When they reached the bottom of the stairs, old Roy was playing chess while standing guard. In front of him were several young people and some slightly older ones complaining about his playing style, but they were having quite a bit of fun.
He moved his chess pieces back and forth and beat them continuously. This old man, although drunk, was very good at chess and used to take breaks to play when it was his turn to guard the door, as the permanent members of this place used to take turns.
"Old Roy, what did I tell you about playing chess during working hours?" Martin said as soon as he saw him.
Roy turned to look at him and noticed Ryan and Cecily standing next to him. "What are you doing here? Did you come to play with me, or is it time for a change?" he asked.
"Haha, dream on. You still have a long time on duty," Cecily teased from the side.
"Tsk." He grumbled. "Why do they put these old bones in charge of guarding something? Anyone could come along, beat me up, and steal everything."
"Hahaha." Martin laughed and gave him a little punch on the shoulder. "I'm sure those bones are tougher than any youngster's."
Although Roy had complaints, he couldn't say anything, and Martin spoke up first.
"I'm going in to get some items. Open it up, I'll be right back," he said.
"Items?" Roy looked at the two young men again. "Are these little guys going on an important mission?" he asked, surprised that they were going to use items.
"Haha, it looks like they have a good mission to accomplish."
"Oh." Although Roy was interested, he didn't ask any questions and simply moved to the front of the huge door.
It was as big as 7 meters high and 4 meters wide, the door was incredibly thick and its walls even more so. The entire mechanism seemed to be protected by spiritual energy, and a very powerful one at that.
So, to open the door, Roy needed to insert a key into the lock, which didn't actually remove any lock, but simply activated a spiritual mechanism that Roy ended up connecting to himself.
It only worked with permanent members of the guild, of which there are very few. At this moment, three stand out: Martin, Roy, and Magnus, with an honorable mention for Alan. The rest are not present.
In this way, he was able to open the door. "Come in," he shouted, as the huge door opened with splendor.
From inside emerged a cloud of cold smoke and a slightly colorful, yet dark atmosphere entered his visual perceptions.
Martin nodded to Roy and then entered with Ryan and Cecily.
Before them was a huge hallway built of gray rocks and very well paved between the rocks and the floor, with torches on either side that brought better lighting to the already colorful environment.
Surrounding them, what gave it that "colorful" and "lively" appearance was nothing more than a bunch of items of many types floating around them. Some were in boxes, held up by chains, others simply floated in the immensity of this room.
This place was possibly the lowest point that could be seen inside this underground construction, allowing the room to be large downwards, like a huge black hole, and also large upwards.
"This is our royal treasure room," Martin said suddenly. "Everything here is an item of historical antiquity.
Both Ryan and Cecily were in shock.
There were hundreds of items in this place.
Not a few, not dozens, hundreds!
These items are practically objects once used by the gods of the Second Age.
How long ago did the Second Age exist? No one knows. Its antiquity dates back too far in time, for just behind it was only the age known as the "Primordial Age," the first of the ages. The beginning of the world and its foundation.
All the founding myths converge there. The problem is that, until now, no specific records of how long these eras lasted have been found, so no one can know.
And here there are hundreds of items that belonged to that era.
The Larsen family has quite a few items. Cecily is aware of this because she has heard about it, although she has only seen one. But there are three of them, one of which is the reason why no one dares to mess with them.
On the other hand, the royal family also has a good number, several dozen or even 100 or 200. Honestly, it's not public knowledge, so there's no way Ryan would know, but he's sure they don't have many.
In fact, in the novel, there are only about 500 to 900 items in total.
Here, there are at least 700!
There may be more items here than are mentioned in the entire novel.
But it made a little sense.
Magnus is the most influential and daring explorer of ruins that has ever existed in this world (according to the novel). Surely all these treasures were donated by Magnus to the organization; it is the only viable way for there to be so many in a small organization like this.
Although with this they already have many items from the gods and also one of the most important treasures in the history of the world, that mirror.
"They don't look like a small organization," Ryan thought, smiling a little at this.
"Read this, it's a description of all the treasures here that I can lend you. Keep in mind that it's difficult for you to control a level 6 or 7 item, unless you're the questing type, so I'm not showing you the powerful items," said Martin, handing them a book with writings in it.
When he opened the book, Ryan was presented with a bunch of descriptions of the different items available, complete with drawings and everything.
There was a lot to choose from, but according to the organization's rules, he could only choose two.
Ryan quickly scanned the information and asked a few questions about several items, looking for one that was what he was looking for or would need. To tell the truth, he had underestimated the number of books there were, but there were 713 in total.
Reading all the information was a real challenge, but he took his time reading it and talking to Cecily to discuss which one would be best.
Among those, they realized that the Black Mother's Compass they had talked about before would not work because it had restrictions on use in proximity to vampires.
"As expected, it's that woman from the past," he thought.
One of her slogans was: destroy vampires.
No one knows why she was the greatest antagonist of vampires, but that was her reality.
So it couldn't be used, and surely the restriction had something to do with the fact that vampires were also nocturnal, but they have peculiarities that make them stronger, such as sucking blood and so on.
So that was completely ruled out.
On the other hand, the Memory of the Forgotten King was one that fit very well with what they were looking for, as did the Midnight Clock of Fallen Hill.
As they read and compared those two items with others, they found a peculiar one that immediately caught Ryan's attention.
Called the Madness of the Fallen Traitor.
It was an item that used spirituality to attack the mind of a specific person, marked by its bearer, causing them to fall into madness. He didn't know what kind of madness it was, but it sounded good for a mission like this.
It was a level 5 item, while the Memory of the Forgotten King and the Midnight Clock of Fallen Hill were both level 4.
Ryan made up his mind as soon as he saw the level 5 item. There were others that would surely work for him, but this one in particular reminded him of the Fallen Traitor God of the Abyss, a guy whose mental power was so potent that he could destroy them with a single attack.
So his item had to be impactful. In the novel, an item of that type was used, and it was really good for mental attacks.
Now, regarding the other two... he ended up choosing the item Remembrance of the Forgotten King.
After marking those two, Martin nodded. "What kind of mission are you planning to do that you need those two?" he asked, curious.
"It's a mission to find someone who is missing," Ryan replied.
"A missing person? A rescue mission?" Martin was surprised that they had asked for such good items just for that, but Ryan shook his head.
"It's to search for a wanted traitor."
"Oh..." Martin nodded and quickly moved his spirituality forward. It quickly connected with the spirituality of the surroundings and traveled rapidly among it to search for the chosen items.
In no time, two boxes came flying. They looked quite large, but as they got closer, they became smaller and smaller until they were the size of the palm of a hand, and Martin held them easily.
"These are the two items. There are several things you need to know before using them. First, they are a bit aggressive when used, so you have to be careful who you target. Second, as long as you use them carefully, you won't have any problems, but because they are aggressive, they may sometimes try to attack you. Third, you must sign this delivery contract to ensure that we maintain control over what comes in and out," he said.
