Chapter 296: Chapter 296: A Member of the Public Reported You
Michelle Fuller watched the scene, her face a mask of disbelief. "He can just do that?"
Renee Jennings was also speechless. "Unbelievable."
His girlfriend had barely walked out the door before he called another woman over to eat the leftovers...
"This four-eyed, two-legged beast is one of a kind!" Kohl couldn’t help but marvel. "How does he know so many female two-legged beasts?"
The other guests who knew what was happening were also stunned.
What a player!
Linus Hollis adjusted his glasses and said with a smile, "Mindy, you won’t believe what happened. A girl just mistook me for someone else and sat right down across from me. I was completely baffled."
"Oh, really?" Mindy said with a laugh. "Maybe she didn’t get the wrong person. Maybe she did it on purpose to hit on you."
Linus Hollis immediately put on a flustered and shy expression. "You think so? I hadn’t even considered that."
"I’m sure of it," Mindy said confidently.
"You give me too much credit," Linus Hollis said as he grilled the meat. "I’m just an ordinary guy. Why would any girl want to hit on me?"
"I’m a woman. I know how women think," Mindy said proudly. "I definitely understand their subtle little games better than you do."
Linus Hollis laughed. "Mindy, I really enjoy talking with you. I think my appetite’s even improving."
As the two chatted away eagerly, Kohl was slithering up quietly behind Linus Hollis. Linus was holding a lettuce wrap filled with meat, offering it to Mindy across from him. "Open up."
Mindy opened her mouth, but instead let out a scream. "AHHH—"
"What’s wrong?" A nerve in Linus Hollis’s temple began to throb.
Eve had screamed just like that a moment ago.
The next second, he felt an itch on his neck as something slick and cold slithered across his skin.
Linus Hollis went stiff. He slowly turned his head and came face-to-face with Kohl’s vertical, black-gem-like pupils. A chill shot straight up his spine.
Kohl flicked his forked tongue and cursed viciously, "You shameless, four-eyed, two-legged beast! You’re the one who should be stuffed in a box and thrown to the bottom of the lake!"
After the initial shock, Linus Hollis remembered the snake wasn’t venomous. A wave of fury surged through him, and the veins on the back of his hand bulged.
He gritted his teeth in fury and reached for Kohl. But the snake’s black, satin-like body dodged nimbly before its head lunged forward, sinking its sharp fangs viciously into his arm.
Linus Hollis’s expression changed as a sharp pain shot through his arm.
Tasting the metallic sweetness of blood, Kohl swayed its long body in satisfaction and leisurely slithered away.
Mindy’s face was pale with fright. She asked, trembling, "Linus, are... are you okay? I told you that snake was dangerous."
Linus Hollis was drenched in sweat, panting heavily as he stared at the two rows of tiny, jagged teeth marks on his arm. A wave of belated fear washed over him.
’Good thing that snake wasn’t venomous,’ he thought. ’Otherwise, I’d be a goner.’
The people nearby saw what happened and started snickering and gossiping about Linus Hollis.
"This guy is such a player, even the snake couldn’t stand him."
"He totally deserved it!"
"It’s a shame that snake wasn’t venomous."
"..."
Kohl returned to Renee Jennings’s side and chuckled. "Snake bit him!"
Renee Jennings was about to say something, but her phone screen lit up and a shrill ringtone cut through the air.
Her eyes dropped to the caller ID, and she immediately answered. "Henry."
A man’s deep, magnetic voice came through the earpiece. "Renee, we’re at the barbecue campground. I’ve already spoken with the owner, and he’s not letting any new customers in."
"Good," Renee Jennings said in a low voice. "The suspect’s still here. He was just bitten by Kohl."
"What table are you at?" Henry asked.
Renee Jennings gave him the table number. Before she could hang up, she spotted Henry Stark, Zachary Conway, and Sawyer.
She raised her hand and waved. "Over here."
Renee Jennings put down her phone and stood up to grab an extra stool.
After Henry and the other two sat down, they didn’t discuss the case. Instead, they began to chat casually as if they were just friends getting together.
"I need to use the restroom. Renee, will you come with me?" Sawyer said, getting up.
"Okay." Renee Jennings stood up as well, linking her arm with Sawyer’s. As they walked in the direction of Linus Hollis’s table, she murmured, "The one with the glasses."
Sawyer understood and gave a slight nod.
Even after being bitten by Kohl, Linus Hollis was eating his barbecue as if nothing had happened.
’To murder someone and dump their body, then not only return to the scene of the crime the next day but also ask another girl out for barbecue... This man is terrifying.’
Renee Jennings and Sawyer returned to their table. After a quick discussion in their group chat, they decided it was time to move in on the suspect, Linus Hollis.
Henry Stark and Zachary Conway got up and walked toward the tent where Linus Hollis was sitting.
"Linus, are you sure your arm is okay?" Mindy said worriedly, looking at the two rows of teeth marks on his arm. "Maybe we should stop eating."
’It wasn’t that she was worried about Linus. She was afraid the snake would show up again and bite *her*.’
’Even if it wasn’t venomous, she had no desire to get bitten.’
"I’m fine," Linus Hollis said, placing a piece of grilled meat onto her plate. "Mindy, you’re too skinny. You need to eat more."
Mindy had completely lost her appetite. She was on pins and needles, nervously glancing around every few seconds, terrified that Kohl would suddenly appear at her side.
"Maybe..." She was just about to say she should get going when two tall, handsome men walked into their tent.
Mindy stared for a few seconds, then asked quizzically, "Linus, are these two your friends?"
Linus Hollis glanced over, frowning. "No, I don’t know them. Who are you looking for?"
"Are you Linus Hollis?" Henry Stark asked in a level voice.
Linus Hollis nodded, a look of confusion on his face. "Who are you? What do you want with me?"
Henry Stark and Zachary Conway simultaneously presented their credentials.
"Linus Hollis, we have a public tip that you disposed of a body here last night. Please come with us to the station for questioning," Henry Stark said, his voice cold.
"What?" Mindy cried out, her eyes widening in disbelief. "There must be some mistake!"
Linus Hollis’s expression faltered, a flicker of panic in his eyes, but he quickly recovered. He adjusted his glasses and said, "You must be mistaken. This is my first time here."
"That’s right," Mindy nodded emphatically. "How could Linus do something like that? He’s a kind person. He wouldn’t even kill a mosquito. How could he do something like that? He just wouldn’t."
Hearing this, Zachary Conway raised an eyebrow. "Were you with him last night?"
"Well, no," Mindy admitted, shaking her head.
Zachary Conway smiled. "Since you weren’t with him last night, how can you be sure he didn’t do it?"
Mindy opened her mouth but was at a loss for words.
"Linus Hollis," Zachary Conway’s tone grew sharp. "Let’s go."
Linus Hollis lowered his head, his eyes filled with a dark, resentful look.
’He was sure he’d checked that no one was around before opening the suitcase last night. Which bastard was hiding and watching?’
"Linus Hollis," Zachary Conway said, pulling out a pair of silver handcuffs. "Please cooperate."
