Chapter 453: Chapter 453: Sent Flying with One Slap
Aaron Cheney held up the envelope emblazoned with "Veridia University" for everyone to see. "Look, everyone! She tore up Vera Xavier’s acceptance letter and still won’t admit it!"
Given Cara Preston’s recent track record, and now seeing the shredded Veridia University letter, no one believed a word she said. Instead, they hurled even uglier accusations at her.
Cara Preston was stomping her feet in fury. It finally dawned on her—this was all a setup orchestrated by Vera Xavier. She roared, "You’re all in this together, ganging up on me!"
With no other way to vent her overwhelming fury, she lunged at Vera Xavier, her fingernails aimed at her face like claws.
But Vera Xavier was ready. She immediately leaped a good distance to the side and pointed an aggrieved finger at Cara Preston. "You tore up my acceptance letter, and now you’re attacking me!"
This immediately sparked the crowd’s fury, and people surged forward to restrain Cara Preston.
Just then, a sharp slap struck Cara Preston across the face. She whipped her head around to see Grandma’s enraged expression. "Cara Preston, after what you did to Zachary, you had the gall to shamelessly impose on the Preston Family. We were kind enough to take you in, and now you dare try to harm Vera! I’ll beat you senseless today!"
Grandma had gone to the market with Vera early that morning. On the way, they happened to run into Juliana Taylor, who told them that Vera’s acceptance letter from Veridia University had arrived and that she should go pick it up.
Grandma was overjoyed at the news and immediately sent Vera to the school to get the letter while she went on to the market by herself.
Grandma figured Vera’s acceptance into Veridia University called for a big celebration, so she bought both chicken and fish at the market. Some people there even recognized her as Vera’s grandmother and pulled her aside to lavish Vera with praise. The chatting went on for so long that she was only just now getting back.
On her way back, she saw a crowd gathered by the side of the road. She hadn’t intended to rubberneck, but then she heard Vera’s voice and immediately rushed over.
When she heard that Cara had torn up Vera’s acceptance letter, fury boiled up inside her, and she lashed out immediately.
Though Grandma was getting on in years, she had done farm work her whole life in the countryside and was incredibly strong. The force of her slap was nearly enough to knock Cara Preston unconscious.
Framed by Vera Xavier and then slapped, Cara Preston was a mess of devastation and resentment.
’That old crone actually hit me!’
She snarled through gritted teeth, "What do you mean, you were kind enough to take me in? I’ve been living a life worse than a dog’s in the Preston household!"
Grandma’s fury intensified. She pointed at Cara Preston and unleashed a torrent of abuse. "What do you mean, a life worse than a dog’s? Before Zachary fell ill, Rona Langdon spoiled you rotten! All the best things in this house were saved for you. Whether it was food or clothing, you always got the best of everything!"
"After Zachary got sick, you did nothing but laze around all day! At my age, I have to take care of Zachary *and* wait on you hand and foot. Cara Preston, you tell me right now, how exactly has the Preston Family abused you? In what way have we wronged you?"
"I just can’t wrap my head around it. After how our family has treated you, why would you try to harm us like this! Cara Preston, you’re going to make things crystal clear today! The Preston Family will not be saddled with the accusation of abusing you!"
Cara Preston froze for a moment. She thought back on her recent days in the Preston household. Aside from never giving her a pleasant look, Grandma hadn’t actually treated her harshly. It was just that she had always been accustomed to the good life, so even these living conditions felt like abuse to her.
