I'm Trying To Go Broke, So Why Do I Keep Getting Richer?!

Chapter 69: The Price of Wealth

"Are you listening to me?" Blaze asked, seeing Leo distracted.

"Huh?" Leo raised his head. "Yeah, I heard everything you said."

Although he was still a little out of it, he didn't miss a single word that Blaze said.

"You're saying that there's a high chance that they have already left this space sector?" he asked.

"That's correct. Although it was for a brief moment, we did pick up strange signatures going farther and farther from earth. But before we could track it, the signature disappeared," Blaze explained further.

"Probably because the ship entered warp, making it impossible to track it anymore."

Leo felt really conflicted. Did he lose Kaelus again? He couldn't help but wonder if he made a mistake by not alerting Voldred in the first place.

'If I had known this would happen, I would have delayed my trip to Lionels a little longer. Not only did I not get the funding, but I even lost Kaelus..."

His fists were clenched tighter. Everything was starting to make sense now.

This battle didn't hurt Kaelus. But he was probably worried that this commotion might give away their location to Voldred, which made them leave in a hurry.

There was only one thing which he didn't understand. Where was Timmy? Was he also taken by Kaelus? Or was he still dragging his feet somewhere, trying to find a way back to Glitzy?

"What about the human that was with him?" he asked Blaze, who shook his head lightly.

"We used all trackers, even getting access to the security grid. Unfortunately, after a certain point, all their signs disappeared. It seems like both of them were together when they returned to the ship."

Leo wanted to facepalm himself at the revelation.

"My dear Timmy, just how bad is your luck? First you were kidnapped by the father, and now you're kidnapped by the son? You really have a special talent for being kidnapped."

He didn't say anything else to Blaze, and simply turned around. Although the answers weren't helpful, at least they did let him confirm that Kaelus was safe.

The bigger problem was the news that he had received from Viserl about the recent events in Sector 27, which was the space sector where Earth was also present.

Apparently, an entire planet blew up recently. And according to the few survivors, it happened because of a defect during the manufacturing process of a ship.

A reactor overheated, and blew up, which caused a chain reaction. And before they knew it, the entire planet was gone. There were only a few survivors of the catastrophe, who had managed to enter defence pods in time.

Even though it didn't seem to be related to the Ancient Seats, Viserl still informed him about these incidents just to say that there was no information at all.

"If I'm not wrong, that planet... It was the headquarters of Triton Industries. That name sounds a little too familiar... Don't tell me it was..."

Leo stepped out of the Recovery Center amidst the presence of even more reporters. The loud commotion outside came to a sudden half as pin drop silence returned.

Leo, still distracted, snapped his fingers and his figure disappeared.

Once again, he returned to the Necropolis Battleship. With a deep sigh, he took off his mask and tossed it back on a nearby seat.

He quickly brought his personal device from his pocket and checked the list of companies in which Alpha Corp had invested. And there it was... Triton Industries!

"Was it really a coincidence? My Hand of Misfortune can't be this strong, right?"

He sat on the chair, exhausted. Although he wanted the companies to lose money, he didn't want them to be completely destroyed. There was even a loss of the life of innocents.

"Hand of Misfortune... Is this really that dangerous?" Leo mumbled while taking off his gloves. "It did say that a random level of misfortune is applied at each investment. Just how high was the multiplier for Triton?"

He covered his face in his palm, as a strong guilt started rising within his heart. It was fine if it was a coincidence, but if it wasn't... He had just killed thousands if not millions.

Was this the result of his greed? He was starting to feel so bad that at this moment, he even wondered if he should stop everything.

How many lives would be lost in his conquest for wealth at this rate? He already had a few millions in his personal credits.

He could simply retire and live a decently mediocre life. Even though it wouldn't be a life of luxury, he wouldn't get blood on his hand.

"Arghhhh!" He looked above, and screamed at the top of his lungs. Unfortunately, there was no one here to hear his screams. He was all alone in this battleship.

He had the Sword of Voldred, and even the powerful Battleship of Necropolis. Yet, he didn't feel good.

He had killed before. He took the lives of cannibals that attacked him, simply to get accustomed to his swords. But it was the first time that he felt something like this.

For a moment, he even thought about grabbing Voldred's Sword to let it suppress his emotions.

For a long time, there was only silence in the ship, as a young man was seen sitting on a throne in a dimly lit environment.

After what felt like an eternity, the young man finally moved. He took off his robe, and even the gauntlets that granted him protection.

....

[Hours later...]

It was raining heavily... Leo was standing under the rain in drenched clothes as he knocked on the door before him.

The door opened after a few minutes, revealing a middle aged man who was holding a box in his hand.

"Are you the person who contacted me?" he asked Leo, whose face was looking at the box instead of looking at him.

He slowly nodded, and within the next second, a small noise resounded to the old man's phone.

"T-this is really One Million Credits! To think that you were really serious!" The man was smiling from ear to ear as he handed the cardboard box to Leo. "Do you want an umbrella?"

"I am fine." Leo didn't stay behind. He simply turned and walked away in the heavy rain.

"What a weird man. To think that I would be able to sell that thing for a million. What a profit..."

The middle aged man stepped back and returned to the room. He didn't see Leo's figure disappear in the distance.

Leo returned to the ship, water dripping from his clothes. He placed the small box on the table, and opened it.

"Welcome home…"
