Los Angeles Legendary Sleuth

Chapter 452: Trap (Part 2)

"Thank you again for the breakfast."

Walker asked, "What's wrong with your car? Is there anything we can do to help?"

"Could you spare some gasoline? My car is out of fuel."

"Sorry, we would like to help you, but we have a diesel car."

"That's unfortunate." Amas Martin seemed a bit disappointed, "I'll have to figure out another way. Still, thank you."

Walker asked, "Did you not refuel before entering the canyon?"

"I did, and I filled the tank.

Yesterday afternoon, I parked the car on the south side of the canyon and went inside to explore. When I returned, I found the fuel tank cap open and the gasoline inside was gone. Some jerk actually stole my fuel."

Walker asked, "Did anything else in your car get stolen?"

"No, nothing else was taken."

Walker said, "It's the first time I've heard of thieves not stealing stuff from inside the car, just the gasoline."

"Exactly, I'm puzzled too. I wonder if I encountered some weirdo." Amas Martin stuffed the remaining bread into his mouth, looking satisfied.

"Do you have any plans now?"

"I need to find a way to get gasoline, can't just push the car back." Amas Martin turned to Luke and his companion, "When are you two planning to head back? Could you give me a lift?"

"We just arrived at the canyon and plan to stay for a few days, not planning to leave anytime soon." Walker looked at Luke and said, "Don't you have the contact information for the canyon administrator? Maybe he can help."

"Let me find it." Luke returned to the RV and came out again holding a business card,

"This is someone we met in the rest area who claimed to be the canyon administrator, named Carlos. If you need help, you can try to reach him."

"Thank you, this is exactly what I need." Amas Martin showed a grateful expression and took out his phone to dial the number on the card, but couldn't get through.

Amas Martin tried calling again using the walkie-talkie, but still got no response.

Walker looked at the walkie-talkie in his hand, "That little thing isn't working, better use our big one."

Walker took Amas Martin into the RV, turned on the walkie-talkie, adjusted the channel, and called using the RV's walkie-talkie, "Hello, can you hear me?"

"Yes, I am the canyon administrator Carlos, what's the matter?" came a man's voice from the other end.

"Hi, Administrator Carlos, my name is Amas Martin, I'm here touring Red Rock Canyon. My car is out of fuel and I can't leave Red Rock Canyon, could you assist me?"

"The car can't start?"

"Yes."

"Is there anything else wrong?"

"No, it's just out of gasoline."

"Where are you now?"

"I don't know where this place is either; my walkie-talkie has a short communication range. I'm using someone else's walkie-talkie to communicate."

"I need to know your location to help you. There are quite a few signs in the canyon; you could look around."

Amas Martin thought for a moment, gazing at the surroundings, "I'm on the south bank of the canyon.

Oh, I remember, there's a sign about a few hundred meters from my car that reads D287."

The walkie-talkie repeated, "D287?"

"Yes."

"Alright, I understand your approximate location. I can deliver gasoline to you."

"Thank you so much."

"No need to thank me, this service has a fee."

"How much?"

"Five gallons, five hundred US Dollars."

"My God, that's too expensive! It's practically extortion!" Amas Martin complained.

"I'm the canyon administrator, not a babysitter. If you find it expensive, you don't have to use the service."

Amas Martin gritted his teeth and took a deep breath, "Can you make it cheaper?"

"I have work this morning, if you can wait, I can deliver this afternoon and only charge you 400 US Dollars."

"Are you sure you can come in the afternoon?"

"Not sure, I have to complete my work arrangements first."

Amas Martin was completely out of options, "Alright, five hundred US Dollars it is. When can you come over?"

"Within an hour." With that, the other side of the walkie-talkie hung up.

Amas Martin said helplessly, "This guy is practically a vampire."

Luke said, "I don't know him either, just met him by chance at the rest area."

"It's not your concern, thank you anyway." Amas Martin stood up, "I need to go and wait for that vampire to deliver the gasoline."

Luke kindly reminded, "Buddy, be careful while traveling alone out here."

"I will. I forgot to ask, what are you guys doing here?"

Luke replied perfunctorily, "We're here for sightseeing too."

"Enjoy your trip." Amas Martin got out of the RV and walked towards the distance.

Beside him, Walker asked, "Luke, what do you think?"

Luke shook his head; he had no clue either.

Ever since they arrived at the canyon, strange things kept happening.

First, they met the canyon administrator Carlos, who advised them not to enter the canyon due to missing tourists.

At night, their RV was attacked by wolves, followed by the sound of gunshots.

Luke and his companion took turns to stay on watch but found nothing unusual, yet early in the morning a peeping young black man showed up saying his car's fuel was stolen.

Everything seems tinged with oddity.
