Chapter 592: Chapter 591: Their Bottom Line
Not long after the plane took off, it was dinnertime.
At the chef’s recommendation, Yan Feifan’s dinner consisted of cheese-baked lobster with a side of vegetable salad and caviar.
Although lobster and caviar were considered delicacies and tasted quite good, Yan Feifan found they didn’t quite suit his palate.
It couldn’t help but make him sigh.
’A truly Chinese stomach like mine isn’t cut out for living abroad.’
After dinner, Yan Feifan went to his room to rest.
The plane had a total of three bedrooms for passengers. Yan Feifan, naturally, took the master suite, which was equipped with an office area and a private washroom.
Deng Shao, in a show of courtesy, gave the other two guest rooms to Zhong Xinyi and Dr. Nors, the vice president of Meilin Clinic.
He and his assistant would rest on the sofas in the main cabin.
Seeing that the bed in her room was large enough, Zhong Xinyi warmly invited Duan Yu to share it with her.
In his room, Yan Feifan didn’t go to bed. Instead, he took a tablet out of his backpack, preparing to study a video of Mr. Guo’s tongue correction surgery.
He turned on his tablet and was surprised to find a Wi-Fi connection.
Yan Feifan used the connection to have a voice chat with his sister and Su Ye for a bit, learning that they had returned to the villa at Phoenix Mountain Villa.
Yu Suye giggled and told him that she and his sister were in a small grove near the villa, searching for cicada nymphs.
They had already caught seven or eight of them.
Yu Suye also told him that if you soaked them in saltwater overnight and then deep-fried them in the morning, they were absolutely delicious.
This made Yan Feifan grimace.
’That girl will really eat anything,’ he thought.
After ending his chat with his sister and Su Ye, Yan Feifan began to watch the video of Mr. Guo’s surgery.
After watching for ten or twenty minutes, he heard a soft knock on the door.
"Come in!"
Yan Feifan looked up to see Zhong Xinyi pushing the door open and stepping inside.
He invited her to sit in the chair by the desk, and Zhong Xinyi began, "Feifan, I’m heading back this time for two main reasons. First, to give a detailed report to the bosses about the Fuhai Heaven and Earth negotiations."
"Second, to find a candidate for phalloplasty."
Yan Feifan made a soft sound of acknowledgment and nodded. "Here in the United States, people are generally more open and face fewer social constraints. Acceptance is higher, so you should be able to find plenty of candidates for that kind of surgery."
Zhong Xinyi chuckled. "That’s right. I often see LGBT groups in Los Angeles organizing events to campaign for greater social acceptance and their own rights."
"My plan is to use this surgery as an entry point to attract more members of the LGBT community who are seeking plastic surgery."
"After all, the plastic surgery center at the Affiliated Hospital, under Wang Chuan’s leadership, has more than enough expertise. It’s not much weaker than the well-known plastic surgery clinics here in the United States, our fees are relatively low, and most importantly, the administrative process is simple."
Zhong Xinyi sighed. "Feifan, you have no idea how cumbersome it is to get surgery in the United States."
"First, you need an examination and referral from a family doctor. Then you schedule an appointment with the relevant surgeon. It’s perfectly normal for that process to take a week or two, or even a month or two."
"Next comes a series of tests. You have to see specialists for your heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys, and so on. They all have to run tests and sign off, confirming that your vital organs are fine and won’t interfere with the surgery."
"If an issue is discovered with any one of your organs during this process, you have to resolve that problem before you can proceed with the surgery."
"And there’s the mandatory psychological evaluation as well."
"And every single one of these tests costs money."
Zhong Xinyi said ruefully, "Everyone back in China complains that our hospitals have a habit of ordering excessive tests. They should try getting sick in an American hospital, then they’d know what *real* excessive testing looks like."
"And that’s not all. The delays alone are enough to kill you."
Yan Feifan smiled. "Mrs. Zhong, that must be the process for an average person with health insurance at a public hospital, right?"
Zhong Xinyi hummed in agreement and added, "Of course, if you go to a private hospital, you’ll receive more professional, faster, and more attentive service. But the cost is astoundingly high."
"It’s a common occurrence for middle-class Americans to go bankrupt from a single serious illness."
"A place like Meilin Clinic primarily caters to America’s wealthy elite, as well as tycoons from all over the world."
"Most of them are wealthy individuals from the Middle East and China."
Zhong Xinyi met Yan Feifan’s gaze and smiled. "Feifan, it’s exceedingly rare for someone like you to be specially invited to the United States to perform a surgery."
"I hope to see more and more highly skilled doctors like you back home. That would make my business a lot easier."
Yan Feifan smiled. "That’s the way things are trending."
"Even now, the skill level of doctors back home isn’t bad at all. Our equipment might be a bit lacking, but we have a wealth of experience. We get so much hands-on practice, and we’ve seen all sorts of patients with all kinds of conditions."
"That’s true!"
Zhong Xinyi chimed in, then suddenly changed the subject. "Feifan, about Tang Zheng’s surgery... when can that begin?"
Yan Feifan said thoughtfully, "Currently, the in-vivo nerve cultivation trial is progressing quite smoothly, in line with our expectations."
"Mr. Tang hasn’t shown any adverse neurological side effects since his nerve-splitting surgery."
"If everything continues to go smoothly, we should be able to operate around the end of October."
Zhong Xinyi murmured in understanding, and Yan Feifan continued, "Mrs. Zhong, as for Yanyan’s surgery... I can’t say I’m one hundred percent certain, but I’m at least 70 to 80 percent confident."
Zhong Xinyi gave a relieved smile. "Wang Chuan has one hundred percent confidence in you."
"He always tells me that the best decision he’s made in the last ten years was acting decisively to snap you up for our hospital."
She let out a long sigh. "For so many years, Wang Chuan has been living only for Yanyan. His life has been so hard. I hope that after Yanyan recovers, he can start a new life of his own."
Yan Feifan said confidently, "Mrs. Zhong, you and Mr. Wang just need to hang in there for another half a year or so."
"By then, you’ll be able to shift your work focus back to China and live with Mr. Wang and Yanyan again."
"Us... together?"
Zhong Xinyi shook her head with a bitter smile. "Wang Chuan and I may have been childhood sweethearts, but... we can be friends now, but going back to the way things were... that’s impossible."
"Besides, I’m involved too deeply in certain things. It’s not that easy to just walk away."
"Anyway, let’s not talk about that."
Zhong Xinyi’s expression turned serious. "Wang Chuan told me that this trip of yours to the States might not be so simple. He asked me to keep an eye on things."
"Feifan, Los Angeles is my home turf, and I have some capable people here."
"If anything really happens, I’ll ensure your safety, even if I have to risk my own life."
Yan Feifan forced a smile. "Mrs. Zhong, I’m just here to perform a surgery. It can’t be that serious, can it?"
Zhong Xinyi let out a cold laugh. "Feifan, you shouldn’t think so highly of Americans."
"In reality, they still abide by the law of the jungle. All that talk about morality and human rights is just a way to make themselves look good while holding others down."
"They’re willing to sink far lower than we can imagine."
Zhong Xinyi added a final warning, "Feifan, be extra careful when you’re dealing with Americans."
"You should get some rest..."
After seeing Mrs. Zhong out of his room, Yan Feifan went back to watching the video of Mr. Guo’s surgery...
In the third bedroom, located toward the rear of the plane, Dr. Nors was complaining to someone over the satellite communication system.
"Your quote is too high. One million for a single surgery. It makes our offer much less attractive."
"You’ll need to come up with another way."
A deep male voice came through the satellite phone.
"Dr. Nors, you continue your recruitment attempts. We’ll start preparing some alternative plans on our end..."
