Progenitor's Burden

Chapter 2.41: A Pause in the Storm

The forest remained eerily still as the group worked on the makeshift stretcher. They used sturdy branches and strong vines, weaving them into a frame that would bear Ed's weight. Once completed, the stretcher felt stable, a small victory amid their exhaustion.

With Ed securely placed on the stretcher, Alice stepped forward, taking hold of the leading ends. She adjusted her grip, her muscles already anticipating the strain. With a determined breath, she began pulling. The weight was significant, and each step sent a jolt through her arms, but she pressed forward. The trek to Wolf's Run would be grueling, but their determination pushed them onward.

As the group fell into a rhythm, Victoria, still processing the events that had unfolded, spoke up. "I unlocked a new skill during all that," she said, her voice carrying a mix of fatigue and curiosity. "It's called Venom Purge."

Rose glanced over, adjusting her pace to match. "What's it do?"

Victoria flexed her fingers, the memory of the glowing mana still fresh. "It lets me isolate and guide toxins—or anything harmful—out of someone's system. It's not instant, though. I have to channel it; the mana drain depends on how much I put into it. It's what let me save Ed."

New Skill: Venom Purge (Uncommon)

Description: Harnessing precise mana manipulation and healing magic, Venom Purge allows the user to isolate, redirect, and expel toxins, curses, or harmful substances from a target. This skill purges the affliction with focus and control while stabilizing the target's health.

Effects:

Toxin Isolation:

Identifies and halts the spread of harmful substances during channeling.

Guided Expulsion:

Redirects toxins or curses to a controlled exit point, expelling them effectively.

Stabilizing Flow:

Provides continuous healing during use, restoring minor health and maintaining stability.

Note: This spell can be channeled for prolonged use. Mana drain depends on the intensity and duration of the channeling.

Alice, her voice steady despite the exertion, chimed in. "Good to know. Let's hope you don't need to use it again soon."

Victoria nodded, though her expression was thoughtful. "I'll need to practice with it more. The situation with Ed was… overwhelming. I need to be ready if something like that happens again."

Rose gave her a reassuring glance. "You handled it when it mattered. That's what counts."

Victoria walked alongside the stretcher, her wings still outstretched, their faint shimmer catching the light as she moved. She glanced over her shoulder, her brow furrowed. "Umm… does anyone know how I make these go away?"

Rose smirked, her tone light. "I'd imagine intent has a lot to do with it. But really, you've got wings. Do you want them to disappear before you've had a chance to check them out and see what they can do?"

Victoria sighed, running a hand along one wing, the feathers soft under her touch. "I'd love to figure them out," she admitted, wrapping the wing slightly around her shoulder to inspect it more closely. "But just… not right now, ya know?"

Alice, walking a few steps ahead, glanced back. "What do they feel like? Can you feel them, or are they just sort of… there?"

Victoria flexed the wings slightly, her head tilting as she considered the question. "They don't feel like much, honestly. I can tell they're there now that I know about them, but they're not dragging me backward or messing with my balance. If anything, they're stabilizing me. I can feel them making small adjustments as I walk."

Rose nodded. "Try focusing on sending them back. I figure they'll disappear if that's what you want."

Victoria stayed close to the stretcher, her attention never far from Ed as she nodded. "Just for now," she murmured. Closing her eyes briefly, she concentrated. The wings shimmered faintly before beginning to retract, their luminous feathers fading as they folded into her back. Within minutes, they were gone, leaving her shoulders bare once more.

She exhaled in relief, her steps steady as the group pressed forward, the forest closing around them.

"Man, Ed, you're a literal 'heavyweight' now," she mused, feeling the strain in her arms. Glancing at her real-life game-like screen, a notification blinked brightly: Level 25. "That's fast," she pondered, comparing her journey to Sinclair's slower ascent to Level 20.

The accumulation of unspent stat points caught her eye next. "125 points... that's a lot I've been saving up," she thought. She remembered Sinclair's vague hints about the potential evolution at Level 25, causing her to wonder if the process required some sort of resource or effort.

"And if this weight continues," she reflected, feeling Ed's bulk behind her, "I might need those points just to get him out of here safely. Bolstering my strength could be essential." The weight of responsibility pressed on her, not just from Ed but from the choices ahead and the mysteries left by Sinclair.

Deciding to utilize her accumulated points, Alice channeled 20 each into Strength, Endurance, and Agility. The sudden boost consumed almost half of her stored points. However, the unexpected influx of skill choice notifications caught her off guard.

Upon closer inspection, she noticed a section denoting 'Race Skills.' Connecting the dots between skills and levels, Alice quickly briefed the team on her recent actions.

"Interesting... I've just assigned some points, propelling me to level 12. Now, I have access to two race-specific skills. And at Race Level 1, I get a choice between three distinct skills," Alice explained.

Victoria's gaze sharpened with concern. "Why did you suddenly assign points? Is everything alright?"

Feeling the weight of Ed's form behind her, Alice replied, "He's quite the load to bear. Plus, reaching what I believe is Level 25 should align with our race upgrade opportunity. It seemed logical to enhance my abilities now, especially since we'll likely explore those upgrades soon."

"Do you want to allocate the rest of your points now, or would you prefer to wait?" Rose inquired, curious about Alice's strategy.

Contemplating the question, Alice responded, "I've been mulling over this every time I've leveled up, so I've got a plan in mind. I still have 65 points left. I'll distribute them by adding 20 each to Constitution, Willpower, and Intelligence. I'll use the remaining 5 points on Agility, considering my combat style leans heavily towards speed."

She glanced towards Rose and Victoria, seeking their thoughts.

Victoria's voice held a tinge of anxiety, primarily rooted in her concern for Ed. "Alice, I believe you should proceed. Those enhanced stats might be crucial for us to navigate our way out with Ed safely."

Acknowledging the consensus, Alice initiated the allocation process, bracing herself for the transformation that often accompanied such changes. Rose and Victoria stood vigilant, surveying their surroundings. Being their initial path, the trail was familiar, and the absence of any recent spider encounters provided some solace. However, they remained alert, understanding that caution was paramount in this unpredictable environment.

The cascading notifications across Alice's screen were a whirlwind of activity. Once the flux subsided, a prominent prompt emerged. However, given their current situation and the potential implications of such a decision, Alice opted to table the matter for a more opportune moment. Consulting with the Beastkin elders about the ramifications of this choice seemed prudent.

After the momentary pause, Alice rose, feeling a new wave of power coursing through her. It wasn't just an incremental boost but a monumental leap in her capabilities.

Testing her newfound strength, she resumed transporting Ed. What once felt like dragging an immense weight now seemed akin to carrying a slightly heavy backpack. The difference was palpable.

With a nod to Rose and Victoria, the trio continued their trek. Though they felt more empowered, their vigilance didn't wane. Danger could lurk behind any tree or under any stone. But for any spider daring enough to approach them, Rose, with her enhanced prowess, made sure it regretted its decision.

Navigating their way out of the dense forest took twice as long without all members mobile. The weight of Ed's unconscious form and the unfamiliarity of the terrain made the journey laborious. Yet, despite the prolonged hours, none among the trio harbored any resentment towards Ed. They deeply understood the sacrifice and risk inherent in his role. As the party's tank, Ed willingly put himself in the direct line of danger, bearing the brunt of attacks to shield the others. His steadfastness allowed them to focus on their respective roles, minimizing their exposure to harm.

The sight of Wolf's Run emerging on the horizon was a balm for the trio's weary souls. Stretching out before them were the familiar rolling fields of their homeland, a patchwork of green expanses interrupted sporadically by remnants of traps – remnants of past battles against the beast waves. The sun cast a golden hue over the landscape, making the scars of war seem almost beautiful in the melancholic way that only home can.

Scattered across the fields, teams of various beastkin were hard at work. The rhythmic sound of digging could be heard as they laid the foundations for new fortifications. It was a vision of growth and resilience; the city was not just healing, but also preparing, expanding its defenses in anticipation of future challenges. The new fortification foundations hinted at plans to significantly enlarge the city's walls, a testament to the leadership's foresight and the community's shared determination.

The juxtaposition of the serene fields, the remnants of past struggles, and the city's evident preparation for future threats evoked a complex tapestry of emotions. There was pride in their community's resilience, sorrow for past losses, and hope for a safer, fortified future. In all its complexity, the sight of home was a poignant reminder of why they ventured into danger and what they were fighting to protect.

The bustling activity within the city gates momentarily paused as familiar faces emerged from the crowd. Bruce walked side by side with Amelia, her keen eyes missing nothing. Accompanying them was Chief Talgrin, eyes scanning everything around him.

As they converged, brief greetings were exchanged before Rose delved into an abridged account of their expedition. She touched upon their main challenges, emphasizing the encounter with the venomous spider and Ed's subsequent state.

Chief Talgrin, always one for efficiency, quickly dispatched a messenger to keep him updated on Ed's condition. He expected a comprehensive report from the healers.

Turning his discerning gaze back to the group, the Chief's stern countenance softened slightly. "Approaching your race's evolution, are you?" he remarked, with a note of approval. "It was wise of you, Alice, to refrain from advancing your race amid the forest. Such transitions can be unpredictable and intense. It could have been perilous for the entire group in your situation." The underlying message was evident: decisions made in the heat of the moment could have long-lasting consequences, and caution was always advised.

Rose spoke up, too: "I am also at that point and need to assign my points before updating my race. Do you have any suggestions?"

Chief Talgrin nodded, understandingly, at Rose's inquiry. "For point allocation, you should enhance your strengths and bolster areas that resonate with your combat style and personality. Trust your instincts."

His expression turned somber as he delved into the topic of race upgrades. "The initial race advancement is quite the experience," he began, recalling his past ordeal. "The process purges impurities from your being, and those impurities manifest externally. It's... not the most pleasant sight. Ensure you're clothed in garments you won't miss."

Victoria looked glum, "I am so close to level 25. I have about a level and a half to go."

Victoria's dejected tone drew the Chief's attention. "Every journey has its pace, Victoria. Reaching Level 25 is a milestone, but not the end of your growth. Embrace each level, each experience. Your time will come soon enough; when it does, you'll be ready." His words carried the weight of wisdom and experience, offering comfort and encouragement.

As they walked toward the designated area, Chief Talgrin calmly continued his explanation. "We have Earth mages who will form a containment pit where you stand during the race upgrade. This is to collect all the waste expelled from your bodies. Once the process is complete, a Fire mage will incinerate the waste material, converting it into ash. Buckets of water will be on hand for an immediate rinse before you move to a separate bathing area. Once all is said and done, you will have attained rank E in your respective races."

Noticing Rose's uneasy expression, he directly addressed her concerns, "The process itself isn't painful, but it can be quite disgusting. Depending on your body's current state, you might feel like you're being wrung out. The discomfort largely hinges on your institution and how 'pure' your system is now."

He paused momentarily to let his words sink in before adding, "And then there's the matter of the smell. Let's just say that it varies depending on the impurities expelled from your system. It can be somewhat... overwhelming, to say the least, if you're unprepared for it."

Both women felt a mix of anxiety and excitement about the impending change. Rose scanned her list of stats; she decided how best to use her ninety-one free points. Although she hadn't received as many free points as Alice, her stats had more automatically allocated points, which somewhat balanced things out.

Focusing on her highest stats, Intelligence and Willpower, Rose realized she needed to bolster her lower stats for a more balanced profile. She allocated ten points each to Endurance, Strength, and Agility, and gave fifteen to Constitution. She saved her settings after each allocation to avoid abrupt changes to her system.

With forty-six points remaining, she divided them evenly, adding twenty-three to both Intelligence and Willpower. This adjustment elevated all her base stats over one hundred, providing her with a robust foundation for future challenges.

With her stats now well-rounded and exceeding a base of 100 in each category, she felt confident about the upcoming race upgrade. If anything, she felt she was on a much stronger footing for whatever challenges lay ahead. The excitement at the potential transformation filled her with anticipation as they neared the area Chief Talgrin had prepared. This was a significant milestone in her journey, and she couldn't wait to see what changes it would bring.

Upon arriving at the designated area, they found it enclosed by temporary sheets strung up for privacy. They were instructed to remove any articles they didn't want to get dirty. Both women chose to keep on the self-cleaning garments that Sinclair had purchased for them from the in-game shop. In the worst-case scenario, they reasoned, they could always use a bit of magic to clean them.

After stepping into the enclosed area, they each brought up their menus and, with a mutual nod of reassurance, simultaneously selected the option to upgrade their race.

Instantly, their minds were flooded with light, and a warm sensation enveloped them. Later, they would describe the same unsettling feeling, as if something were crawling beneath their skin. While there was no actual pain, the experience was undeniably eerie.

The smell hit them next, and it was almost unbearable. A black fluid began to seep out of their pores and any available openings, filling the air with a cloying stench that made them both gag. Panicked and desperate to escape the odor, they noticed the buckets and quickly doused themselves with water, scrubbing their skin as if they could erase the smell.

Heeding Chief Talgrin's earlier advice, they moved on to the next section, where they found two large, wide rain barrels filled with steaming water. Grabbing another bucketful, they splashed themselves once more before jumping in to thoroughly wash off.

They remained in the barrels for quite some time, scrubbing their hair and skin repeatedly to ensure no trace of the foul substance remained. Nearly 40 minutes passed before they finally felt clean enough to emerge.

As they stepped out and began to dry off, they were greeted with applause. A crowd seemed to have gathered to celebrate their new ascension, showering them with enthusiastic congratulations.

Smiling and waving back at the crowd, Bruce and Amelia made their way through the throng of well-wishers and enveloped both women in big, warm hugs.

"We're so proud of you two. Congratulations," Bruce and Amelia said in unison, their voices tinged with pride and excitement.

"Thank you. It wasn't painful, but as Chief Talgrin said, the smell was incredibly unpleasant," Rose replied, still a little in awe of the whole experience.

Casting their eyes around, they noticed a food table had been laid out. Realizing they were suddenly quite hungry, they made a beeline for it. The crowd followed suit, everyone grabbing finger foods and engaging in lighthearted conversation as they mingled.

Chief Talgrin stepped forward, taking a moment to explain that it was customary to hold a small celebration like this one to honor the significant milestone of the first race upgrade. The sense of community was palpable, making the unpleasant aspects of their ascension seem like a small price to pay for such a monumental moment in their lives.

Alice glanced around and asked, "Where's Victoria?"

Bruce and Amelia exchanged a knowing look before Bruce gestured in a particular direction. "She's over there, tending to Ed. The healers said he's fine, just exhausted from the poison. He should be waking up anytime now."

A sense of expectation colored Amelia's gaze as she turned to the two women. "Is there something we should know about those two? Victoria has been quite attentive to him these past couple of days."

Caught off guard, Alice choked a little on her munching food. Rose seized the opportunity to reply. "It's nothing out of the ordinary. I think they have feelings for each other but are hesitant to act. Victoria is Sinclair's sister, and Ed is one of his closest friends. They probably want to talk to Sinclair when he returns to ensure it's all right with him."

Amelia let out a snort of amusement. "Sinclair adores both of them. He'd be overjoyed if two of the people he cares most about found comfort with each other in this unpredictable world."

Bruce grinned at his wife's practical perspective. "Ah, the folly of youth. Always waiting for this and that. If you're interested in someone, just tell them. The worst-case scenario is that they don't feel the same. And if they're your friend, it shouldn't make things awkward between you afterward."

His eyes locked onto Rose's as he spoke, causing her to blush and avert her gaze. The atmosphere was filled with unspoken understanding, adding another layer of complexity to the intricate web of relationships forming in their small community.

Breaking the awkward silence, Amelia interjected, "So, what did you gain from your levels and race upgrades?"

Alice took the lead in sharing her experience. "It seems I've gained some skill options. According to General Valthorn, you get one skill selection at Race Level 1, and then a new one every five levels. The same rule applies to your class. So, I should have six skills for my race and three for my class. Did you get the same thing for your Race upgrade?"

Rose navigated to her race entry and confirmed she had the same thing.

She continued her train of thought, pondering aloud, "It looks like I'll need to dedicate some time to sifting through these options. Is there someone well-versed enough to guide me through each skill as I consider them?"

Elder Dorgran, who had been eavesdropping, interjected graciously, "I've mentored many young cubs through their selections. I'd be honored to assist you both in picking your new skills."

Rose beamed at him, "Thank you so much, Elder Dolgran. We appreciate it. As you can see, we're somewhat new to all this."

"You may be new, but for some reason, your group exhibits a remarkable strength despite your relatively short time in the system," Dorgran observed, a hint of curiosity lacing his gruff tone.

"I also have the same number of skills to allocate," Rose said. "When would be a convenient time to discuss this?"

Elder Dorgran suggested, "Once everyone has finished their meals here, let's reconvene at the council building to delve into the matter."

The sense of community was palpable, a reassuring contrast to the dangers and uncertainties of their newfound lives. Elder Dorgran's guidance promised to be invaluable, and as they mingled amongst their friends and loved ones, both Alice and Rose couldn't help but feel optimistic about the journey ahead.

The next hour was a whirlwind of laughter, conversation, and shared experiences as everyone mingled. Hearing stories about others' ascensions and varying customs from different places was enlightening. It drove home that these new faces had truly become their community and extended family. As they looked around, it was clear there wasn't a single individual present they wouldn't defend with everything they had.

Ed and Victoria joined the group as the festivities started to wind down. Ed had awoken shortly after the ceremony and had been held back by Victoria's insistence on a medical check-up from one of the local witch doctors.

"Looks like I missed the party," Ed remarked, his complexion still slightly paler than usual.

A ripple of concerned glances passed through the crowd. "Are you sure you should be up and about?" Bruce inquired cautiously.

Ed shrugged, "Meh, lying in bed wasn't doing me any favors, and moving a bit seems to help. Plus, I gained a killer new skill and passive resistance. I'm now 34% resistant to basic and common poisons, and I've acquired a pain tolerance skill. It helps me focus on the fight by reducing the sensation of pain."

He shared this with a grin, making eye contact with his teammates. Victoria still seemed concerned, hovering close to him, her touch steadying him when he wobbled.

"So, what are you two planning to do next? I'll hold off on my ascension until tomorrow. Not up for that kind of ordeal today," Ed inquired.

Rose informed him of their imminent meeting with Elder Dolgran. "We're headed to meet with Elder Dolgran for some guidance on skill selection. You're welcome to join us to get the basics if you're interested," she suggested.

Just as they were about to step inside, a deep, ominous sound echoed from the distance, reverberating like a drumbeat through the woods. People froze in place, and startled yells and gasps broke the silence. Faces turned, eyes wide with confusion, as the unsettling noise hung in the air. Everyone knew, in that suspended moment, that the next chapter of their lives wouldn't just be exciting; it would also bring new challenges and unforeseen dangers.
