Chapter 695: Qingxuan Can Measure The Heavens
There were countless mirrors in the world. But only the Tianxuan Mirror could make Li Fan this solemn.
The square mirror in Huangfu Song's hand wasn't quite the same as the Tianxuan Mirror Li Fan had seen before, but a familiar aura radiated from its frame. Li Fan felt almost certain the two were linked.
Sure enough, Huangfu Song's voice carried a note of nervousness. "Brother Dongfang, watch your words. Don't be fooled by this unassuming little mirror. Nearly all of the Myriad Immortals Alliance's most outstanding array masters had a hand in forging it.
"This is the Heaven-Measuring Mirror."
Li Fan's eyes flickered. Dongfang Yao only looked more confused.
"Don't leave me hanging," he said impatiently. "Explain already."
Huangfu Song took no offense. He stroked the Heaven-Measuring Mirror and said, with some emotion, "Even if I explained in detail, you wouldn't understand. Just know this: it's a supreme treasure, built around an array core and smelted from the Qingxuan Mirror itself.
"Think of it as a portable secondary Tianxuan Mirror. And the important part is that whoever holds it gets nearly full control permissions."
Dongfang Yao's eyes went wide. "A secondary Tianxuan Mirror? Now that's a real treasure! Let me try it!"
He reached out and grabbed for the mirror in Huangfu Song's hand.
His fingers passed straight through it, like trying to scoop water with a bamboo basket. He came away with nothing.
"An illusion?" Dongfang Yao stared, stunned.
"Heh." Huangfu Song tossed the mirror in his palm, pride plain on his face. "A treasure like this belongs only to the deserving. Without the Alliance's permission, someone lucky enough to get their hands on it couldn't so much as touch it."
Li Fan, who had watched the whole exchange in silence, finally spoke. "Brother Huangfu, borrowing such a treasure must have cost you dearly. But what good does the Heaven-Measuring Mirror do us in the White Mist?" He frowned at Huangfu Song.
Huangfu Song dropped the coy act. "The Heaven-Measuring Mirror does exactly what its name suggests. It measures heaven and earth. In the vast White Mist, even a cultivator's divine sense can't reach far. Normally you'd have to stumble forward and trust in luck. But with this..."
He smiled. "Everything within a hundred zhang is revealed in perfect detail, White Mist or no White Mist.
"Pity, though. I spent every merit point I've accumulated over the years just to borrow this low-grade one from Dean Ji. A high-grade Heaven-Measuring Mirror could survey ten thousand li in an instant." He sighed, clearly still stinging from the cost.
"A hundred zhang is already impressive," Li Fan said. "With a tool like this, our expedition into the White Mist should go twice as well for half the effort."
"The Heaven-Measuring Mirror and the Tianxuan Mirror are different forms of the same entity," Huangfu Song added. "So we don't need to save up our discoveries and report back later. The moment the mirror records an area, our contributions get tallied in real time."
"Really?" Dongfang Yao lit up. "Here I was worried about having to run back and forth. This is perfect. Now I can just charge straight into the White Mist.
"Truth is, I've got no money or influence like you two. Just these two hands and a willingness to work." He slapped his chest. "Any fighting that needs doing, leave it to me. You two can sit back and watch."
Li Fan shook his head. "Brother Dongfang, you're too modest. If not for you, I never would have had the fortune to meet Brother Huangfu. Getting ahead of the other cultivators to explore the White Mist is half your doing."
Dongfang Yao's face flushed with pride at that.
The three of them put their heads together, confirmed the plan, and set out at once.
"Ordinary stretches of the White Mist reward you with only a few contribution points at best," Huangfu Song said. "If you want a real payoff, you need to find an undiscovered Lost Domain.
"Even with the Heaven-Measuring Mirror guiding us, the Mist is too vast. Searching blind would be like fishing a needle out of the ocean. But I once heard Dean Ji say that Lost Domains tend to drift toward and fuse with one another. So there's a good chance we'll find something near a known Lost Domain. As it happens, I know of one called the Wandering Words, inside the White Mist Barrier of Tianyu Province. It’s worth trying our luck there."
"Wandering Words? What's that supposed to be?" Dongfang Yao scratched his head, curious.
"Among the charted Lost Domains, it's said to rank low on the danger scale," Huangfu Song explained. "But the words there can't be pinned down by any method. They float through the sky of that domain like living things. It’s quite a sight."
Li Fan nodded in agreement. Dongfang Yao raised no objection either.
Following Huangfu Song's directions, the three of them steered the Samantabhadra True Boat into the White Mist Barrier.
The moment they entered the vast white fog, Huangfu Song tossed the Heaven-Measuring Mirror into the air above them.
A faint green light spread outward from the mirror, forming a circle a hundred zhang in radius around the Samantabhadra True Boat.
The green light washed over Li Fan, and he squinted. After a careful check, he found no strange effects on his body and relaxed.
"Bad luck. Someone's already been through here," Huangfu Song said, shaking his head.
"We've only just entered the White Mist. It'd be strange if no one had beaten us to it," Li Fan replied. His attention had already turned inward, where a vast map took shape in his mind.
Most of the map was empty white, but a scatter of small dots and thin lines had already begun eating into the blank expanse.
Zooming in, he found a single black dot marking their current position.
Around it spread a dark, blue-black zone, a stark contrast to the endless white beyond.
So explored areas get marked, but you can't tell what's actually inside them.
Li Fan wasn't surprised.
The Myriad Immortals Alliance clearly had reasons for how it managed the exploration of the White Mist. The data gathered from inside was top secret. Why would they hand it over to mere scouts?
Huangfu Song piloted the Samantabhadra True Boat toward the Wandering Words Lost Domain, skirting the blue-black zones already marked on the map and picking up contribution points along the way.
The endless White Mist stretched around them like a boundless ocean.
Nothing broke the fog for the rest of the journey.
Li Fan checked his contribution points through the Heaven-Measuring Mirror. They trickled in slowly.
After three or four days, he'd barely scraped together two hundred.
For an ordinary cultivator, that's not a bad rate. For me, it's practically useless.
No wonder Shuo Feng thought so little of it.
Besides contribution points, there was a second currency called Qingxuan Points, used for redeeming special resources. But Li Fan's balance stood at zero, so he had no way to check the catalog.
