Chapter 697: Chapter 696: Afraid of a Bad Influence
It was nearly six-thirty in the evening at the Yan siblings’ home in the Zuimo Court District.
Yan Feifan had just put a piece of braised pork in his mouth when his sister’s giggles reached his ears.
"A new video of you being chased all over the place by a pig just popped up on my work social feed. Feifan, want to see your moment of glory?"
Yan Feifan completely ignored the phone his sister shoved in his face, refusing to engage with his shameless sibling.
"Sis, stop teasing Feifan."
Yu Suye, unable to watch any longer, chimed in, "What Feifan went through was actually quite dangerous."
"Pigs are omnivores, and their bite is powerful. Getting bitten hard by one is no joke."
Yan Ziruo put down her phone, trying to suppress a smile. "It’s not every day Feifan gets himself into such a hilarious mess, and you two aren’t even playing along."
"It’s not funny at all. I’m over it."
After a brief pause, Yan Ziruo asked again, "Feifan, what’s going to happen to the pig? Are you going to take good care of it and see how long it lives?"
Yan Feifan shook his head. "Pigs experience transplant rejection, too. It definitely wouldn’t have lived long, so there was no point in observing it further."
"After it was caught this afternoon, it was euthanized on the spot with an air injection for a quick death."
Yan Ziruo let out an "Oh," then asked curiously, "The pig in the video looked pretty big. Must’ve been a couple hundred pounds."
"Did you send it to the hospital cafeteria?"
"Or...?"
Yan Feifan shot his sister a look. "Sis, it was a lab animal. Its body was full of anesthetics. You can’t eat it."
"According to regulations for managing lab animals, they have to be handed over to the hospital’s medical waste disposal department for proper processing."
"Usually, that means incineration."
Yan Ziruo said regretfully, "That’s such a waste. Raising a pig that big just for one heart transplant, only to have it disposed of immediately."
Yu Suye chuckled. "That’s why training a qualified doctor is so expensive, Sis."
"The number of lab mice, rabbits, monkeys, and pigs that die at their hands easily adds up to the dozens, even hundreds. It’s just part of the process."
Yan Ziruo huffed, "So that’s why doctors are all so ruthless and cold-blooded. They’re used to killing."
"Okay, enough of this talk. It’s ruining my appetite!"
Yan Ziruo changed the subject. "About that villa in the Academician District—they’re putting up the scaffolding today to start renovating the exterior walls and roof."
"What about the interior design plans?"
Yu Suye readily jumped in. "Sis, I’ve already scheduled a meeting with the designer. We’re meeting again tomorrow night."
"We just need to confirm a few more details in person, and then they can start working on the interior."
Yan Ziruo let out a soft "Oh."
She could clearly sense that Yu Suye was doing everything she could to exclude her from the villa’s renovation.
She was acting entirely like the lady of the house, and Feifan, true to his nature, couldn’t be bothered with anything outside of medicine.
It left a bitter taste in Yan Ziruo’s mouth, as if the child she had painstakingly raised was being stolen away from her.
’Still, she knew this day would come eventually.’
’As long as her brother was happy and Yu Suye was good to him, Yan Ziruo would endure it. She’d just have to swallow her grievances.’
’Who else but his older sister would do it? An older sister is like a second mother, after all.’
Yan Ziruo let her thoughts drift for just a moment, and her nose began to tingle with a mix of sentimentality and sadness.
Catching sight of her brother, still completely absorbed in his food and paying her no mind, Yan Ziruo rolled her eyes in a flash of annoyance.
"Feifan, Uncle said he and Mrs. Xia are going to register their marriage this week. What about their gift?"
Yan Feifan looked at his sister, confused. "Didn’t we say we were going to buy Uncle a car?"
"Sis, are we short on money?"
Her brother’s words reminded Yan Ziruo that she was the one holding his purse strings, and her mood instantly brightened.
"It’s more than enough. Besides the money from treating that patient from the United Kingdom, we have your August salary, the payments from Baining Hospital and the PLA General Hospital, plus the bonus for your military award. It all adds up to nearly three million. That’s plenty."
"I was thinking we’d keep the total cost under one and a half million."
Yan Feifan said casually, "Just handle it, Sis. You know more about cars than I do anyway."
Yan Ziruo chuckled. "Alright. I’ll take Uncle and Mrs. Hui to go car shopping in the next couple of days."
"Hey, Feifan, what big gift are you going to get me when I get married?"
Yan Feifan cracked a grin. "Sis, the villa at Phoenix Mountain Villa, half the shares in Extraordinary Medical Technology, the shares in Luo’s Private Kitchen, and that toy company you’re running with Zeng Ni..."
"You have way more assets to your name than I do now, Sis."
Speaking of which, Yan Feifan remembered something else. "Mrs. Hui also gave us the agreement for a ten-percent stake in Xinfeng Restaurant back then."
"You should take this opportunity to give that agreement to Uncle, Sis."
Yan Ziruo hummed in agreement, then said with a playful grin, "Assets are assets. You can’t count them as a wedding gift."
"Feifan, when the time comes, I don’t need an expensive gift from you. But it has to be something that shows you care, something you picked out with thought."
"Fine. I’ll be sure to put some thought into your wedding gift."
Yan Feifan agreed casually, then added teasingly, "The first step to getting married is finding someone willing to marry you, Sis."
"And you haven’t even found a boyfriend yet."
Yan Ziruo swatted him on the shoulder. "You little brat!" she said indignantly. "I have a long line of guys pursuing me. I just haven’t found anyone I actually like yet."
Yan Feifan snorted. "Well then, take your time choosing, Sis. Just don’t get overwhelmed by all the options..."
After they finished their boisterous dinner, they were chatting in the living room when Duan Yu brought something up.
Her boyfriend, Mo Xiaolei, had his resignation approved.
Duan Yu was thinking of going home this weekend and bringing Mo Xiaolei with her for her family to meet.
Yan Feifan was naturally all for it and asked his sister to help prepare some gifts for Duan Yu’s family.
After chatting for about half an hour, Yan Feifan went back to his room to get some work done.
This was a big work week for Yan Feifan.
Over the weekend, he had a freelance surgery scheduled at Baining Hospital, and Dr. Kevin Vega was also bringing a new patient.
To Yan Feifan’s slight relief, the medical file sent by Dr. Vega was for a patient with an intraspinal tumor.
As for the two patient files from Baining Hospital, one was for a patient with a cerebral blood clot.
More than an hour passed as Yan Feifan meticulously reviewed the files for the patients he would be operating on this week.
He stretched and realized Yu Suye had come up behind him at some point.
Yan Feifan took the glass of juice she offered and took a large gulp.
"Something up?"
Yu Suye shook her head. "I just made some juice and wanted to bring you a glass."
Yan Feifan took another sip, and something occurred to him.
"Hey, Su Ye, is the president of your Baining Hospital still on that inspection tour abroad? It’s been months, and I haven’t seen him. It’s always been Vice President Yu Youhai in charge."
Yu Suye hesitated for a moment. "Actually, he’s abroad receiving medical treatment. Pancreatic cancer."
She sighed softly. "As the president of a well-known hospital, getting treated abroad... they were afraid it would look bad if word got out. So the official story is that he’s abroad for inspection and study."
It dawned on Yan Feifan. "Then why doesn’t he just officially step down from the president’s position and focus on his treatment?" he asked.
Yu Suye shook her head. "I’m not sure about that. I don’t know what they discussed or decided."
Just then, his phone rang.
It was Mr. Jing, the new head of the trauma surgery department.
"Mr. Yan, a concert pianist’s middle finger was just severed. Are you free to come over?"
Yan Feifan said thoughtfully, "Mr. Jing, I have a very packed schedule this week. An all-nighter would set a lot of things back."
"Understood, understood!"
Mr. Jing replied, understanding, then politely asked, "Would Dr. Yu be available to come to the hospital?"
"Even Mrs. Chen couldn’t stop praising her finger reattachment technique..."
