Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 706 - 705: Surgical Improvements

Chapter 706: Chapter 705: Surgical Improvements

The heart transplant surgery, led by Liang Zhaokui, took nearly half an hour longer than usual. This was because he provided running commentary and deliberately slowed down to demonstrate key steps.

The surgery, which started a little after ten in the morning, didn’t end until almost five in the afternoon, lasting nearly seven hours.

For Yan Feifan, this was no small challenge.

The surgery had come up rather suddenly, so Yan Feifan hadn’t made any specific preparations for it this morning.

For one, he hadn’t eaten his special high-calorie, low-water breakfast for major surgeries.

If Yan Feifan had been the lead surgeon, the physical and mental exertion would have been immense, and a lot of that fluid would have been expelled as sweat.

But today, most of the liquid had pooled in his lower abdomen.

Fortunately, Yan Feifan was only an assistant surgeon and could be replaced.

Nearing the end of the surgery, Yan Feifan could no longer hold it in. He told Mr. Liang the truth, got his permission, and left the operating room early.

Afterward, having taken care of his business, Yan Feifan rested in the locker room and waited for the surgery to conclude...

Around five in the afternoon, Yan Feifan exchanged a few words with Mr. Liang, who had just finished the surgery, and then left the cardiac surgery department.

Mr. Liang was also a man in his fifties.

A major surgery like this was enough to leave him exhausted, and he really didn’t have the energy to mentor Yan Feifan any further.

Seeing that there was still some time before the end of the workday, Yan Feifan headed back to his office in the Little Red House.

As he walked into the large, shared office, he saw a young man flipping a cocktail shaker up and down as if he were juggling.

Next to this guy was a three-tiered metal cart on wheels, which held bartending tools, many bottles of various shapes filled with different colored liquids, ice, some fruit, and so on.

Ye Lin, Xv Shuang, Yang Qing, Berry, and a few others—along with, surprisingly, Mr. Vega—were gathered around the young bartender, clapping and cheering from time to time.

Yan Feifan didn’t see Mr. Shi Min. He recognized the young man putting on the show; his name was Cui Bo.

’It’s been over three months. Looks like the kid’s right hand has completely recovered, and now he can tend bar again.’

’But coming to a hospital office to give a live flair bartending demonstration is a bit out of line.’

Seeing Yan Feifan walk in, Ye Lin, Xv Shuang, and the others scurried back to their workstations like startled rabbits.

Cui Bo’s hand movements, however, didn’t falter.

After a series of dazzlingly complex maneuvers, he skillfully poured the liquid from the shaker into a glass half-filled with ice and handed it to Mr. Vega.

Then, Cui Bo set down the shaker, straightened his clothes, and bowed slightly to Yan Feifan. "Mr. Yan, as you can see, my right hand can tend bar again."

"Thank you for your miraculous work!"

In response to his thanks, Yan Feifan gestured with his eyes toward the metal cart beside him, laden with liquor bottles, and asked, "What’s all this about?"

Cui Bo gave a sheepish chuckle and explained, a little embarrassed, "I wanted to give you a live demonstration to show that I’ve truly made a full recovery."

"I was also hoping to mix a few drinks to express my gratitude."

"This is the best thing I have to offer."

"But I just heard from them that you don’t drink."

Just then, Dr. Kevin, who had taken a few sips of his drink, said in English, "Mr. Yan, this is a well-made cocktail. It’s no worse than what I’ve had at famous bars in the United States."

Yan Feifan looked at Cui Bo and said, "I appreciate the sentiment."

"I’m also happy that your right hand has fully recovered."

"However, as medical professionals, it’s not appropriate to be drinking in the office."

Cui Bo said awkwardly, "You’re right, Mr. Yan. I was being inconsiderate."

Yan Feifan’s gaze shifted to Dr. Kevin. "Dr. Kevin, you didn’t return to your country today. Is there something you need to see me about?"

"Let’s talk in my office."

Kevin drained the cocktail in his glass, set it down, gave Cui Bo a thumbs-up in appreciation, and followed Yan Feifan into the adjacent office.

After taking a seat in the small reception area, Kevin said, "Rachel and Xiaomixi are being discharged and will return to the United States next Monday. I’ll be going back with them this time."

"I’m also taking the opportunity to have a vacation and tour Binhai."

"Every time I come, it’s always in a rush. I’ve never had the chance to properly explore the city."

Yan Feifan offered, "Binhai is a beautiful city that’s both international and modern, yet also rich in history. There are many places worth visiting."

"You won’t be disappointed, Dr. Kevin."

Kevin chuckled lightly. "Binhai is indeed a rapidly developing and charming city. I’m sure I’ll grow to like it."

After a brief pause, he changed the subject. "Mr. Yan, the incision on Misi’s tongue is healing faster than I expected. The shape of her tongue has also been beautifully restored. It was a successful surgery."

"It’s all thanks to your superb skills, Mr. Yan."

"Mr. Yan, Misi’s sister’s first tongue correction surgery failed. I was wondering..."

Yan Feifan understood what Kevin was getting at and interrupted him. "Dr. Kevin, it’s a bit premature to call Misi’s surgery a success. After all, she still needs three to five months of speech therapy."

"Let’s talk about it then."

Kevin nodded and said with a smile, "Alright, we’ll talk then."

"Personally, I firmly believe that after some hard training, Misi will definitely be able to speak clear and pleasant American English."

"With that precedent, her sister will be more easily persuaded and won’t be so resistant to a second surgery..."

The two chatted idly for a few more minutes before Kevin took his leave.

Yan Feifan saw that it was past closing time, so he left the office with Feng Jian.

Ye Lin and the others, who had been closely monitoring the goings-on in the office, perked up again after they saw Yan Feifan leave.

"Cui Bo, another round! I want a martini."

Cui Bo looked troubled. "But Mr. Yan said it wasn’t right for you all to be drinking in the office."

Ye Lin giggled. "It’s fine, it’s after hours now."

"None of us are on duty tonight, and it’s Friday night—the perfect time to relax and have some fun..."

Yan Feifan had no idea that his research lab had temporarily turned into a bar. When he returned to his residence at Zuimo Court, he found that Tian Yu was there too.

"Mr. Yan, did you miss me?"

"No. Every time you come over, you just eat and drink everything in sight. What’s there to miss?"

Tian Yu looked like she wanted to pounce on him, but she could see how tired Yan Feifan was, so she didn’t throw a fit.

"Hmph, you may not have missed me, but Ruoruo did."

Tian Yu retorted, then added excitedly, "Mr. Yan, I’m the Youth League Secretary for my class now."

"I have to provide guidance for my classmates and organize activities. It’s a ton of work, just as important as being the class president..."

Yan Feifan offered a perfunctory encouragement. "The affiliated high school focuses on developing well-rounded students and has a lot of activities. In this position, you can work on your organizational, communication, and presentation skills."

Tian Yu giggled. "That’s what my homeroom teacher told me too..."

Dinner began about fifteen minutes later.

At the dinner table, Yu Suye told Yan Feifan that her brother, Yu Chuanbai, and his fiancée would be coming over for dinner tomorrow night.

Her mother, Su Ru, was thinking of returning to Jingcheng with Yan Feifan on Sunday morning.

After dinner, Yan Feifan returned to his bedroom and began to think about how to write the post-operative analysis report for today’s surgery.

’As a renowned cardiac surgery expert, Mr. Liang’s actual surgical technique was flawless.’

’If I really had to nitpick, by my standards, the vascular suturing could have been more refined and done a bit faster.’

’But considering the entire surgery couldn’t begin until the donor heart was confirmed to have arrived, I think the surgical sequence needs to be improved.’

’Also, the overall pace of the surgery could be faster.’

’For organ transplants, the shorter the duration of the surgery, the better the patient’s post-operative recovery tends to be...’
