Progenitor's Burden

Chapter 2.40: Infected Matriarch

Under the canopy of Wolf's Run, Rose and her team ventured forth, determined to investigate the dark forest that separated them from the McFarland Mines. Their destination was marred by the looming threat of the infected spiders. The group comprised Rose, Ed, Alice, and Victoria.

Ed confidently took the lead in the formation, his unique human form imbued with a variety of keen senses from his animal form that rendered him an unparalleled scout. Upon acquiring his class, Ed's human form evolved to integrate characteristics from the diverse animals he could transform into. For instance, the keen vision he adopted was reminiscent of the Red Tail Hawk form. However, this specific transformation remained underutilized due to his unease with heights. His senses were further heightened with the acute smell from his bear transformation and the sharp hearing from his horse form.

He had yet to do anything other than morph into his animal forms, which were unlocked with his class. He hadn't told anyone about the bird form yet since he was embarrassed. He still couldn't fly, and it made him want to vomit. He hadn't had to use the horse form, as it really hadn't come up. So, everyone just assumed he had the bear form only.

At the back, Alicia stood vigilant, her position safeguarded by her remarkable reflexes, which allowed her to react almost instantaneously to emerging threats. An ace up her sleeve was her unique ability, 'Presence Awareness,' which equipped her with the uncanny knack to detect concealed entities, ensuring that nothing ever ambushed the group from behind.

Ensconced at the heart of the formation were Victoria and Rose, whose presence bolstered the group's core defenses. As they journeyed deeper into the enigmatic woods, the duo's complementary strengths became evident. Both women were well-versed in the arcane arts, yet their magic was distinct in nature. Rose's prowess demanded a specific time investment to weave her potent spells, while Victoria was more of a hybrid magic and fighter.

General Valthorn's forces would soon launch a diversionary attack in a distant part of the forest, creating a distraction to provide Rose and her team with some much-needed breathing room.

The group hadn't traveled far before encountering their first cluster of spiders. The swarm was noticeably less dense than their previous encounter with Sinclair in this vicinity. As the spiders scuttled horizontally, they unexpectedly ambushed the team just as they turned the corner, almost catching them off guard if not for Alicia.

The whisper of Rose's incantation was all the cue Ed needed. In the split second that followed, he transformed, his figure expanding and reshaping into a bear's ferocious, powerful form. He lunged forward with a roar, his immense strength focused on the first wave of spiders. Their legs scrambled and mandibles clicked in defiance, but Ed's bear form was unstoppable, charging and swiping with devastating force, sending the creatures reeling.

From the overhead canopy, more spiders descended, their silk lines reflecting the dim light as they tried to swarm him. Victoria's concentration never wavered. Raising her staff, she invoked a series of healing spells. A warm, golden aura enveloped Ed, mending his wounds almost instantly..

Rose, with her arms outstretched, summoned the forces above. Clouds swiftly converged, and the battleground below darkened. With a sharp incantation, the air was filled with an icy chill. Razor-sharp shards of ice began to plummet from the sky. The spiders, ill-prepared for such an assault, tried to dodge the freezing barrage, but many were impaled or slowed, their movements becoming sluggish as ice encapsulated them.

Meanwhile, Alice, with her armored gauntlets and boots, engaged in close combat with the spiders on the outskirts. Each punch delivered with her gauntlet was forceful enough to crush exoskeletons, and every kick sent spiders flying. She became an impenetrable barrier, ensuring that none approached Rose and Victoria. Her gauntlets and boots gleamed with each impactful hit, serving as her weapons and shield against the spider onslaught.

The final spider met its fate with a decisive stomp, marking the end of the brief but intense battle. The surroundings were once again silent, save for the group's collective heavy breathing. They took a moment to recoup in a tight circle, allowing the residual healing magic to mend their wounds.

Victoria, her face a mask of concern, turned to Ed. "That bear form is imposing, Ed. But, witnessing those cuts... how agonizing is it?"

Ed offered a slight shrug in response. "Oh, I feel every slash and bite. Sometimes it's searing pain. But it's part of the role I've taken on. I'm the shield, the bulwark designed to bear the brunt of the damage." He chuckled at his use of bear in the description, earning himself a quick smirk from Alice. "And you," he said, turning to Rose, "another new spell?"

Grinning and looking at her fingernails like she didn't know what he was talking about. "Who me? I would never keep trying new ways to create magical spells." She rolled her eyes at him before reading out the new skill.

Skill: Skadi's Tempest (Rare)

Description: Channel the fury of Skadi, the Norse goddess of winter and vengeance, to conjure a tempest of razor-edged ice and howling wind. Born from the high peaks and eternal snows of the Jotun realms, this storm crashes down upon a wide area, lacerating foes with frozen shards and hindering their movement. Enemies caught within the blizzard suffer continuous frost damage and find their speed and reactions dulled by the relentless chill. Skadi's wrath leaves none untouched.

Effects:

Frost Shards

: Deals continuous ice damage to all enemies within a 20-foot radius for 10 seconds.

Chilling Winds

: Reduces the movement speed of affected enemies by 30% for the storm duration.

Icy Terrain

: Creates a slippery ground effect within the area, causing a 20% chance for enemies to lose balance when moving or attacking.

Cooldown: 5 minutes

"Let's not waste any more time," Alice declared, her eyes scanning the surroundings. "It appears those spiders were moving towards the direction from which General Valthorn and his troops launched their assault."

Traversing deeper into the forest, the overhanging canopy enveloped the group, its thick foliage blotting out the sky and casting a perpetual gloom below. The path they treaded was a serpentine trail, with gnarled roots protruding and ancient trees leaning over as if whispering secrets of the ages. The soft rustle of fallen leaves accompanied every step, as did the occasional hoot of an owl and the distant murmurs of forest life.

Now and then, their journey was interrupted by clusters of spiders. These encounters became increasingly frequent, an ominous sign of what lay ahead. Each skirmish was a synchronized dance of spells and might as they methodically dealt with each threat. But these were mere distractions from their primary objective.

What truly guided them was not the visible path, but the silken threads that draped the forest like a haunting tapestry. These webs were sometimes delicate and barely noticeable, glistening with morning dew. But as they delved further, the webs grew denser, forming intricate patterns spanned from tree to tree, ground to canopy. These patterns told a story about an ecosystem dominated and reshaped by the arachnid residents.

The group's logic was straightforward: follow the webs, which were the breadcrumbs in this ominous maze. They believed that the more complex the patterns, the closer they were to the heart of the infestation. Their intuition and limited experience in tracking wild creatures led them to this strategy. Deep within this silken fortress, they felt the presence of the Queen, the mastermind of this arachnid dominion. Taking her down would be pivotal in restoring balance to the forest and ending the creeping threat that had taken hold.

As the group continued their journey, they encountered more of the smaller spiders, leading to skirmishes. With her armored gauntlets and boots, Alice dealt swift punches and kicks to keep them at bay. Ed, in his formidable bear form, charged through their ranks, scattering them and using his strength to crush any that got too close. Rose's incantations resulted in gusts of icy winds and arcs of electricity that kept the arachnids from getting too close. Each confrontation, while intense, was also methodical, with the group maintaining formation and relying on Victoria's healing magic to sustain them.

They came across three gargantuan spider guardians emerging from a particularly thick part of the forest. Their size was staggering, each easily five times larger than they had ever encountered. The intricate glowing patterns on their abdomens hinted at more than just brute strength – these creatures had abilities the group hadn't yet faced.

In a hushed tone, Ed noted, "Look at the one on the left—its whole body is pulsing with energy. It must have some kind of power. And that one on the right, see how it's stringing those webs together? Its spinnerets are probably capable of weaving some powerful threads."

Alice whispered in agreement, "We should strike them from a distance first, weaken them as much as we can."

Rose, nodding, said, "I can lead with an ice barrage. It might slow them down a bit, buying us more time to retreat if we need it."

Victoria added, "Once we engage, we should return to that clearing behind us. Without the overhead canopy, they can't drop down on us, and I can focus on healing and support without constantly watching for aerial threats."

Their plan set, the group prepared for what was likely to be one of their most challenging battles yet. With a shared nod, they took their positions, ready to unleash their assault on the spider behemoths.

Rose initiated the battle, summoning the force of her Infernal Gale spell. The wind slowly picked up as the power built before igniting and spinning forward in two cyclones. Reacting immediately to the onslaught, the three gargantuan spiders locked onto the source of the magic, their many eyes glaring ominously at Rose.

The team tactically retreated, stepping backward in unison into the clearing, ensuring they maintained a formation that kept Rose protected. While the terrain opened up around them, it provided a better vantage point to strategize and maneuver.

Rose remained composed despite the pressing danger, continually launching spell after spell. Her relentless assault, especially on the lead spider, was beginning to show results. The creature's carapace bore scars and cracks, and frostbite discolored its once radiant streaks. The power of the chilling onslaught had certainly left its mark.

The atmosphere grew tense as the group braced themselves for the impending confrontation. The once-green and black forest was momentarily blanketed in a shimmering white, as the cold began to take its toll on the spider guardians. Their movements, usually swift and agile, started to slow, the ice from the Ice Orb biting into their carapaces.

Ed's massive bear form stood as a bulwark between the spiders and the group. His sharp and calculating eyes assessed every move the spiders made. He took a deep breath and unleashed a deafening roar. It reverberated across the clearing, drawing the spiders' undivided attention towards him. The roar was more than just a challenge; it was a declaration, a clear message that they would have to get through him first.

As the spiders' many eyes fixated on Ed, the rest of the team adjusted their positions, each ready to play their part in the battle strategy they had formed. The clearing, now their chosen battleground, echoed with the sounds of spells being cast, roars, and the skittering of spider legs.

In his bear form, Ed possessed an ability reminiscent of Sinclair's – an innate capability to draw and command the attention of adversaries. Activating, he immediately felt the unsettling sensation of numerous eyes fixing on him with malicious intent.

Skill: Jotun-Blooded Roar (Rare)

Description: While assuming the might of the bear, release a thunderous roar infused with the legacy of the earthborn giants—the Jötnar. The cry shakes the ground and echoes through stone and bone, compelling all enemies within range to turn their wrath upon the user. The roar conjures a fleeting aura of ancient dominance, forming a circle of dread where weaker wills falter and all eyes are drawn to the one who bears the mantle of the wild.

Effects:

Forced Aggression:

Enemies within a 25-foot radius are taunted, compelling them to attack the user for 10 seconds.

Earthen Resolve:

Grants the user 20% increased damage resistance while the taunt is active.

Shaking Ground:

The roar destabilizes the area, reducing the movement speed of affected enemies by 15% for 5 seconds.

Cooldown: 2 minutes

Yet, as the spiders lunged forward, sealing the distance between them and their target, an unexpected burst of fire erupted from behind Ed. The scorching flames temporarily halted and disoriented the monstrous spiders, buying Ed a precious split-second to respond.

Seizing this momentary advantage, Ed, with all his might, swiped at the already weakened spider Rose had been targeting. The force of his blow was palpable, resonating with a satisfying crunch, further crippling the already beleaguered creature.

With agility and precision, Alice darted forward, her movements a blur. Zeroing in on the weakened spider, she delivered a swift and decisive strike, landing the final blow that felled the monstrous creature. The ground trembled slightly as the behemoth collapsed, defeated by the combined efforts of the team and Alice's finishing touch.

In the heat of battle, the team's intense focus on the first spider had left them somewhat vulnerable. The lapse in attention proved costly as one of the remaining spiders saw an opportunity and lunged at Ed's exposed flank. The sheer horror of the scene unfolded as the spider's foot-long fangs penetrated deep into Ed's hip. The pulsating, sinewy muscles on the sides of the spider's face contracted, pumping its noxious venom into Ed's system.

Reacting with a primal roar of pain and fury, Ed mustered his strength and batted the creature away. However, the damage was done; one of the spider's mandibles had snapped off and remained lodged in his flesh. Feeling the venom's effects, Ed's vision blurred, and he swayed, struggling to maintain his balance.

Sensing the immediate threat her comrade faced, Rose quickly pivoted towards the offending spider, now trying to regain its stance. She invoked her Ice Orb and Infernal Gale back to back with a focused chant and a determined gleam. The atmosphere around the spider began to shift as the chilling cold and searing heat combined, prepared to engulf it.

The spectacle of Rose's magic merging was mesmerizing. As the spell brewed briefly, the energy around her palpably charged, the contrasting elemental forces intermingling and manifesting in a dazzling display of power.

The spider targeted by her onslaught was soon engulfed in a dance of frosty blue and burning orange flames. The initial icy blast locked its limbs, slowing its movements, followed by an infernal heat that seemed to burn it from the inside. The combination of elements not only physically injured the spider but also drained its vitality and speed, leaving it weakened and vulnerable.

Rose poured even more mana into the Infernal Gale, intensifying the effect. The spider thrashed and hissed, caught in the relentless clash of elements. At the same time, Victoria worked to counteract the venom coursing through Ed's system with her healing spells.

Suddenly, a familiar voice echoed across the battlefield. Alice was sprinting, another enormous spider hot on her heels, its many eyes locked onto her. "SWITCH!" she bellowed, her strategy clear to Rose.

Rose redirected her focus without hesitation, launching her spell onto the spider pursuing Alice. The intense surge of elemental magic pinned this new adversary in place, encasing it within the confines of wind and fire. However, the diversion of her attention meant that the first spider, albeit gravely weakened and smoldering from the prior onslaught, was momentarily free of her control. Its movements were sluggish and labored, but it was no longer immobilized.

With the most significant leap Rose had ever seen someone do, Alice flew into the air. With unparalleled grace, Alice harnessed her momentum. As she ascended, she was enveloped by a radiant white-gold aura, becoming one with the cosmos. Reaching her peak, she shimmered brilliantly, resembling a dazzling star. As she descended, she accelerated, a luminous meteor racing earthward. The culmination was awe-inspiring: her impact on the spider was so profound it shattered its form, an explosion of force and ethereal light.

Their intense battle with the monstrous spider ended in a collective sigh of relief. Alice, smeared with ichor and bits of spider entrails, clambered out of the remnants of the spider's carapace, muttering colorful curses as she extricated clumps of spider residue from her hair.

Victoria's urgent cry pulled their attention from the aftermath of the battle. "Help me, please!" she implored, her usually calm demeanor cracking with anxiety.

Rushing to her side, they quickly grasped the gravity of the situation. Ed lay in distress, with Victoria's healing efforts barely keeping up with the venom's deleterious effects. "You need to extract the fang," Victoria stressed. "It's still pumping venom into him."

Upon close inspection, they spotted the broken tip of the spider's fang protruding from Ed's wound. Acting on instinct, Rose was the first to try and remove it, but her fingers lacked the strength to dislodge the deeply embedded fang. Realizing the need for more force, Alice took over. Positioning herself, she grasped the fragment of the fang firmly and pulled with sheer determination. Ed, even in his weakened state, let out a muffled groan, the pain evident despite his semi-conscious state.

Victoria knelt over Ed, her focus locked on the spreading venom, unaware of the changes happening to her. As her desperation deepened, massive wings unfurled from her back, their shimmering feathers glowing faintly in the dim light. The sudden manifestation went unnoticed by Victoria, but Rose and Alice froze, their eyes wide with shock.

"She has wings," Alice whispered, the words barely audible as she watched Victoria, who seemed oblivious to the transformation.

The seconds dragged on, the venom continuing its relentless assault. Alice gritted her teeth as she worked, her hands slick with Ed's blood, trying to stem the flow of the toxin. Each tug on the fang seemed to worsen the seepage, the dark venom mingling with Ed's crimson lifeblood. Victoria's healing spells glowed faintly, battling against the poison, but the fight was taking its toll.

Finally, with a sickening squelch, Alice pulled the fang free. Ed let out a low, pained moan as blood and venom oozed from the wound. The group's attention turned to Victoria, her glowing hands hovering over Ed's chest.

"I'm giving it all I've got," Victoria said, her voice trembling. Tears welled in her eyes as she pushed more mana into her healing spells. The venom's persistence was unlike anything she had faced before, and doubts began to creep into her mind.

Sensing the healer's mounting panic, Rose stepped closer and spoke firmly. "Victoria, focus. Remember what Sinclair taught us—balance your skills and mana. You can scan him, isolate the venom, and see how it's moving through him. You can understand its flow and essence. Use that to guide your energy and drive it out."

Victoria blinked, Rose's words cutting through the fog of panic. She nodded, her wings shifting slightly as she steadied herself and drew on everything she had been taught. The team watched in tense silence, their hope pinned on her overcoming the venom's relentless grip.

Rose's words resonated in Victoria's mind, grounding her. Focus. Balance. Use what you know, she thought, steadying herself against the rising panic. Drawing on her class's innate vision, she shifted her focus, her sight peeling back layers of reality to reveal Ed's essence. His life force glowed faintly, but within it, the venom's dark tendrils snaked through his bloodstream, moving inexorably toward his brain.

The venom stood out starkly, its malicious flow a sharp contrast to Ed's natural energy. Victoria concentrated her mana, attempting to form a barrier to halt the toxin's spread. The glowing force momentarily slowed the venom's advance, but it quickly surged forward again, slipping through her defenses like water through a sieve.

She changed tactics, crafting reinforced barriers using her healing magic, each wall a glowing bulwark designed to slow the toxin. For brief moments, the venom stalled, its movement arrested by the constructs. But the reprieve was always short-lived. The venom breached each barrier in turn, pushing relentlessly forward.

Victoria's frustration mounted as every strategy faltered. She needed another approach—something new, something different. If I can't stop it, I can redirect it, she realized, her thoughts racing. Instead of blocking the venom, she concentrated her mana to guide its flow, forcing it into a single, controlled path.

Her wings shifted slightly as she worked, glowing faintly with her efforts. Taking a deep breath, Victoria retrieved a small dagger from her storage. Her hands trembled slightly, but her movements remained steady. She pressed the blade to Ed's neck and made a precise incision, targeting a minor artery while maintaining control over the blood flow.

The venom shifted, drawn by her mana's direction. It pooled near the incision, its dark tendrils retracting from Ed's system. Victoria's focus remained unbroken, her mana acting as both a guide and a force to expel the toxin. Slowly but steadily, the venom began to flow out, leaving Ed's bloodstream clearer with each passing second.

With the venom now funneled, Victoria used her mana to block alternative routes, forcing the toxin to seep through the incision. Dark tendrils of venom dripped onto the ground, leaving the earth stained with its sinister presence.

Victoria remained focused, her hands glowing with healing energy as she worked to stabilize Ed. The venom slowly drained away, and she channeled her mana to mitigate blood loss, ensuring he remained stable. Minute by minute, she purged the toxin entirely, her determination unwavering until Ed was clear.

As the last of the venom left Ed's body, Rose, standing nearby, finally broke the silence. "Victoria… uh, you know you have wings, right?"

Victoria blinked, her concentration faltering as she glanced over her shoulder. The sight of the massive, shimmering wings extending from her back left her stunned. "What—how?" she stammered, twisting slightly to get a better look.

Alice, wiping sweat from her brow, gave a lopsided grin. "It makes sense. You're a Valkyrie class. Wings fit the whole 'divine warrior' thing. Guess you just didn't know about this perk yet."

Victoria flexed her wings experimentally, the feathers shifting with her movements. "I… didn't feel them until now. This is… a lot."

Rose, ever practical, chimed in. "We'll figure it out later. But you should practice with them soon. If you can learn to use them effectively, they'll be a huge advantage in combat and situations like this."

Victoria nodded, though her shock was still evident. "I'll need to," she muttered, the wings folding awkwardly as she tried to make sense of her new appendages.

Rose turned her attention to Ed's unconscious form. "He's stable, but we must get him back to Wolf's Run to ensure his full recovery."

Alice, casting a glance at Victoria, quipped, "And you need a bath. After this mess, you've won the 'most in need of cleaning' award."

Victoria laughed tiredly, brushing sweat and grime from her face. "Fair enough. First, though, we need to figure out how to transport Ed. He reverted to human form, but he's still heavy."

Rose scanned the nearby trees. "We could fashion a sled or stretcher from branches and try to share the weight."

Alice crouched next to Ed, assessing his size and weight. "I'm probably the only one here strong enough to carry him any distance. Let's get to it; the sooner we're out of here, the better."

Rose's words energized the group. "Alright," she declared, "let's not waste any more time. I'm hungry, and the sooner we get Ed back to Wolf's Run, the sooner we can all rest and eat."
