Chapter 698 - 697: Main Direction of Attack

Chapter 698: Chapter 697: Main Direction of Attack

On Tuesday morning, around 7:30, Yan Feifan brought breakfast to the office in the Little Red House and found the air conditioning blasting, making the room a bit chilly.

Yu Suye was sleeping on her side on the sofa by the window, a long, pale leg sticking out from under the blanket, her calf dangling over the edge.

Yan Feifan turned the AC temperature up by three degrees, casually placed the breakfast on the coffee table, then moved Su Ye’s leg back onto the sofa and pulled the blanket over her properly.

Once he was done, Yan Feifan looked up to see Su Ye propping her head up with one hand, her wide, sparkling eyes fixed on him.

"You’re awake. Why didn’t you sleep in the bed? It would have been more comfortable."

Yu Suye sat up, yawned, and said, "After surgery last night, I came here, changed into my pajamas, and was too tired and sleepy to move. It was just easier to sleep on the sofa."

As she spoke, her hair a mess, she reached out, picked up a pan-fried dumpling from the coffee table, and tossed it into her mouth.

Yu Suye chewed a couple of times, her eyes curving into crescents. With a blissful look, she pouted and said, "Pork and green onion filling. My favorite. Thanks, honey!"

"Go wash up first, then eat!" Yan Feifan said with a look of feigned disgust.

Yu Suye giggled, slipped on her slippers, and scurried off to the bathroom.

A few minutes later, she reemerged looking fresh-faced, her long, straight hair simply tied back.

She sat on the now-tidied sofa, picked up the large cup of soy milk from the coffee table, and took two huge gulps.

Yu Suye put down the soy milk and dished, "Feifan, that guy from last night... turns out he’s a somewhat famous pianist in Binhai."

"The police said he was fooling around with one of his students and got caught at home by the student’s boyfriend."

She clicked her tongue and sighed. "I hear the middle finger is the most important one for playing the piano."

"After it’s reattached, his right middle finger will be a bit shorter and less flexible. He’ll probably never be able to play at his original level again."

Yan Feifan said softly, "The guy who cut off his finger was actually pretty smart. In a forensic evaluation, severing a thumb is considered a major injury, but severing any other single finger is just a minor one. Plus, he ruined the guy’s career."

Yu Suye swallowed her food and chuckled. "Feifan, you have a unique way of looking at things. The guy who did the cutting was probably just acting out of anger and didn’t think it through that much."

She sighed again. "Physical altercations caused by cheating seem to be getting more and more common these days."

Yan Feifan analyzed, "There are more temptations in society now, and people don’t value love and marriage as much as they used to."

"I’ve heard that the number of couples getting divorced each year is almost the same as the number of new marriages."

Yu Suye took another sip of soy milk and asked jokingly, "Feifan, do you ever worry that I might cheat on you?"

Yan Feifan shot her a warning glance and said slowly, "If you don’t love me anymore, you can leave. I won’t tolerate being wronged while we’re still together."

Yu Suye’s lips formed a pout. "Such a heavy threat," she hummed. "So scary."

"Feifan, if you ever turned bad, you’d definitely be more terrifying than Hanbani."

Yan Feifan said in all seriousness, "Then don’t let me turn bad."

Yu Suye nodded emphatically. "A difficult task indeed. To stop you from turning to the dark side and becoming a great demon who plagues the world, I’ll just have to sacrifice my entire life to redeem you."

"Here, eat a pan-fried dumpling full of love..."

Faced with the dumpling Yu Suye held to his lips, Yan Feifan reluctantly opened his mouth and accepted it.

He ate the dumpling in a few bites, then stood up. "I hear something next door. I’m going to go check..."

Yan Feifan went through the connecting door to the adjacent office and found that the early arrival was Mr. Shi Min.

"When you get old, you don’t sleep as much!"

Shi Min, who was tidying his desk, stopped what he was doing, took a document out of his drawer, and handed it to Yan Feifan.

"These are the regulations on profit sharing that the hospital administration office sent over yesterday afternoon."

Yan Feifan glanced through it.

The regulations stated that for every patient treated by Yan Feifan’s medical research lab, after deducting the corresponding treatment costs, the hospital would take a cut of the profits based on a tiered percentage.

For profits up to one hundred thousand, the hospital would take a ten-percent cut.

For the portion of profits between one hundred thousand and two hundred thousand, the cut would be twenty percent.

For the portion of profits between two hundred thousand and three hundred thousand, the cut would be thirty percent.

And so on, up to a maximum cut of fifty percent.

"Feifan, these tiers for the percentage cuts are a bit low."

"With your surgical fees easily running into the millions, tiers that start at a mere one hundred thousand mean they’ll basically be taking the highest cut of fifty percent from the get-go."

Yan Feifan said casually, "A hundred-thousand tier isn’t considered low for other departments. It’s just that the pricing for some of my specific surgeries is too high."

"Mr. Shi, let’s just leave it at that."

Seeing that Yan Feifan wasn’t concerned, Shi Min didn’t press the issue and changed the subject. "Feifan, the document says the profit sharing is calculated after deducting treatment costs."

"These costs—like bed fees, medication fees, medical consumables, and so on—are set at a uniform price by the hospital. We have no control over them."

"What we do have the power to decide are the items counted as treatment costs, like your surgical fees and allowances, the surgical allowances for assistants and nurses, nursing fees, and the like."

"Feifan, what standards should we set for these?"

Yan Feifan mused, "Mr. Shi, set my surgical fee standard at the level of a senior chief physician."

"For everyone else, base their rates on their current professional grade, but bump it up by two levels."

Shi Min acknowledged, "Okay. I’ll work with Mr. Lu to draw up a relatively complete human resources cost table for our lab and submit it to the hospital’s finance department."

"Also, Feifan, what about the standards for bonuses, which our lab can decide independently?"

Now that the research lab handled its own accounting, the hospital’s finance department would still issue the basic salaries, title-based wages, and seniority pay for all staff on the hospital’s official payroll. This also included various surgical allowances and service fees that the lab reported.

The lab, however, could independently decide the amount of their bonuses. The funds for this would come from the lab’s discretionary profits.

Take Professor Shi Min, for example. As a retiree hired by the lab, his entire compensation was the lab’s responsibility; the hospital wasn’t involved.

"As for bonuses..."

Yan Feifan scratched his head. "The lab was just established, so there’s no standard or precedent..."

"Let’s wait until the beginning of next month. We can decide then, based on the lab’s profits and everyone’s performance this month."

Shi Min chuckled. "Alright, that’s a more prudent approach..."

The two of them discussed a few other miscellaneous matters before another early bird finally arrived at the lab: Pan Jichuan.

"Teacher, good morning!"

"Mr. Shi, good morning!"

Yan Feifan looked at Pan Jichuan, who had run over to greet them. "Pan Jichuan, I just remembered something I overlooked."

"Your situations are different from mine. You all need to decide on a specialization."

"Tell the other three to make their decision in the next day or two, so I can make specific arrangements for your training."

Pan Jichuan nodded, then added, "Teacher, I’ve already chosen."

"I used to want to be a plastic surgeon."

Pan Jichuan said, a little embarrassed, "But a while ago, after receiving some training in surgical aesthetics, I realized my talent in that area is limited. I don’t think I could ever become a top-tier plastic surgeon."

He paused. "Teacher, my ambition now is to become a renowned cardiac surgeon."

Yan Feifan nodded. "Got it."

"In a little while, I’ll take some time to evaluate your individual strengths and aptitudes to see if they align with your wishes and choices..."

「After eight in the morning, Yan Feifan hurried to the neurosurgery department to receive instruction from Mr. Lo Jun...」
