Chapter 744: Chapter 743: Completely Convinced
Yan Feifan and Dr. Qiu Ge’s first day of experimental treatments—two patients in the morning and four in the afternoon—kept them busy for the entire day.
Around 7:00 PM, Yan Feifan and Duan Yu returned to their residence at Zuimo Court to find that, in addition to his sister and Yu Suye, his aunt Liu Hui was also there.
Dinner was already on the table—a magnificent spread. They hadn’t started eating yet, waiting for Yan Feifan to get home.
This made Yan Feifan feel a little guilty.
"Aunt Liu Hui, you don’t have to wait for me for dinner. I often work late with no set schedule."
"You’re pregnant now, so you shouldn’t go hungry."
Yan Feifan then looked at Yan Ziruo and said teasingly, "Sis, you never used to wait for me. Why are you putting on a show for Aunt Liu Hui?"
Seeing his sister glare at him as if she were about to strike, Yan Feifan quickly dodged behind his aunt.
Liu Hui chuckled softly. "Feifan, we waited for you today because a new housekeeper made this dinner."
"We need you to try it and see if it’s to your liking!"
After a short pause, Liu Hui added, "Those of us in the restaurant business either eat dinner very early or very late."
"I’m gradually trying to get back on a normal meal schedule, but I’m not hungry right now anyway."
"Feifan, go wash your hands..."
After washing up, Yan Feifan came to the dining table and sat down.
He surveyed the dishes on the table. While they were mostly home-style classics like braised pork, steamed fish, and shiitake mushrooms with bok choy, they didn’t look as refined as the ones Du Qiu used to make.
Yan Feifan picked up a piece of braised pork and put it in his mouth...
To his surprise, it was tender, sweet, and fragrant.
Yan Feifan felt it tasted just a little bit better than Du Qiu’s.
He nodded. "This braised pork is actually really good! Who recommended this new housekeeper?"
Yan Ziruo eagerly took the credit. "My colleague from the finance department, Liu Xiyun. You performed cosmetic surgery on her, remember? She’s the one who made the recommendation."
"Her name is Si Lan. She’s only thirty-six and has two sons. Her husband is a disabled veteran. Apparently, he lost a leg a few years ago during a mine-clearing mission."
This puzzled Yan Feifan. He turned and asked, "Duan Yu, are there still places in our country that need mine-clearing?"
Duan Yu nodded. "In certain border regions, like those with Myanmar and Vietnam, there are still minefields that haven’t been fully cleared."
"Every year, soldiers are injured or even killed during mine-clearing operations."
Yan Feifan let out a soft "oh" and sighed. "I can’t believe that even in this era of peace, we still have soldiers bleeding and dying in dangerous environments like minefields."
He looked at his sister. "Sis, her husband should be considered a hero. Doesn’t the government provide for people in his situation?"
"Why would she need to work as a housekeeper?"
Yan Ziruo explained, "The government arranged a light-duty job for her husband, but they have twin sons."
"Si Lan used to be a stay-at-home mom, taking care of her two sons and her husband."
"This year, her sons started middle school, so she doesn’t need to shuttle them around anymore. With the financial burden of two boys, she decided to find a suitable job she could manage."
Yan Ziruo added, "Her one condition is that she doesn’t stay overnight. She can come early to make breakfast and clean."
"And then go home after she finishes making dinner..."
Yan Feifan tried the other dishes. They were all quite good, so he decided they should give her a trial period.
Once that was settled, Yu Suye asked with concern, "Feifan, how did the experimental treatments go today?"
Yan Feifan rubbed the bridge of his nose. "The results were mixed. Of the six patients in deep comas, we found the infrasound frequency that triggered a strong brainstem reaction in four of them."
"But we couldn’t find a specific resonant infrasound frequency for the other two."
Yan Ziruo asked curiously, "Feifan, does that mean the experimental treatment failed for those two patients?"
Yan Feifan sighed softly. "For our infrasound awakening therapy, it’s not considered a failure. This is also a result of the clinical trial."
"Of course, for those two patients and their families, it’s terrible news."
"However, we’re not giving up on them just yet..."
Yan Feifan took a sip of soup and continued, "We ran too many tests on those two patients today. We were concerned that pushing further might cause brain damage."
"We’ll let them rest for a day or two to recover, and then we’ll run more tests."
"In the meantime, Dr. Qiu Ge and I will think about other stimulation methods."
Yu Suye tried to comfort him. "Four out of six patients had strong reactions. That’s a very high success rate."
"You know, with patients in a vegetative state, even a one-in-ten chance of a full recovery is considered high."
Yan Feifan exhaled. "A strong reaction doesn’t guarantee they’ll wake up. And even if they do, it doesn’t mean they won’t have severe long-term complications."
"Besides, these six patients were ones we carefully selected..."
Yan Feifan said glumly, "All in all, we have a long road ahead of us with this infrasound awakening research."
Yu Suye comforted him, "Feifan, you’ve barely started. This was your very first day of experimental treatments. It’s inevitable there would be some problems."
"When does anything ever go perfectly and succeed on the first try?"
"As you accumulate more test data and continue to refine the therapy, the results are bound to improve."
"Let’s hope so," Yan Feifan replied noncommittally.
’Although he wouldn’t admit it, either aloud or to himself, he was genuinely dissatisfied that today’s experimental treatment hadn’t been a one-hundred-percent success. He felt dejected.’
’After all, in his previous diagnoses and surgeries, he had not only maintained a perfect success rate, but had often achieved results that far exceeded expectations.’
’The look in the families’ eyes when he had to explain the situation to them—that desperate, pleading gaze—had been particularly hard to bear.’
’He understood what it felt like to have your hopes raised so high only to have them come crashing down.’
He could only promise them that he wouldn’t give up, that he would continue testing and work to improve the therapy.
After dinner, Yan Feifan went back to his bedroom. He forced himself to stop thinking about the day’s treatments and focus instead on the surgical plans for tomorrow.
He had to fly to Jingcheng early the next morning.
Three percutaneous injection tumor surgeries were waiting for him at Baining Hospital...
Around 9:00 PM, Yan Feifan received a call from Zhang Run of the Su Province Medical Technology Research Institute.
"Mr. Yan, I have some good news."
"The five tumors on my ex-wife’s body have all shrunk significantly, according to the MRI scans we just did."
"The liver tumor, in particular, has shrunk by a third."
"Mr. Yan, thank you so, so much!"
Yan Feifan replied modestly, "You’re too kind. The main factor was the powerful effect of the anti-cancer drug you developed."
Zhang Run’s voice came through the phone. "Mr. Yan, to be honest with you..."
"In the past, my test subjects would experience some discomfort in the days following the injection due to drug leakage."
"But my ex-wife hasn’t experienced any of those symptoms over the past few days."
After a pause, Zhang Run said sincerely, "Mr. Yan, I want to apologize again for doubting you back then."
"Mr. Yan, your skill is unparalleled. I’m truly, completely convinced..."
