She did not make the slightest effort to lower her voice either.

Wanlu, reeling from the sudden blow, stood completely stunned, her hand clutching her reddened cheek. She stared at Hanlu with a confused, questioning look, utterly unable to comprehend why the senior maid had suddenly turned on her and struck her in public.

Hanlu, however, paid no attention to Wanlu’s bewildered expression. Instead, she stepped past her and dropped into a deep, humble bow directly before Bai Xifeng.

"Young Lady Bai, please forgive this foolish maidservant’s utter insolence! She is a recent addition to our ranks and failed to recognise Young Lady Bai’s esteemed presence." Hanlu pleaded, keeping her head lowered with absolute reverence as she apologised on her companion’s behalf.

Watching this shocking display from behind, Wanlu was thoroughly shaken to her core. She had never anticipated seeing a veteran, high-ranking maid like Hanlu, someone who had served as a Noble Consort’s trusted confidante for many years, treat an outsider from beyond the palace walls with such profound deference.

In truth, Hanlu’s attitude toward Bai Xifeng was far more respectful and cautious than how she typically greeted the high-born noble ladies who regularly visited the imperial court!

"I see... I understand." Bai Xifeng nodded passively.

She did not seem particularly interested in dragging out the altercation or causing a scene over a foolish servant. She just wanted to go out of the palace and stroll the city.
