Chapter 593: Chapter 592: Tomorrow, They Will Be Proud of Me
Los Angeles and Binhai have a fifteen-hour time difference.
After a flight of nearly twelve hours, the private jet carrying Yan Feifan and the others landed at Los Angeles International Airport around 4:00 PM local time.
After disembarking, Yan Feifan saw the sun in the southwest and felt a bit off. His body and mind were ill at ease.
This was, after all, between six and seven in the morning in Binhai.
Fortunately, Yan Feifan had slept relatively well on the plane, demonstrating a surgeon’s ability to fall asleep anywhere, anytime. As a result, he was now quite refreshed.
He forced himself to stop looking at the disorienting sun and followed behind Zhong Xinyi, Deng Shao, and the others. They queued up, passed smoothly through United States Customs, and exited the terminal.
As soon as they stepped out of the terminal, a black, high-roofed General Motors commercial van pulled up in front of them.
Deng Shao’s male assistant proactively opened the door, revealing an interior with seats and decor comparable to an airplane’s business class.
Just then, Zhong Xinyi said, "Feifan, I won’t be going with you. My ride is here too."
Following Zhong Xinyi’s gesture, Yan Feifan saw a silver-gray Mercedes sedan parked not far away.
Standing in front of the car were two young Chinese people, a man and a woman.
The two of them, dressed in sharp suits, both had short, red-dyed hair about ten centimeters long and were holding sunglasses.
The woman had a ring in her left nostril, while the man wore a large earring, six centimeters in diameter, on his left ear.
Zhong Xinyi said with a hint of regret, "Feifan, since you’re in a hurry to return to China this time, I won’t be able to play the host and show you around Los Angeles."
"Next time you have a chance, I’ll give you a proper tour."
Yan Feifan replied politely, "Of course. When I have the chance, I’ll definitely take you up on your offer, Auntie..."
After parting ways with Zhong Xinyi, Yan Feifan, Duan Yu, Deng Shao, his male assistant, and Dr. Nors took the General Motors van straight to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, one of the best medical institutions in the Los Angeles area.
Once the van was moving smoothly, Deng Shao asked with concern, "Mr. Yan, would you like to rest for a bit? We can go to the hotel first."
Yan Feifan shook his head. "There’s no need. I’m in good shape, both mentally and physically. I can proceed directly to the surgery."
He paused for a moment before adding, "Have the hospital make all the surgical preparations in advance. I don’t want to wait around after I arrive."
"Also, send me Mr. Frandson’s latest physical data and the imaging scans of his cranial tumor."
Deng Shao quickly agreed and had his assistant immediately contact Mr. Frandson’s attending physician.
"By the way, who is the lead surgeon?"
Dr. Nors was the one who answered Yan Feifan’s question.
"It’s Dr. Jose Max from our Meilin Clinic. He is one of the top ten neurosurgeons in the United States."
Noles added proudly, "Besides Dr. Max, our Meilin Clinic has another of the top ten neurosurgeons in the United States: Dr. Kim Hackman."
Deng Shao couldn’t help but exclaim in admiration, "As one of the top medical institutions in the United States, and indeed the world, Meilin Clinic is truly a gathering of elites, brimming with talent."
Noles gave a faint smile and said, "Mr. Yan, Meilin Clinic is world-renowned, and our selection criteria have always been strict."
"Joining us and becoming a member means simultaneously gaining the recognition of your medical peers worldwide."
"This is an honor that, I believe, no hospital in China can offer."
"And it’s not something you can casually obtain just by publishing a certain number of papers or performing a certain number of successful surgeries."
Yan Feifan chuckled softly. "Dr. Nors, during our education back home, we were often taught a certain phrase."
He mulled it over for a moment, then described it in English as idiomatically as he could: "Today, I am proud of my school; tomorrow, my school will be proud of me."
Dr. Nors was taken aback for a moment.
She let the words sink in for a moment and understood that he was using them to tactfully tell her he didn’t care for the fame and glory Meilin Clinic offered. He intended to bring international influence to his own hospital through his own efforts.
’How naive and conceited!’
Noles scorned him inwardly, but her expression didn’t betray it. Just as she was about to continue persuading the young man to come to the United States, she noticed he had begun to focus on his phone screen.
She guessed that the brain tumor patient’s physical data and imaging scans had just been sent over.
So, Noles closed her mouth and said no more...
After a drive of nearly an hour and a half, Yan Feifan noticed the van entering a large complex of low-rise buildings surrounded by iron fences, with neat and beautiful landscaping.
He was told they had arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
The van drove at a low speed for another ten-odd minutes before finally stopping in front of a five-story, white, flat-roofed building.
Yan Feifan got out of the car, marveling to himself, ’Land in the United States really is cheap!’
He then saw a bald, white man in his forties, wearing a white coat and accompanied by two nurses, striding over to greet them.
Just as Yan Feifan assumed this tall, sturdy man was the lead surgeon, Dr. Nors, who was beside him, cried out in surprise, "Dr. Hackman, what are you doing here?"
"Where is Dr. Max?"
"Did you become the lead surgeon?"
Dr. Hackman, who had now reached them, explained, "Dr. Nors, Dr. Max is already in the operating room."
He turned his gaze to Yan Feifan, sizing him up as he spoke. "A puncture injection technique so exquisite in its execution and so remarkable in its effects... if I didn’t come to witness it with my own eyes, I’d never forgive myself."
"I just don’t know if you would allow it, Mr. Yan?"
Unconcerned about him stealing the technique, Yan Feifan said nonchalantly, "Dr. Hackman, you can stay by my side and observe the entire procedure."
This made Dr. Hackman overjoyed, and he hurriedly said, "Thank you, Mr. Yan, thank you!"
"Mr. Yan, I’ll take you to the operating room..."
Led enthusiastically by Dr. Hackman, Yan Feifan went with him to the surgical area on the second floor. First, they changed into blue, collarless, short-sleeved surgical shirts and pants in the changing room, then went to the sterilization room to scrub in.
Afterward, the two entered the operating room and, with the help of a nurse, put on sterile surgical gowns.
During this process, Yan Feifan scanned the operating room.
This operating room was much larger than a standard one, mainly because it housed a large spiral CT scanner.
Around the cranial surgery chair, Yan Feifan noted the lead surgeon, a surgical assistant, an anesthesiologist, and a nurse, all of whom were already prepared for the operation.
The patient, seated in the surgical chair and already under anesthesia, had his shaved head secured in place, also ready for the procedure.
To Yan Feifan’s surprise and yet not-so-surprise, there were several pieces of medical tape on the patient’s face.
Now in his surgical gown, Yan Feifan walked to the front of the cranial surgery chair.
Dr. Hackman’s voice rang out, "Mr. Yan, this is the lead surgeon, Dr. Jose Max."
After a two-second pause, Yan Feifan heard Dr. Hackman continue, "Dr. Max, I have received Mr. Yan’s permission to observe his entire surgical procedure."
"Don’t worry, I won’t be observing your surgical procedure. There’s no need, nor is there any value in it."
Yan Feifan could clearly hear the dissatisfaction lacing Dr. Hackman’s tone.
’These two don’t get along. Is this a case of one mountain not being able to house two tigers?’
Yan Feifan glanced at the two men, but his gaze unconsciously fell on the pieces of medical tape on the patient’s face.
Seeing this, Dr. Max had no time to deal with Hackman and quickly explained, "Mr. Yan, Mr. Frandson had an accidental fall this morning."
"Thank God, Mr. Frandson only suffered a few scrapes on his face. It hasn’t affected the tumor or the surgery in any way."
Having mentally confirmed the patient’s identity, Yan Feifan withdrew his gaze.
"Since there’s no impact, let’s begin the surgery..."
