Mana Wells

Chapter 96: Anticipation

The first problem with the plan came right after Kurt left the carriage to explain everything to the goblins, and how Joe was going to have to blast the wall. He found that to be exciting. While the other two would be coming with him and Talia into the city to find Sara.

The problem though, was Harvey had managed to sneak on the carriage. So that meant he would have to stay with Kurt now, luckily it could fit snuggly in the large pockets of the robes, though it did move around a little. The idea it was going to stay quiet could simply be tossed out the window. But it would be worse if it was caught around the army here.

Joe's incense burner seemed to be working very well, as if a cloud of smoke just covered him, this would make his hiding even easier. As it would just look like an extra smoky priest for the most part. The two crews separated. They were going close to the opposite side of the city walls, once the mayhem started Kurt and the rest would scale the walls, and try to quickly find Sara and get out. Hopefully they would also get Laura but that was secondary in Kurt's mind, his people first. And there was no guarantee still Laura would come, and they wouldn't have time to argue with her.

Talia came and had a few daggers and sling, she also would have her earth powers. Kurt had his sword, as did Hank and Tom his Warbow, and full quiver. Hank and Joe had a conversation that Kurt didn't make out, but they had exchanged a few things, the goblins knew their tactics better than Kurt.

The time seemed to move slowly, and quietly. They had decided that the cover of knight was unnecessary, it would be better for the siege army to see all the positions, and the night would be better for those familiar inside the city. It was already late afternoon so the battle wouldn't begin until the next day. This also gave Joe time to prepare an actual circle to use when he made his attack.

A big thorn in the plan is their robes that helped them get into the army's tent was going to make them a target inside the walls, and it wasn't like they planned on the goblins changing. So a stealth entry seemed impossible.

"So how are you going to get us up there?" said Hank.

"I could scale that wall fairly fast," said Tom. Tom being a scout meant his hand could easily dig into hard objects, as they needed to find a way to the high ground. Kurt had seen this in action before. But it also meant he was a target on the way up.

"I don't think we will need that, I can take one of you on a platform, Tom probably should come with me, as he can fire his bow as well."

"What about me?" said Hank.

"You're going to get in my back," said Kurt, "and we are going to jump up there. It won't take us long that way."

So they made a camp to sleep for the night. Talia had chosen to take the tent with Kurt, which no one objected to, it was almost an expectation.

"So is this your first time in a battle?" Talia said to Kurt after they got alone.

"Sort of, like there was this Giant Lizard Ant thing, but that was against a monster, and when we cleared the gate. Nothing like this."

"Well, these things can get a little dicey, what you have to remember is not to dwell on a mistake and keep going forward."

"This isn't your first time?"

"No, the Valentine clan sometimes participates in skirmishes between the nations on our continent. I've seen the battlefield before, it's not something you forget, even when you try."

"Yeah," said Kurt, "so you've killed someone before?"

"Yes, many actually, and lead others to their deaths, it's always so much faster than you expect it to be."

"I noticed that as well," said Kurt, "when I," a tear started to form in his eyes, "it seemed so effortless."

Talia gave Kurt a hug, "it's okay Kurt, we just need to get Sara out, we aren't the ones on the front line this time."

"I just wish things were different," said Kurt.

They continued to talk, but the tension of what they were about to do the next day never left the room. The nerves, how quiet it became before what Kurt knew was going to be loud the next day. He knew that knocking down a wall was going to start a whole mess of a situation, and who knew what tricks the fire clan had in store for something like that?

They were easily outnumbered, the armies of the two kingdoms would prevail, they just couldn't see it yet. Or there was no one in the Fire clan left to negotiate the terms of a surrender. How could their pride handle just giving up after one attack?

Kurt struggled to sleep that night, waking up to the same nightmares. The same sounds of the man grasping his throat, the gurgles. The scream that couldn't come out his mouth. It was probably going to happen again tomorrow. How had Kurt gotten himself into this? He wasn't supposed to be a soldier was he? He turned his head again into his pillow, tried to close his eyes and rest for the next day. Again. Waiting for the anticipation.

Harvey had found a nice spot next to him, at least one of them didn't have any trouble sleeping it seemed. Better put out some food for him, he didn't want an alarm like that with Talia in the other cot. Who knows what people will think if she screams. The two heads of the Hydra wrapped each other, both heads eyes closed.

Harvey had gotten noticeably bigger than the first time Murt saw him. It was soon going to be hard for him to just hide in a pocket or clothing like he was. He was approaching the size of a small puppy now, or a large kitten. This was four times larger at least.
