Chapter 1085: Chapter 1085: Zhang Family
The pale woman and the frightened little girl hurriedly stepped out of the carriage cabin. The moment their tear-filled eyes spotted the middle-aged man standing completely safe and unharmed nearby, overwhelming relief flooded their pale faces, and they immediately sprinted toward him without care.
"Husband!"
"Daddy!"
The little girl ran forward so eagerly that her small foot caught on a hidden rock in the dark, causing her to lose her balance and almost stumble face-first onto the rough ground. Fortunately, the middle-aged man reacted with lightning-fast instincts, dropping down slightly and catching her safely in his strong arms before she could fall.
"Be careful, little one." The middle-aged man gently steadied the small girl, holding her close to his chest with a warm sigh.
"I know, I know!" The little girl giggled happily through her tears before wrapping her tiny arms tightly around his neck. "But I know I will always be safe because Daddy will always protect me no matter what!"
"You and your sweet, clever tongue." The middle-aged man could not help chuckling softly, his heart melting as he affectionately patted her head.
The young woman finally reached them a second later, her hands trembling as she immediately began inspecting her husband from head to toe with deeply worried, frantic eyes.
"Husband, are you sure you are not injured anywhere? Are you hurt?" The woman asked anxiously, her voice shaking as she checked his arms and armour for wounds.
The middle-aged man smiled softly and reassuringly, gently placing a hand over hers to stop her frantic search while shaking his head.
"No... No, my dear... I am completely fine. I am not injured at all." The middle-aged man stated.
Only after hearing his firm, clear answer did the woman finally exhale a long, deep sigh of relief, the heavy weight lifting off her shoulders. The middle-aged man then turned his body slightly, gesturing respectfully toward Bai Xifeng, who was standing a short distance away.
"It was actually this young lady who single-handedly saved all of our lives tonight." The middle-aged man’s voice rang out, heavy with profound, genuine gratitude. "She was the one who stepped in and effortlessly defeated those ruthless attackers when we were at our limit."
The woman and the little girl immediately turned their gazes to look directly at Bai Xifeng. The woman’s eyes widened in genuine shock and utter surprise. She had fully expected her husband’s saviour to be an experienced, hardened elder or a famous master cultivator. She had never, even in her wildest thoughts, expected the mysterious hero who had rescued her husband and their entire guard force to be such a remarkably young girl!
Looking at her, she seemed no older than fifteen or sixteen years old at most. Yet, she had effortlessly and single-handedly wiped out a bloodthirsty, heavily armed group of attackers that had nearly massacred their entire guard detail.
Beside her, the little girl also stared at Bai Xifeng with wide, sparkling eyes full of unhidden awe. Her small face was filled with pure, innocent admiration, looking at Bai Xifeng as though she had just witnessed a legendary fairy hero descend straight down from the heavens to save her family!
"Big Sister, thank you so much for saving us!" The little girl smiled brightly, bowing her small head politely to express her heartfelt gratitude.
Bai Xifeng smiled gently at the adorable sight. She casually crouched down on one knee to match the little girl’s height and softly, affectionately patted her head.
"You know, you actually helped out a lot tonight too." Bai Xifeng said warmly, her eyes twinkling with kindness. "You helped save your father and everyone else here."
"I did?" The little girl blinked her big, round eyes in pure surprise, pointing a tiny finger at herself.
"Yes, absolutely." Bai Xifeng nodded firmly. "You listened to your mother and stayed super quietly inside the carriage cabin without making a single sound or trying to look outside. Because of that, your father and the brave guards were able to fight off those bad people with all their strength without having to constantly worry about protecting you at the same time."
"Oh... I see now!" The little girl’s eyes immediately lit up with realisation and excitement. She quickly turned her head toward her smiling parents, her face beaming with pure, innocent joy. "Daddy! Mommy! Did you hear what Big Sister said? I helped Daddy fight off the bad people too!"
Both the man and the woman smiled lovingly down at their precious daughter before leaning over to gently pat her head.
"That’s right, my sweet girl." Zhang Zhenyu chuckled softly, his eyes filled with warmth. "Our Lingling was very, very brave tonight."
"You did a truly wonderful job, Lingling." Ma Ruoxi smiled proudly, her voice gentle as she smoothed down her daughter’s hair.
The little girl proudly puffed out her tiny chest after receiving the warm praise from both of her beloved parents, grinning from ear to ear.
"Young Lady, my name is Zhang Zhenyu." The middle-aged man formally introduced himself, bowing politely. "This is my wife, Ma Ruoxi, and this is our daughter, Zhang Lingling. I am a travelling merchant from Dongxi City. We were travelling back to our city after finishing some business when we unexpectedly ran into this group of ambushers, whom we initially assumed were bandits."
Bai Xifeng glanced over at the scattered corpses lying across the blood-stained grass before shifting her calm gaze back to Zhang Zhenyu.
"My name is Bai Xifeng." Bai Xifeng nodded politely in return before adding thoughtfully, "By the way, I don’t actually think they were a random group of mountain bandits at all."
"What?" Zhang Zhenyu was visibly surprised by her sudden statement, his eyebrows furrowing.
