Chapter 47: Nothing is Taboo
After Mr. Dove left, I closed the window, took a deep breath, and my gaze fell on the Quintessence supplement in my hand.
“Things are getting more and more complicated....”
I carefully put the supplement away, then returned to the stove to continue preparing dinner.
Although the aroma of the food was still enticing, my mind was clearly no longer on it.
The next morning.
I arrived at the classroom and greeted Vilnia.
“Good morning, Vilnia.”
“Good morning, Mel.”
Seeing me take the initiative to greet her, Vilnia responded very happily.
“Did you sleep well last night?”
“So-so.”
I said.
“Last night, Mr. Dove came looking for me.”
Hearing this, Vilnia was slightly taken aback, then looked left and right.
Seeing that Ridel was not in the classroom, Vilnia breathed a slight sigh of relief, then lowered her voice and said: “What did that Messenger tell you?”
“He gave me this.”
I said, taking the two Quintessence supplements out of my schoolbag and showing them to Vilnia.
“This is.... a Quintessence supplement?”
“He wants us to help find the ritual site that the Omniscience Society has set up in the school. Of course, we only need to find it.”
I said.
“Saint Clement's Lyceum and The Fifth Department have limited manpower, and they have basically all been dispatched to various places in Dunke City.”
Hearing this, Vilnia looked at the Quintessence supplement in my hand and pondered for a moment.
“But our activity time at school is also very limited, basically just the time during breaks and the lunch break. It's not very practical if we want to search over a large area in the school.”
“What about Saturday afternoon?”
I said.
“When school lets out on Saturday afternoon, we just need to hide in advance, right?”
“That's one way.... After school on Saturday afternoon, the school library will still be open for a while.”
Vilnia thought for a moment, then nodded.
“Let's do that then.”
We discussed the details of Saturday's operation in low voices, and at the same time, more and more students entered the classroom.
When we saw Ridel walk in, Vilnia and I immediately stopped talking and pretended that nothing was happening.
Seeing this, Ridel cast a questioning glance at us but didn't ask anything, merely standing at the lectern and announcing the start of the class.
Throughout the morning, my thoughts were wandering.
I was thinking about the possible location of the Omniscience Society's setup.
The whole school wasn't that big; after all, it was a public school, and just meeting the basic needs of the students was already its limit.
Considering the ritual needs to conform to the concept of “Knowledge”, places like the playground and the warehouse can be ruled out.
The only remaining places are the library and the classrooms.
But the entire school has three grades, with five classrooms per grade, for a total of fifteen rooms.
Not a single classroom is idle, and not every classroom has a book corner.
My own classroom, for example, doesn't have one.
Taking a step back, even if there was a book corner, how many books can one book corner hold?
Could it be in the library....?
I frowned.
Just then, Vilnia's voice reached my ear.
“Let's go, Mel, time to eat.”
Vilnia's voice pulled me back to reality from my scattered thoughts.
I came to my senses and nodded at Vilnia.
“Mm, let's go then.”
In the noisy cafeteria, students bustled about, the clatter of trays and the sound of conversation rising and falling.
Vilnia and I found a secluded corner to sit down.
This spot had our backs to the wall, which was good for preventing others from eavesdropping on our conversation.
"I was just thinking about the ritual site,” I poked at the food on my plate with a fork and said in a low voice, “If the ritual is to be held in the school, the most suitable place should be the library.”
Vilnia swallowed the food in her mouth and nodded thoughtfully.
“Actually, I think so too. Considering that so many books are ritual props, the only place that can store them is the library. As for the classrooms, there are students in class during the day, and the daily traffic is so high that it's easy for people to notice if something is wrong.”
“But it's not like we haven't been to the library, and it doesn't feel like an altar to me at all.”
I said with a frown.
“Does the god's descent ritual only focus on concept and Quintessence, without caring about appearance?”
“That I don't know,” Vilnia spread her hands, “I've never tried to hold a ritual, but as far as I know, rituals need to have a clear target. The library has the insignia representing (Knowledge), so it should be fine, right?”
I picked up some noodles with my fork and put them in my mouth.
The noodles were a bit overcooked, tasting floury, and the texture wasn't very good.
I chewed the limp noodles, my brow slightly furrowed, then put down my fork and said to Vilnia in a low voice:
“But so many students go in and out of the library every day. If a ritual was really set up, it's impossible for it not to be discovered, right?”
Vilnia thought for a moment, then answered in a low voice:
“That's the problem. Maybe they used some kind of concealment method. For example, using a mystical art to hide the traces of the ritual.”
“There's a mystical art like that?”
“Of course, but the channels to obtain it are strictly controlled. Its name is (Nothing is Taboo).”
Vilnia said.
“Delimit an area, and no matter how outrageous things that happen in this area are, to people outside the area, they will be regarded as normal phenomena. The essence of this mystical art is the destruction of rules, but because it is particularly effective in dealing with special situations, people from The Fifth Department also use it. After all, sometimes, sudden supernatural events are hard to avoid and will always be seen by ordinary people. That's when this mystical art is needed.”
“If that's the case, how are we supposed to discover it?”
I frowned.
“This is just a guess. The channels to obtain this mystical art.... well, for believers of (Knowledge), the one thing they don't lack is mystical arts.”
Vilnia tore off pieces of the bread in her hand and put them in her mouth.
“But the area covered by the god's descent ritual should be quite large. If they were to use a mystical art to cover such a large area, it would be obviously impossible. The consumption of Quintessence would be too great, and it would be easily discovered by believers of (Order). Believers of (Order) are very sensitive to any existence that destroys order and creates disorder.”
