Void Cultivation

Chapter 72- Mystery

After a breakfast of toasted bread and hot coffee- which he didn't know still existed, Grey bought a bottle of wine as he made his way to the detective agency. He recalled a saying about the sweetness of wine and thought he should try it out. As he got to the building, he pulled out his badge and hung it on the right side of his chest.

As he opened to door, he saw many members of the detective agency department hustling and bustling about. His eyes took a glance at the updated wanted list then retracted after a few moments.

Most of the detective agency members who saw his performance the other day all greeted him either by nodding or giving him a glance. Grey did not recognize anyone in particular so he continued on with indifference and entered his office to see if any new documents came for him.

But what he saw instead was the Captain sitting on his chair with a comfortable expression on her face. She had a lollipop in her mouth and was reading a document file in both hands.

When she saw the door open, she lazily brought her gaze up and winked at Grey. "I thought you weren't coming today as well, if not I would have come and visited you in a bit." She made no attempts to stand up from that position.

Grey had an indifferent expression on his face but his lips twitched a little when he heard her words.

"What happened?" He asked and sat down in the other seat. The Captain passed the document in her hand to him and he read it with an indifferent expression on his face.

"You didn't think our department only investigated wanted criminals and information about the Secret Order did you?" She sat down straight to see Grey shaking his head.

"Any matter that Sky Mist thinks is worth investigating is passed on to us. We only deal with homicide because it's within our power!" She continued. "Read the file till the end."

Grey did as he was told and read till the end. A frown appeared on his face when he closed the document. "Murder cases?" Grey tilted his head.

"Precisely!" The captain said.

"What's so special about these murder cases? Don't people die all the time?" Grey asked. This case seemed very dumb to him.

"That's where you have to learn little Grey, you only look on the surface." Captain said as she took out another lollipop.

'Did she just call me little Grey?'

"All these murder cases have something connected. As the Vice captain, I want you to get to the bottom of this!" Captain said enthusiastically.

'I only just entered Sky Mist city a few days ago yet now I'm in charge of murder cases?' But Grey didn't voice out his thoughts, instead he nodded at the Captain and made to get up.

After passing him some crucial information which she thought he would need, Grey walked out of the building. His detective hat on his head hiding his beautiful and eye catching hair color. His expression was one of indifference as he made his way to the area where the Captain spoke about.

On his way, he took off his badge which identified him as a member of the detective agency and looked at his Jade slip. On it was the information about the victims. Grey scrolled through them one by one with only a frown on his face.

All the victims were girls who had been wandering around late at night. They were killed mysteriously at night and each had several if their organs missing. This had been happening for a few days in the slums until they finally reported this case to the Detective agency department. The security department tried to get to the bottom of the matter but they ended up with nothing. It was later that the Detective agency was involved.

"Let's start with the location were they found their corpses." Grey muttered to himself. To him, this murder case smelled like the work of a cultivator who used innocent citizens for his weird cultivation methods. The murderer was just trying to avoid punishment, that's all.

Here in Sky Mist, everyone was faced with an unspoken and heavy rule that constantly pushed them to their best and to strive harder. This unspoken rule was Survival of the fittest.

Everyone who entered Sky Mist was faced with the endless possibilities and nearly limitless potential. That made everyone who come here never want to leave as the environment was always thriving and growing.

Mundane people were allowed to owned shops or provide certain services. Of course this was if one had enough funds. With spirit stones, a lot could be accomplished in Sky Mist city. You could even price the life of your neighbour if you had enough money.

But due to the greedy Human nature, some rules and regulations were put in place with certain people to enforce them. Certain departments were opened to keep the city running.

The Detective agency department, who job was to investigate homicide cases. They were one of the main forces of Sky Mist city to strike back against over excessive killings. They handled wanted criminals and extreme cases that involves high level cultivators. The Information department, which provided and broadcasted Intel and information. The Transportation department, and the Resource department.

In the entire Sky Mist city, there were seven sequences and each sequence had those four departments.

Sequence three, which was Grey's current sequence, held control over the port which was Sky Mist main mode of transport. Ever since God descended, the once boundless sea was corrupted. All life in the sea underwent a change similar to mutation. The waters turned as black as ink, the creatures living in it were all brutal and the boundless sea became the dead sea.

But in the end, humans learned how to navigate those waters. In truth, the second continent was surrounded by water. The largest continent, which was the third continent broke off into many islands. Some islands drifted far away while some drifted close to the second continent.

Human race's genuises each took the rest of the second continent forces and fled to one of the many islands floating in the dead sea.

After God descended, nonhuman and humans were forced to coexist on a very fragile power balance. But every once in a while, war would erupt.

The nonhuman races still detested humans up till now and the humans remained uncaring. Even in the face of total extinction, they still managed to survive. Although cultivation got harder, the cultivators it produced were tougher as a result.

On the surface, the inhuman races lived with the human race for a while. But a few people who were very deep into politics could smell war coming soon.

***

A few hours later, Grey was standing in the slums of Sky Mist city. Seeing the slums brought back memories which weren't his. There was the everlasting putrid smell of blood and decay. Filthy vagabond roamed the streets in constant fear and hunger.

The former Grey was once a vagabond like them before he obtained the Sky Mist cultivation art from killing a drug peddler. But soon after, God's blinding radiance shone upon the city he was in and everyone died except for him. He managed to survive in the corroded zone for two whole months until he was killed and Grey transmigrated into his body.

These memories flooded his mind as he hid himself in a corner as he watched the outskirt rats make a living for themselves. But strangely enough, he did not see recall any memories of his sister and brother. Grey suspected that they had gone missing before that time or he had not fully digested all of the former Grey's memories.

With his detective hat which blocked most of his face, no one noticed him in that auspicious corner. He even released a bit of his aura to stop anyone who would subconsciously try to get close.

Grey reached the spot where the murder was said to happen but he didn't see anything out of the ordinary happen. He only sensed a strong aura of death and a hint if spirit energy.

'This means that the murderer was a cultivator!' But peering deeper, Grey felt that there was more. Observing the aura of death, he felt it was a bit familiar. He tried to recall where he felt it so familiar until he remembered a race called the Devil race, they used the aura of death to cultivate.

'But if it was an inhuman race, why does it need to kill humans for it's cultivation art?' Grey felt that things didn't add up, so he decided to visit the other locations.

There was still that strange aura of death. Feeling confused, Grey decided to head back to the Information Department! They had records of all races that lived in Sky Mist city. If the devil race was recorded here, they would definitely be an explanation on the type of cultivation art they practiced.
