My College Teacher is My Children's Mom

Chapter 250: Rural Life

Ten minutes later, the babies had finished eating and clamored to go see the pigs.

Pan's mother glanced outside, where the sky was already dark, and coaxed the children. "The pigs are sleeping now. We'll see them when we wake up tomorrow."

Jiang Chenchen told the babies, "The pigs are sleeping. I'll let you see them tomorrow."

The babies were a bit disappointed, but still very happy. They played with toys in the living room, where Jiang Chenchen still had some of hers left. It was like a treasure hunt for the children as they searched here and there.

After the meal, Pan's mother went to do the dishes. It was then that Pan's father started to set up a table and chairs in the yard, eating peanuts and drinking wine. There was a single bright lamp lighting the yard.

The children's games moved from the living room to the yard, where they squatted by a garlic shoot patch and discovered a new treasure.

Fourth Treasure yelled and ran over, tugging at Lin Feng's arm. "Daddy, come see something!"

All the children were incredibly excited, and Lin Feng couldn't help but ask curiously, "What did you find?"

The children pointed to a snail crawling out from a crevice between the stones. "Daddy, look, snails! It's a snail!"

Lin Feng squatted down with them, matching their excitement. "Wow, it really is a snail."

Second Treasure ran over to bring Zhang Yuxi to see. The couple acted as if they had never seen snails in their lives, exclaiming in wonder. After watching the snails for a long time, they wanted to let the children observe on their own.

But just as Zhang Yuxi stood up, her two little guardians grabbed her at the same time.

"Mommy, don't go! Look, more snails are crawling out."

"Mommy, don't go, let's watch together."

Zhang Yuxi had no choice but to continue watching. The children might be curious about this, but I'm not! I've seen enough; I want to leave.

After a while longer, she watched the children feeding the snails with garlic leaves. Surely I can leave now, she thought.

Ha, how naive!

Second Treasure handed Zhang Yuxi a piece of garlic leaf. "Mommy, here!"

Third Treasure took her hand and led her to feed the snails.

Zhang Yuxi was close to tears. She looked over at her husband, who was earnestly feeding the snails with garlic leaves, and felt a surge of admiration for his dedication. She leaned in and whispered, "Honey, I don't want to watch the snails crawl anymore, and I don't want to feed them garlic leaves..."

Even as a father, Lin Feng still had a childlike side. He continued feeding them with relish. "Oh? Then you can go." He had a way of solving her dilemmas in a single move. "Come on, kids, let's feed the snails. Mommy is going to the toilet."

Zhang Yuxi hurried off. Oh man, my legs are going numb.

After finishing the dishes, Pan's mother went upstairs to prepare the room for Lin Feng and his family. "This is a new cotton quilt I just fluffed a few days ago. It's all clean, so please don't mind it."

"Also, this four-piece bedding set has been washed but not used, so it's clean too, rest assured."

Zhang Yuxi quickly said, "Auntie, there's no need. We can just sleep in the car. There's a bed in there."

"Ah, there's a bed in the car? Let me see."

Pan's mother followed Zhang Yuxi to the RV, looking at it as if she had discovered some rare treasure. She touched things here and there, looking all around. Just think, technology is so advanced now. They make cars just like houses. This car can't be cheap, right? It must have cost a fortune.

After touring the RV, Pan's mother still insisted that Zhang Yuxi sleep in the room. "A bed in a car can't be as comfortable as a proper one. I'll make the bed for you; it's all clean."

Zhang Yuxi had no other choice. "Then we'll be troubling you, Auntie."

"No trouble, no trouble at all," Pan's mother said quickly. "Jiang Ming told me that Lei'er is working at your hotel. I hope she hasn't been too much trouble for you."

Pan's mother was an efficient person. It didn't take long for her to make the bed. "Alright, you all get settled and go to sleep early."

"Thank you, Auntie!"

Meanwhile, Lin Feng was washing the babies' faces and hands with warm water, followed by their little feet. Pan's mother used a solar water heater and also frequently cooked on a traditional stove, so there was always hot water available.

The children still wanted to play with Jiang Chenchen. Lin Feng checked the time and frowned; they were already going to bed half an hour later than usual.

"Babies, it's time for bed!"

The children agreed, but only after making a plan to see the pigs first thing in the morning.

It was colder here than in the city, but luckily the cotton quilts were thick and warm. The bed was 1.8-meters wide and placed in the middle of the room, not against any walls, so the sleeping space for the children was very small. Once they fell asleep, they began to roll around, tossing and turning into all sorts of positions.

Zhang Yuxi couldn't sleep well at all, and the same went for Lin Feng. But thanks to his Skills, his sleep quality was still guaranteed.

「The next day.」

Zhang Yuxi simply couldn't get up, saying she wanted to sleep a little longer. Lin Feng got the babies ready and went to have breakfast.

Jiang Chenchen waved her hands excitedly. "Grandma is going to feed the pigs later! We can finally see the pigs!"

The babies couldn't have been happier.

Pan's mother was speechless. Pigs are dirty and smelly, what's so interesting about them? "You all wait here. I'll go wash the pigsty and clean it up first."

With that, Pan's mother picked up the bucket of pig feed and left. The house had a pigsty built on a lower level. Inside were three pigs, being fattened up to be butchered and sold for the New Year.

Half an hour later, Pan's mother had finished cleaning. She led the children to the pigsty. It was relatively clean now, but a smell was definitely still present. Thanks to her cleaning and some incense she had lit inside, it wasn't too unpleasant.

Third Treasure was a delicate little princess. Upon smelling the odor, her expression changed instantly.

"Third Treasure, why don't you wait up there for Daddy?"

She just shook her head and buried her face obediently in Lin Feng's shoulder.

The children were amazed to see the pigs. In all their lives, they had never seen a live one before. After all, there aren't any pigs at the zoo.

"Wow... the pig's ears are so big..."

"They're so fat! Their bellies are so, so big..."

"Their tails are curled up, that's so funny..."

After watching for about ten minutes, the children lost interest. Besides, pigs that big weren't cute anymore.

Once the novelty wore off, Pan's mother asked if they wanted to go dig for sweet potatoes in the field. The children were filled with curiosity about every aspect of rural life.

Lin Feng called Zhang Yuxi to get up, telling her they were going to dig sweet potatoes.

"Dig sweet potatoes? I want to go too!"

Zhang Yuxi hurriedly finished her breakfast, and the family followed Pan's mother to the fields to help. Pan's father had gone to plant trees early in the morning and wouldn't be back for lunch, as meals were provided there.

As far as the eye could see, there were green mountains and clear waters. The morning was cold, but the air was incredibly fresh—a feeling you could never get in the city.

A thought crossed Lin Feng's mind. "Honey, how about we build a house in the countryside for our retirement someday?"

Zhang Yuxi nodded. "That sounds great!"

"Wow, there are oranges!"

"And pomelos!"

Zhang Yuxi was like a curious child, absolutely delighted. Seeing her so happy, Lin Feng said, "If you like them, how about I plant some fruit trees in our yard when we get back?"

Zhang Yuxi nodded vigorously. "Yes, yes! That sounds great!"

Pan's mother smiled. "If you like to eat them, just pick some. We know the family that owns this grove. I'll give them a heads-up later."

Zhang Yuxi was thrilled. "Really? We can?"

"No problem, go ahead and pick."

Zhang Yuxi immediately became the leader of the pack, taking the babies to pick oranges and pomelos. They were all homegrown and untended, so naturally, they couldn't compare to the ones in a fruit store.

"Honey, come and help!" she called out.

Nearby, Jiang Ming was holding his son and picking some fruit. The babies watched with envy, urging Lin Feng to hurry over.

"Daddy, fruit! Second Treasure wants to pick fruit!"

"Come on, Daddy! There are so many fruits here, so many..."

Fourth Treasure grew impatient and rushed toward Lin Feng. "Daddy, can you hurry up?"

Lin Feng picked him up. "Let's go, let's go!"

There were many orange trees, and Lin Feng found the one with the most fruit. The couple held up the babies so they could pick them. The other babies, who couldn't reach even by jumping, could only gather the ones that had fallen to the ground.

An hour later, one orange tree had been almost picked clean. Lin Feng quickly stopped them, saying they couldn't pick anymore.

Pan's mother put all the fruit into Jiang Ming's back-basket. "It's fine. Their children all live in the city, so this fruit usually goes uneaten. They just occasionally take some to the city to sell. Don't judge them by their looks; they're very sweet. They all come from old trees."

There were also pomelos. No one knew the variety; they had green skin and were small. They picked three to take with them.

"These are also delicious," Pan's mother added. "They're crispy and sweet."

As they spoke, they arrived at the field. Pan's mother and Jiang Ming, each carrying a hoe, began digging into the earth to unearth the sweet potatoes. In a neighboring plot not far away, someone was tending to their green vegetables. They knew Pan's mother and called out a greeting.

"Oh, your son-in-law is back to help?"

"Yes, he's helping for a few days to finish digging up this last patch."

"Your husband is planting trees. How long will that take?"

"I don't know."

While they chatted, Zhang Yuxi led the babies on an adventure through the fields.

Pan's mother laughed. "Your wife looks just like a child sometimes."

Lin Feng's job was to pile up the sweet potatoes as they were dug out. "That's just how she is," he said. "As curious as a child."

Pan's mother remarked with some emotion, "The countryside used to be more bustling. Now, there's no one around. It only gets lively during the holidays."
