felix Park incident.
That's the situation."
OPR Head David Martin was first to speak: "Jimmy, were you the one who shot the suspects in both incidents?"
Jimmy nodded: "Yes, during the Dike Beach Park shooting, our Homicide Team was present. I was inside the amusement park, and Mark and Julia were outside locking down exits, so they arrived slightly later.
In today's Queens shooting, I was the first to arrive on the scene. Under the pressure of two rifles, I couldn't wait for reinforcements, as it could have caused more severe harm, potentially endangering others."
David Martin: "Did you use your issued firearm?"
Jimmy: "Yes, a Glock and my backup revolver." He unbuttoned his shirt, revealing the underarm holster to David Martin, "The backup revolver is officially registered with the department."
David Martin nodded to Dave, indicating he had no more questions.
Dave looked at John Thompson, whose question wasn't for Jimmy but Ruiz: "Ruiz, why wasn't the shooting handed over to the Anti-Terrorism Team?"
Ruiz: "The Felix Park shooting was initially investigated by the NYPD but transferred to us. At the time, with three casualties, it wasn't clear whether it was a terror attack, so it was given to the Homicide Team for handling.
The subsequent Dike Beach Park shooting and today's Queens shooting were connected cases. Time was tight, and Jimmy had been managing the prior investigations, so it wasn't transferred later."
John: "What about now?"
Ruiz: "I think we need the results of today's investigation to determine the second shooter's identity and see if they're related to the first park shooting. If all shooters are confirmed dead, the case can close; otherwise, we can pass it to the Anti-Terrorism Team for further profiling and investigation."
John looked at Jimmy: "Jimmy, what's your opinion?"
Jimmy: "I agree with Ruiz. If there are further developments in this case, we can transfer it."
John turned to Dave: "Dave, what do you think?"
Dave nodded, "Mrs. Mason, when can you prepare the statement for the briefing? When can we hold the briefing?"
Mrs. Mason: "We should clarify all evidence as soon as possible. With three consecutive large-scale shootings causing widespread fear, we need a comprehensive incident briefing."
Dave: "OK, let's do that. Ruiz, assign personnel to support Jimmy in thoroughly investigating all leads by today. Mrs. Mason, arrange for an incident update briefing tomorrow afternoon."
Mrs. Mason nodded and then looked at Jimmy: "Jimmy, will you be the spokesperson for the briefing? You're the case lead."
Jimmy was surprised to see Mrs. Mason look at him, then turned to Dave, "Me?"
Dave: "Yes, prepare for it. Meeting adjourned. John and Ruiz, join me in my office."
Dave finalized it directly. Mrs. Mason nodded at Jimmy, got up, and left the meeting room, leaving Jimmy alone soon after.
Previously, Jimmy hadn't had the chance to be the spokesperson in the Public Affairs Office. Just as he was about to leave, he got to experience it — a sort of farewell benefit, but why this time?
Sitting in the meeting room, he pondered for a while, unable to figure out who arranged this behind the scenes. With no choice, he gave up, deciding to use the remaining time to think about what to say. It was indeed complicated.
Leaving the meeting room, Jimmy greeted Mrs. Mason, considering he'd worked under her for months and couldn't just leave without a word, then returned to his office.
