When they got home, it was time for the piano lesson.
At first, Lin Feng was very worried. He thought the violin, drums, and piano would confuse the third child. As it turned out, he was overthinking things. The third child had a strong ability to absorb information.
The piano teacher was a man who was quite well-known in Yangcheng, so his teaching fees were quite high. Actually, this wasn't the original teacher. Because they discovered the third child had a gift for it, they switched to a better teacher partway through. This wasn't Lin Feng's suggestion; the educational institution had negotiated with him and they had reached a consensus. This teacher commanded a high price and was also very young, not yet thirty.
After eating some fruit and snacks, the third child went upstairs with the teacher. Meanwhile, the eldest and fourth children began their own practice.
This left no one to keep the second child company.
Lin Feng called her over. "Second Treasure, come and talk with Daddy for a bit, okay?"
"Sure, what should we talk about?" the second child asked while helping peel garlic.
Lin Feng asked, "Do you like doing arts and crafts?"
The second child, peeling the garlic diligently, answered with focus, "I love it!"
Lin Feng praised her, "The pink chrysanthemum you made today was absolutely beautiful!"
The second child turned her head and smiled sweetly. "Thank you, Daddy!"
Lin Feng took the peeled garlic from her hands and gave her some scallions to handle. The second child might have seemed carefree, but when it came to certain meticulous tasks, only she could do them so well.
The father and daughter chatted in the kitchen until the third child's lesson was over.
When Zhang Yuxi returned, the second child pulled her over, eager to talk about her arts and crafts homework. Seeing the second child so full of spirit, Zhang Yuxi played along enthusiastically.
"Wow, so chrysanthemums have a history of over three thousand years! Mommy is just learning that now!"
"You made a pink one, did you? Is there a photo Mommy can see?"
The second child pattered over to get Lin Feng's phone. "Daddy has a photo on his phone."
Flipping through the album, she pointed to a picture. "Mommy, this is the one I made. Is it pretty?"
Zhang Yuxi nodded, hugging the second child as the mother-daughter pair looked at the photo together. "It's beautiful! The one you made looks so lifelike!"
"Whose is this one? It looks a bit rushed." The second child's handiwork was extremely conspicuous among the pile of other projects. Some barely resembled chrysanthemums, while others were completely unrecognizable, looking more like lumps of clay.
The second child covered her mouth and giggled. "Mommy, that's my little sister's!"
Zhang Yuxi was surprised. "The third child made that..."
Lin Feng had not only taken pictures but also recorded videos of their presentations. Hmm, the third child is still the same as ever. I'm not sure if it's her personality or if she has some social anxiety, like me.
Lin Feng had already served the dinner. "Honey, kids, wash your hands and come eat!"
Passing by the dining room on her way to wash her hands, Zhang Yuxi took a deep sniff. "Darling, what did you stew? It smells so good!"
Lin Feng smiled and said, "It's black-bone chicken soup."
The black-bone chicken had been brought over by Liu Bo's parents, along with a butchered goose and some other free-range chickens. Being free-range, the black-bone chicken didn't have much meat and was rather skinny. But once it was stewed, the soup had a flavor that you simply couldn't get from the ones sold in markets or supermarkets.
Lin Feng poured each of the four children a small bowl of the soup. He had added quite a few medicinal ingredients to this batch, and he worried that if the children drank too much, it might be bad for them. So, it was just one small bowl for each.
Lin Feng ate quickly. "Honey, after I finish, I'm going to make a trip to Liu Bo's house to bring some of this soup to An Lan." Whenever Lin Feng made something delicious, he would always share some with them.
Zhang Yuxi nodded. "Alright. I'll wash the bowls later."
"Thanks for your hard work, honey!"
"It's no trouble at all! Not nearly as much work as you do, dear!"
After finishing his meal, Lin Feng filled a large container from a lunch box set and also brought along some homemade wontons. When he arrived, An Lan and Liu Bo were in the middle of dinner. Liu Bo's cooking skills were mediocre at best, but An Lan, as picky as she was, endured it. She had no choice; nursing the baby all day left her with no energy to cook. She could only supervise Liu Bo from the side. Still, Liu Bo's culinary skills had improved significantly.
DING-DONG. Liu Bo opened the door. "Bro, what brings you here?"
Lin Feng entered the foyer and changed into slippers, handing the container and the bag to Liu Bo. "This is some black-bone chicken soup I stewed tonight, and the bag has some small wontons."
"Thanks, Bro! Sorry to make you come all this way."
"What's the trouble? It's not for you anyway," Lin Feng joked.
An Lan came over. "Oh my, we were just talking about making black-bone chicken stew." She peeked into the bag at the small wontons. They were frozen perfectly, each one separate. They were the size he made for his own children, small enough for a single bite. The wontons he brought this time alone must have weighed two or three pounds, and Lin Feng had wrapped every single one himself. An Lan couldn't help but be impressed.
"Where's Guo Guo? I'll just see him for a moment, and then I'll head out!"
"He's asleep!"
No sooner had An Lan spoken than Guo Guo's voice sounded from the other room. An Lan went to check and found Guo Guo awake in his crib.
She smiled. "Did you wake up because you heard Daddy Lin's voice?"
Ever since Lin Feng had cured Guo Guo's colic, An Lan had decided on her own that Lin Feng would be 'Daddy.' Zhang Yuxi was 'Mommy Zhang,' and Lin Feng was 'Daddy Lin.' Guo Guo was growing to look more and more like An Lan, though on closer inspection, he resembled Liu Bo more around the eyes and brows. He had a robust and energetic personality, but his features were becoming more delicate, and he had an adorable smile.
"Director Lin, you hold him for a bit," An Lan said. "I'll come feed him his meal after I finish eating."
Lin Feng smiled. "Go on, eat!"
Guo Guo adored Lin Feng. Every time Lin Feng held him, he was perfectly behaved and would break into a smile at the slightest amusement. Lin Feng checked his diaper, then got some water to wash his bottom.
An Lan clucked her tongue. "Director Lin, why don't you just raise this child!"
Lin Feng chuckled. "Sure, you two go ahead and have another one."
An Lan sipped her soup. "In your dreams! If you want a child, you and Yuxi can have one yourselves!"
Guo Guo was plump and fair-skinned, just as the eldest had been as a baby. After playing with Guo Guo for a while, Lin Feng picked up the empty container to leave.
"Director Lin, where did you buy that lunch box?" An Lan asked. "It looks like you've been using it for years."
As he changed his shoes, Lin Feng replied, "I bought it when the quadruplets were just a few months old. All these years have passed, and the insulation is still excellent." He waved to the baby. "Bye-bye, Guo Guo! Daddy Lin will visit another day!"
Guo Guo squirmed, stretching his body out as if wanting Lin Feng to hold him again. Lin Feng's heart melted. He put the container down and held the baby for another moment.
An Lan suddenly had an idea. "Director Lin, try carrying the baby out. Let's see if Guo Guo misses his mommy!"
Lin Feng pretended to walk towards the door with Guo Guo, while An Lan even waved goodbye to her son. Guo Guo remained completely unfazed, perfectly content in Lin Feng's arms.
An Lan laughed and scolded affectionately, "You little heartless thing... Fine, just go home with your Daddy Lin."
Lin Feng turned back and handed Guo Guo to An Lan. "Alright, Daddy Lin is really leaving this time!"
The moment the door closed, an unhappy expression appeared on Guo Guo's face as he gazed longingly at the doorway.
An Lan tapped her son's nose. "You little heartless thing. What's wrong, don't you want your mommy anymore? Come on, time for milk!"
Guo Guo was nothing if not honest. Upon smelling his meal, he latched on and began to suckle noisily.
An Lan snorted softly. "Does your Daddy Lin have this? I'm telling you, only your mommy has this! We'll see if you still want me after this!"
