Chapter 295: Chapter 295: "There’s a Body at the Bottom of the Lake.
The night was deep, and moonlight spilled across the lake’s surface, casting a cold, eerie glow.
The man with glasses stood on the shore, watching the spot where the suitcase had sunk. The corner of his mouth slowly twisted into a chilling smirk, like a venomous snake flicking its tongue.
His lips moved as he murmured, "Una, rest in peace."
With those words, he turned and left.
Kohl and its companion were frantic, diving into the lake at once.
They circled the suitcase at the bottom of the lake, anxious and helpless.
Kohl and its companion tried to wrap their tails around the suitcase, but they were too weak to move the heavy case at all.
The two snakes exhausted themselves until their bodies twitched, only reluctantly flicking their tails and leaving.
After hearing Kohl’s story, Renee’s lowered lashes trembled. A solemn expression clouded her fair face, and her nails dug uncontrollably into her palms.
Although Michelle Fuller didn’t know what Kohl had said, she could guess the gravity of the situation just by looking at her friend’s face.
The last time Evan Shepherd’s death was discovered, she had seen this exact expression on Renee Jennings’s face.
’So it’s another murder?’
Renee Jennings turned her head to look at the calm, deep lake under the night sky and took a deep breath.
"Renee, are you okay?" Michelle Fuller asked, looking at her worriedly.
Renee Jennings pressed her lips together, leaned close to her ear, and whispered, "There’s a body at the bottom of the lake."
Upon hearing this, Michelle Fuller’s pupils contracted. Her eyes widened in disbelief. "Oh my God..."
She covered her mouth, suddenly losing her appetite for the barbecue in front of them.
"Then... then what should we do now?" she asked, her voice trembling.
Renee Jennings frowned. "I don’t know either. I’ll contact Henry Stark first."
"Okay," Michelle Fuller nodded hastily.
"I need to find a place to make a call. Will you be okay here by yourself?" Renee Jennings asked.
Michelle Fuller shook her head like a rattle. "No way. I’m going with you."
"Let’s go then." Renee Jennings took her hand, and they stood up to leave.
The man with glasses caught sight of Renee Jennings’s retreating figure and asked his girlfriend, "Eve, did that woman just add you on WeChat?"
"Yes," Eve nodded. She still looked pale and felt a bit uneasy. "Wayne, why don’t we just leave? I’ve lost my appetite."
"You can’t eat anymore?" The man with glasses turned his gaze back to her.
"Yeah, I don’t feel like eating," Eve replied.
The man with glasses glanced at the large table of barbecue, thinking it was a bit of a waste. "I’ll call a car for you to go back then."
"What do you mean? You’re not leaving?" Eve stared at him, stunned.
"I’ll leave later." The man with glasses pointed at the food on the table. "You ordered so much. It’d be too wasteful not to eat it. I’ll finish it and then go."
Eve frowned. Suddenly, she found him to be a major turn-off.
’When we just ran into that snake, he ran faster than anyone. And now he’s making me go home alone just so he can eat barbecue?’
Eve’s face fell. Without another word, she grabbed her purse and walked off.
Seeing this, the man with glasses shouted at her retreating back, "You don’t need me to call a car?"
Eve ignored him and left without a backward glance.
"What a rotten temper." A flash of dissatisfaction crossed the man’s eyes, but he couldn’t be bothered to placate her.
He looked at the table full of barely touched barbecue, hesitated for a few seconds, then picked up his phone, switched WeChat accounts, and invited another girl to come eat.
When Renee Jennings and Michelle Fuller returned from their phone call, they saw that the man with glasses was now alone.
’That girl, Eve, left?’
Renee Jennings returned to her seat and sent the girl she had just added as a friend a WeChat message: "Eve, did you leave?"
Eve replied quickly: "Yeah, I lost my appetite."
Renee Jennings: "Your boyfriend didn’t go with you?"
Eve: "He... might not be my boyfriend for much longer."
When Renee Jennings saw this message, the tension in her face finally eased a little, and a faint smile touched her lips.
Renee Jennings: "Wise choice."
Sitting in a taxi, Eve frowned in confusion when she saw Renee Jennings’s reply.
Eve: "Why do you say that? Do you know Linus Hollis?"
Renee Jennings: "Not really. I’ll explain later."
Although Eve was very curious, she didn’t press the matter, only replying with a simple "Okay."
Renee Jennings put down her phone, turned to Kohl beside her, and asked with a smile, "Want some meat?"
"Of course," Kohl didn’t stand on ceremony. "This meat smells so good, I’ve been dying to try some."
Renee Jennings used scissors to cut the meat into small pieces for him to eat.
"How considerate!" Kohl exclaimed in admiration. He took a bite of beef and said blissfully, "This is the first time I’ve ever eaten such delicious meat!"
A short while later, a woman who had come for barbecue passed by Renee Jennings’s tent. Seeing a snake inside, her expression changed, and she immediately called a server over.
"Do you allow people to bring snakes to a barbecue?" the woman with the big, permed waves said, her face full of displeasure. "This is too dangerous! What if that snake comes over to our side and bites someone? Can your restaurant afford to take responsibility for that?"
"I’m very sorry," the server apologized hastily, explaining, "That snake wasn’t brought here by the customer."
"If she didn’t bring it, then why is it in her tent?" the woman frowned, displeased. "Get her to leave, or I’m not eating here."
The woman’s voice was shrill and loud enough for many people to hear, and Renee Jennings and Michelle Fuller were, naturally, no exception.
"Then don’t eat. So what?" Michelle Fuller said with disdain. "Who does she think she is?"
Kohl complained as well, "I hate these show-off bipeds the most!"
"Exactly, exactly," Renee Jennings agreed, her head down as she typed on WeChat.
Just then, a figure appeared beside the woman. "Mindy, what’s wrong?"
"Isn’t that the boyfriend of the girl from before?" Michelle Fuller whispered in Renee Jennings’s ear in astonishment.
Hearing this, Renee Jennings looked up and sneered, "So it is."
Linus Hollis walked to Mindy’s side and said gently, "I’ve already ordered. Let’s go eat."
"Wayne Lynn," Mindy’s haughty attitude from when she was facing the server vanished, replaced by a soft, coquettish tone. "Someone brought a snake over there. I’m scared!"
Linus Hollis pushed up his glasses. "Oh, really?"
"Yes," Mindy said, pointing toward Renee Jennings’s tent. "Look. Why don’t we eat somewhere else?"
"But I’ve already ordered," Linus Hollis said with a troubled expression. "That snake isn’t venomous. Don’t be afraid. Besides, our table is pretty far from them."
He followed Mindy’s finger and saw that it was the same snake that had scared Eve earlier.
’What bad luck.’
Mindy was not pleased. "Then have them cancel the order. It’s not our fault."
"They’ve already started bringing the food," Linus Hollis said helplessly. "Besides, everyone online says this barbecue place is amazing. Let’s just give it a try."
Mindy didn’t want to make a bad impression either, so she could only agree. "Fine, then."
As they walked, she asked, "Why didn’t you wait for me to get here before ordering?"
Linus Hollis smiled. "Because you’re too thin. I wanted you to be able to eat meat the moment you arrived."
"You’re so thoughtful." Mindy’s mood began to improve.
