Roadmap to the Boundless Sky

Book 4 Chapter 93: Ambush

Book 4, Chapter 93: Ambush

It was 10:12 p.m. when Lead Investigator Wen arrived at the designated area.

The team got out of the train and headed to the exit of the tunnel.

Aside from his usual subordinates, Lead Investigator Wen had also brought some of the reinforcements from the other Central Cities.

Lead Investigator Wen had no intention of using these people as his main fighting force. Instead, he wanted them as backup.

Since they came from other Central Cities, it was impossible for them to fight at full power. Also, since the other Central Cities trusted them enough to send their martial artists over, they couldn’t just use these people as cannon fodder.

Once they were in position, another team came over to salute them. “Sir!”

Lead Investigator Wen saluted them back and asked, “Is everything ready?”

“Yes.”

Lead Investigator Wen looked around before touching his Realm Pass. The signal was smooth. He could connect with people in all positions, so he nodded in approval.

For the operation’s sake, he sent subordinates ahead of time to check the terrain and set up sentry spots. He even had them set up domain entities, domain interference entities, and a small number of simple but discreet fortifications.

Around eighteen minutes away from them was a fort. A lot of their explosives and replenishments came from there. In truth, if this tunnel weren’t under the municipal government’s control, the fort would have been even closer so that they could keep an eye over all the people coming and going into the tunnel at all times.

There was a thick woodland blocking their sight, so the fort had a hard time monitoring the place. The closest building was a simple checkpoint and maintenance area that had only one sentry tower stationed on high terrain.

Lead Investigator Wen cast a glance at the sentry tower. The people stationed there could observe the entire area, which made it a crucial spot. However, since it was quite far away, it was difficult for them to contact the guards up there through their Realm Passes. “Is everything ready there?”

“Yes. Lead Investigator Han has sent someone over, and we have too. They sent us a telegram as a reply ten minutes ago,” a teammate answered.

“Send another telegram to them,” Lead Investigator Wen ordered.

“Understood!”

A while later, the person came back with a report, “All is well, sir.”

“Check one more time right before the operation,” Lead Investigator Wen instructed, and that person recorded it.

Lead Investigator Wen then tapped his Realm Pass a few times. “Also, station a few cars at these spots. Make sure that they are in contact with us via telegram at all times. If they receive any emergency signals, they are to immediately retreat to the fort.”

“Understood!”

Once Lead Investigator Wen got everything set up, he went to meet up with Han Fu to confirm their setup.

Han Fu was in charge of blocking the rear, while Lead Investigator Wen had to ambush the Linacrox Union team from the side.

They had set up a number of mortars and machine guns to engage the Linacrox Union’s team in a prepared battlespace, which would give them an absolute advantage. As long as they could prevent the powerful martial artists from the Linacrox Union team from launching a counterattack, they would be fine.

The arrival of the strong martial artists from the Union was what they wanted. Then, Lead Investigator Wen and Han Fu would step forward to kill them. Once they got rid of these people, they wouldn’t have to worry about the rest.

After checking the area, Lead Investigator Wen split up with Han Fu to return to his position. He checked his watch. It was 11:22 p.m.. If the information was correct, the first Linacrox Union team was going to arrive in around ten minutes.

Just then, an armored car drove over along the road near the railway. Since they had locked down the area, some Resolution Department officers went forward to stop them, but someone in the car showed an ID, and they were forced to release them.

Upon hearing who was approaching them, Lead Investigator Wen was quite surprised. Then, he said to Han Fu, “There’s a situation. I need to take care of it.”

Han Fu saw the car too. “Be quick about it. They’re going to be here soon.”

Lead Investigator Wen gave him a sign that said not to worry and went to the armored car. Two men in top hats and black trench coats came out.

Once they were close, one of them showed his ID.

“We’re investigators from the National General Affairs Bureau, and we need you to cooperate with us for a case. Please come with us.”

The other investigator showed his “investigation order.”

That made Lead Investigator Wen even more suspicious. While the National General Affairs Bureau had the right to investigate and interrogate government officials, it did not apply to all ranked officers. Government officers at his rank would receive prior notice if they were about to be investigated. They shouldn’t be showing up like this and saying that they wanted him to leave with them.

But investigation orders were usually issued ad hoc, and even government officers at his rank had to cooperate.

“I have something important going on right now. Could you wait? Once I’m done, I’ll leave with you,” he said.

One of them shook his head and said sternly, “My apologies, Lead Investigator Wen. It’s not that we don’t want to give you any leeway, but what we’re investigating is related to your current mission. Otherwise, the higher-ups wouldn’t have sent us over so urgently. We’d like you to come with us right now. Please forgive us for this.”

Lead Investigator Wen frowned. Then, he looked back. A few minutes had passed during their brief conversation. If he stayed a little longer and the operation went smoothly, they would be able to destroy the first Linacrox Union team.

If he left, the operation would go up in smoke. He really didn’t want to go.

Just as he thought about negotiating for a little more time, Han Fu noticed his problem. He drove over and got out. “There’s less than three minutes left. My team has detected the Linacrox Union’s advance unit. We need to get ready.”

Then, he faced the two investigators. “They’re from the National General Affairs Bureau?”

Lead Investigator Wen nodded in resignation.

“Did you give prior notice to Lead Investigator Wen that you wanted to see him?” Han Fu asked.

The investigators ignored Han Fu and just stared at Lead Investigator Wen. One of them said, “Wen Xianchu, Director Wu would like you to cooperate.”

That caught Lead Investigator Wen off guard. Wu Quan was currently being interrogated. According to procedure, it was impossible for him to communicate with the outside world, much less give orders. Did he say this before he was brought for an interrogation?

Wen Xianchu was his old name. Only Wu Quan knew it. He didn’t know why Wu Quan did this, but as one of Wu Quan’s long-time subordinates, he wasn’t going to question it.

“Alright. I’ll go back with you,” he said.

He turned around and said apologetically to Han Fu, “Sorry, Lao Han. I need to leave with them. I’ll hand over my men to you. They’ll cooperate with you.”

Han Fu stared at the two investigators for a while. “Can I have a word with him?”

The two investigators exchanged glances but said nothing. It was as good as an answer.

Lead Investigator Wen went to the side with Han Fu and apologized to him. “I’m really sorry, Lao Han, but this is what Director Wu wants, and I can’t not listen to him.”

“I know. No one can ever predict surprises. Some things just won’t go according to plan, but that’s fine. There are ways to make up for it.”

Suddenly, Han Fu threw a punch at Lead Investigator Wen’s chest.

It was unbelievably quick, and since it was thrown at such a close distance, there was no way Lead Investigator Wen could avoid it.

Thud!

In such an impossible situation, Lead Investigator Wen managed to catch the punch, and a shockwave shot out from where their hands connected.

Their Heartborn Forces crashed into each other, but since Lead Investigator Wen wasn’t the one attacking, he suffered a greater loss.

His arm looked like it had been sliced up by countless knives. Long, thin wounds appeared on his skin, and a large hole was blasted open on his back. Even his shirt and overcoat was torn apart with a loud rip.

This was Han Fu’s main refined force: the Three Forms Force.

It had three variations. The first made it move like threads. It went straight to the heart to make it implode. The second could cut apart bone and flesh like thousands of knives. The third could bind an enemy. The practitioner could switch between the three variations at will.

Because of it, the enemy’s adaptability would be put to a real test when attempting to neutralize the refined force. If they made a wrong call and neutralized the wrong variation, the refined force would enter their body and destroy them. It could be said to be an incredibly difficult refined force to fend against, especially when it was released abruptly. It made it incredibly dangerous.

But when Lead Investigator Wen blocked it, not only was he able to accurately deduce the variation Han Fu used, but also guide that refined force to the skin on his back so that it didn’t stay in his body.

Hence, while he looked quite the pitiful sight, he wasn’t actually badly hurt.

When their Heartborn Forces clashed, Han Fu was also attacked by Lead Investigator Wen’s refined force and forced back. This made him unable to deliver a subsequent attack. He turned to Lead Investigator Wen. “The Air Lock Force?”

This refined force was great at restraining the opponent’s refined force. Once the opponent was hit by the Heartborn Force version, they would turn numb and would have slower reaction time, speed, and less strength as long as the Heartborn Force remained in them.

They had been colleagues for three years, but he had never learned what Lead Investigator Wen’s refined force was. That was why he was affected by it. However, since Lead Investigator Wen had activated his Heartborn Force too quickly, it didn’t affect Han Fu too much. In an instant, he managed to neutralize it. With a tap on the ground, he charged at Lead Investigator Wen.

The National General Affairs Bureau investigators noticed the situation and reacted quickly. They drew their guns, but the moment they raised them, gunshots came from Han Fu’s car.

There were only two shots, but they blasted the two investigators’ heads apart.

Lead Investigator Wen narrowed his eyes. He heard rustling in his ears. This was a sign that a domain entity was interfering with communications.

He didn’t ask why Han Fu did this, because from the moment he attacked, the answer was no longer important.

When he tried to regain his footing to deal with Han Fu’s next attack, someone rushed over from Han Fu’s limousine and reached his side almost in an instant. At the same time, a powerful, oppressive aura came crashing into him.
