Chapter 1091: Chapter 1091: Another Assassin’s Attack
Unfortunately, they were just a fraction of a second too late. One of the lead horses failed to halt its momentum in time and stepped directly onto the concealed, leaf-covered trap!
Snap!
The vicious, heavy steel mechanism instantly activated with a sickening crunch. The horse let out a loud, pained neigh as its foreleg was brutally caught in the sharp iron jaws. The second horse, horrified by the sudden violence and the thrashing of its partner, instantly panicked. It reared high onto its hind legs, whinnying frantically as it wildly struggled to break free from the wooden carriage harness!
Before the driver could lose control, Bai Xifeng’s figure flashed forward like a beam of light without the slightest hesitation! With one swift, breathtaking movement, she drew her glowing sword and cleanly slashed through the heavy leather reins connecting the panicked horse to the carriage.
Slash!
The thick ropes were severed instantly in a single, smooth stroke. Freed from the heavy carriage, the terrified horse bolted straight into the thick underbrush, disappearing deep into the dense forest.
Bai Xifeng quietly watched it vanish into the trees, but made no attempt whatsoever to chase after it. It had been an immediate, necessary decision.
If that crazed, frightened horse had continued violently thrashing and dragging the wooden vehicle, it could have easily overturned the carriage completely, shattering the cabin and severely injuring Zhang Zhenyu’s family inside. While the trapped horse was already immobilised, the carriage itself remained entirely upright and safe.
However, the exact moment the horses ceased moving...
Rustle! Rustle! Rustle!
Dozens of dark figures dressed entirely in sleek, pitch-black assassin garb suddenly leapt out from the surrounding treetops and thick forest, landing heavily around the group from every conceivable direction. Within only a few brief heartbeats, they had completely surrounded the entire perimeter. It was clearly a meticulously calculated, lethal ambush.
Inside the cabin, Zhang Zhenyu had just pushed open the small window and poked his head outside to see what the commotion was about. The instant his eyes took in the sea of armed, black-clothed men surrounding their party, all the colour immediately drained from his face, turning him ghost-white. His heart sank like a heavy stone to the bottom of an ocean. He was absolutely, 100% certain that these dangerous people were the second, far deadlier wave of hired killers sent specifically for him and his family!
"Wow..." Ning Shoukai casually looked around the massive circle of assassins, resting his hands behind his head before flashing a broad grin. "There are quite a lot of them this time, huh?"
His tone was unbelievably nonchalant, completely devoid of even the slightest trace of fear or anxiety. Hearing those flippant words, Zhang Zhenyu was rendered utterly speechless, his mouth hanging open. Does this young man... not feel even an ounce of terror right now?! There were literally dozens of cold-blooded, high-tier assassins surrounding them with drawn, poison-coated blades! Yet he sounded as though he were merely commenting on a light drizzle!
"Hey, Shoukai..." Xie Jingguo asked with a competitive, eager grin on his face, "Are you scared?"
"Scared?" Ning Shoukai snorted loudly and proudly, tossing his hair back. "Not a chance in hell. I was actually getting bored!"
As the teenagers bantered, one of the black-clothed men stepped forward from the surrounding crowd. Judging by the disciplined, respectful manner in which the other assassins instinctively positioned themselves half a step behind him, it was glaringly obvious he was their ruthless commander.
"Our only target is the family sitting inside that wooden carriage." The leader declared in a bone-chilling tone, his sharp, dark eyes sweeping over Bai Xifeng and the rest of the young students. "If you foolish brat kids don’t want to die a painful death, stay out of this private matter and run along."
"Oh..." Xie Lanying calmly dismounted from the broad back of her contracted White Tiger, Xue-er, stretching her arms casually. She said with a faint, dangerous smile. "I am truly sorry to burst your bubble, but we happen to be the ones escorting them today."
She slowly, deliberately drew her gleaming weapon from its sheath, the blade humming with sharp spiritual energy.
"So if you want to touch even a single hair on their heads... You are going to have to get past every single one of us first." Xie Lanying added with narrowed eyes.
One after another, without a single moment of hesitation, everyone else also dismounted from their formidable contracted beasts. Without needing a single word of discussion or planning, they instinctively formed a tight, impenetrable protective circle around Zhang Zhenyu’s carriage, standing shoulder to shoulder between the innocent family and the deadly horde of assassins.
Seeing a random group of young teenagers actually daring to stand up and openly oppose a high-tier assassination squad, the leader was stunned into silence for a brief second. Then, he burst into a loud, mocking, hysterical laugh that echoed ominously through the woods!
"Hahaha! Outstanding! In all my years, I have never seen a bunch of foolish, ignorant children so eager to throw away their young lives!" His dark eyes gradually filled with intense, murderous bloodlust as he unsheathed his main blade. "Since all of you are so desperate to be buried together... We will gladly grant your foolish wish!"
He suddenly raised his heavy arm high into the air.
"Kill them all! Leave no one alive! Attack!" The leader roared!
The black-clothed assassins immediately rushed forward from every direction, their lethal killing intent erupting without the slightest hesitation.
"Formation!" Xie Lanying’s clear voice commanded over the din.
Without needing a single word of prior discussion, everyone instinctively moved into their well-practised battle positions. The Zhang Family’s carriage remained securely protected at the absolute centre of the ring.
