Chapter 2061: Extra Story 43: On Friendship

After several days apart, when Master Gui saw Wufu again, his feelings were complicated, but even more than that, he felt relieved—especially when he saw her standing there with all her limbs intact; that heart that had nowhere to rest suddenly settled firmly into place.

Thud.

Master Gui knelt down and knocked his head to the ground. As soon as he knelt, those behind him all dropped to their knees as well.

"Master Gui, you and I don’t need this between us. Please get up." Wufu stepped forward, ready to help him up with her own hands, but Ah Jiu held her back.

Master Gui raised his head; his eyes were bloodshot as he rasped, "This is what I owe you."

When his gaze fell on her flat abdomen, it froze there, his heart sinking—could it be...?

He clenched his fists, his whole being shrouded in a sharp, bitter grief. Had he still come a step too late?

"The child is fine." As a man himself, Ah Jiu quickly understood what Master Gui was thinking and spoke up.

Master Gui’s eyes widened; the dark clouds scattered, sudden sunlight breaking through. That meant...the child was alive. But hadn’t she only been a few months along—no, right, seven months. With proper care, the baby might not have been doomed.

"I’ve given birth. It’s a boy." Wufu smiled slightly. "Let’s talk in the main room."

Master Gui stood up.

Ah Jiu said to Yuan Ye, "One after another, people are about to ride into the village, making quite a stir. Make arrangements—have men guard the places that need guarding. Report back at once if there’s any movement."

"Yes, sir." Yuan Ye answered respectfully.

Though this was just a small village, it still lay within Nanyue’s territory. With so many people coming here, half the village would soon know. If no sentries were posted and they were wiped out in one swoop, they might not even have a route of retreat.

And this little courtyard was all the more critical—for Beiyan’s most important sovereign was here, as well as the future young master.

Thinking that the Prince now had an heir, Yuan Ye felt his blood burn. He personally deployed the men, determined to make this place as impenetrable as an iron barrel. What had befallen the Princess Consort must never happen again!

Yuan Ye went off to arrange things. Before Wufu and Noble Master Ah Jiu entered the main room, they first greeted Zhou Xueli.

"Ah Qi, have our men withdraw to guard outside the gate. Don’t let them into the courtyard." Seeing Old Lady Zhou and the children so frightened, Master Gui instructed his own people.

Compared with the guards Ah Jiu had brought, Master Gui’s men were all killers from the Wind-Listening Pavilion. Every one of them had multiple lives on his hands, and they had just fought and killed on their way here. The murderous aura clinging to them could easily terrify people.

Ah Qi acknowledged the order and simply went off with Yuan Ye to help arrange things.

Once inside the main room, Zhou Xueli personally served tea and said that food was being prepared, then left the space to the few of them.

Master Gui looked at Wufu, wanting to speak but hesitating.

"No need to say much. You’ve come, so I trust you." Wufu said to Master Gui, "This was a setup aimed at me. I believe you didn’t betray me."

Master Gui’s throat tightened. "I didn’t." Then he added, "I’m sorry. It’s all because of my failings that you suffered this calamity."

"With the bond between you and me, there’s no need to say such things. If anything, isn’t it because of me that you came to my side to help? When the other side intends to lay a trap, they’ll always find a gap. We were careless, that’s all." Wufu said, "Though the defeat was devastating, at least we survived it."

Their gazes met; the feelings between them needed no words.

I trust you.

I have no regrets.

"Don’t worry. I won’t let you suffer all this for nothing." Master Gui reined in his emotions and said, "Song Cheng is dead. I ended him with my own hands."

Wufu was stunned for a moment and exchanged a look with Ah Jiu.
