Chapter 637: The Letter
"They’ve discovered that there’s someone missing.
"We better leave right now." Lee He Song said to Lao Er and Ling Er once he got back down.
Lao Er and Ling Er nodded their heads and they quickly headed in the opposite direction from where the encampment area of the cultivators from the north was.
Lee He Song led them to a path where he had come from.
And it took them around two Ke worth of time to reach the official road.
Once they were on the official road, Lee He Song took out pieces of paper he had with him and he started drawing out what he had seen earlier.
When he was done with a piece of paper, he continued with the next one, until there were three copies.
He kept one of the copies and handed the other two copies over to Lao Er and Ling Er.
"Here, keep these.
"I will try and bring you back to Gui Feng City to inform the Governor of what’s happening first, and after that I will head back to Hong Feng City." Lee He Song said and both of them kept the paper with them.
"Thanks so much, Master Lee." They cupped their hands at him and said.
Even though they had many things to talk about with Lee He Song, mainly things about Grand Ancestor Lin, they understood that time was not on their side.
"Hold on tight." Lee He Song picked them up and he flew into the air the next moment.
He could only fly for a short distance with his cultivation level at Foundation Establishment Level, and he had to stop before flying again.
But it was much faster if Lao Er and Ling Er traveled on foot.
And with this sporadic way of traveling, they finally reached Gui Feng City.
Lao Er and Ling Er had never felt so happy as they were to see the tall walls of Gui Feng again.
"Go and do what you must." Lee He Song dropped them off and he used the invisibility talisman before making his way back to Hong Feng City.
...
Meanwhile in one of the tents that was the largest and most lavish among the others, a man, the Crimson Wolf Lord, was dressed in red fur and sat on a chair that was made of huge bones from some demonic beasts.
He had his head tilted to the side, with his cheek resting on his fist.
One of his men knelt in front of him with his body shivering uncontrollably.
And on the sides, two rows of men stood with a wine flagon and roasted meat in their hands.
They glanced at the man that was kneeling with glee, happy to be able to witness some fun.
Waiting out here had made them bored and rowdy.
"Say that again." The Crimson Wolf Lord finally spoke and the man that knelt in front of him shivered even more.
"My honorable brave Crimson Wolf Lord, two men were missing from their sentry points and when we tried to find them they were nowhere in sight.
"We could only discover the body of a pet wolf discarded deep within the bushes." The man said and lowered his head.
The Crimson Wolf Lord sat up straight and his eyes swept across the tent.
It made those who were standing on the sides shudder and some even took a step back.
"How many times have I told all of you to keep your men at bay?
"This small wait would guarantee us a huge payoff when we plunder and ransack Gui Feng City and the mines nearby.
"Is it such a huge ask from all of you?" He said and his cold stare felt like it could kill by itself.
"I... I tried but they are brave men of the plains... they..." The man who was kneeling down said but even before he could finish his sentence, he felt an oppressive aura descending upon him.
His body stuck to the ground and the aura didn’t stop even when the sounds of bones cracking could be heard.
Blood flowed out from the wounds of the man and within a few moments, the man’s heart stopped beating.
The Crimson Wolf Lord turned to an elder that was sitting to his side and said, "Put his family into slavery and strip off all of his properties."
The elder nodded his head at him.
Then, he turned his focus back to the other men standing by the side.
"Let this be a lesson for you.
"This is what you get for not taking my orders seriously."
"Yes, honorable brave Crimson Wolf Lord." The men replied in unison and they placed their fist onto their left shoulder and bowed at him.
One of them stepped forward and asked, "What should we do now?"
The Crimson Wolf Lord pondered for a moment.
He would have to be covert about it.
Knowing how they were, if he let too many of his men out, they might go on a rampage, draw too much attention to themselves and spoil his plan.
"Send a small team to track and capture those who were responsible." The Crimson Wolf Lord said and his men were disappointed with it.
They had expected to be able to go out for a ’breather’ but it wasn’t to be.
But it was orders and they didn’t want to end up like the man that was flattened on the ground in front of them.
"Yes, honorable brave Crimson Wolf Lord." They said and bowed at the Crimson Wolf Lord again.
...
While this was going on, a messenger arrived at the Governor’s Residence in Hong Feng City at the same time.
The messenger passed the letter to the Governor and said, "Governor, this is from Duke of Mu, his highness Qian Shi."
The Governor didn’t say a word and received the letter with his usual expressionless face.
He took out the letter, read it and put it down again.
It was a letter from Qian Shi telling him that his edict was rejected by the emperor and he was not to do anything else until Qian Shi arrived in Hong Feng City.
