Chapter 745: Chapter 744: Good Luck
Yan Feifan’s latest Sunday guest surgery trip to Jingcheng went as smoothly as ever, with all three procedures proving successful.
After all, whether it was treating spinal canal tumors or performing targeted injections for brain tumors, these procedures were familiar territory for the current Yan Feifan and no longer posed much of a challenge.
Of course, Yan Feifan still spent a great deal of time meticulously preparing each surgical plan, just as he always did.
No two patients’ tumors were ever exactly the same.
Yan Feifan had to carefully design and calculate the puncture path and the injection volume of absolute ethanol for each one.
He was keenly aware that there was no room for the slightest bit of negligence on the operating table.
Any mistake by the lead surgeon could very well cost the patient their life.
And at that point, no amount of regret or apology could bring back a life that was lost.
He always kept this in mind and constantly reminded himself to stay vigilant.
The only thing that truly surprised Yan Feifan on this trip to Jingcheng was that, at lunchtime, he was treated to noodles with a rich gravy made by Mrs. Su herself.
According to Mrs. Su, she had noticed how much Yan Feifan enjoyed the noodles she made last time. Since she had nothing else to do this Sunday, she came over on a whim to make a bowl for him.
This left Yan Feifan feeling rather overwhelmed and deeply flattered.
As he was leaving Baining Hospital that afternoon, he ran into Zhao Xiaoting, who had come specifically to bring him some local pastries from Jingcheng.
She told him this would likely be the last time she’d be bringing him pastries from Jingcheng for a while.
Zhao Xiaoting was nearly finished filming her scenes for the television series she was co-starring in with the famous actress, Ding Xuan.
After that, she would be returning to Binhai to resume her studies while also preparing for a new television series funded by the Red Star Culture Company.
Yan Feifan and Duan Yu had an uneventful trip back to their home at Zuimo Court, arriving around 6:30 p.m.
After having dinner with Yu Suye, who had been waiting at home, he spent some time pondering a new method for stimulating the brainstem with infrasound. Not only did he make no progress, but he also ended up with a slight headache.
Yan Feifan decided to put it aside for now. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Yu Suye, barefoot and in her pajamas, curled up on the sofa reading a medical journal.
He got up from the sofa, rolling his shoulders and stretching his back.
"Su Ye, I’m going to take a walk around the university campus to clear my head."
"Want to come with me?"
Yu Suye paused for a second, then nodded eagerly. "Yes, yes!"
"Just wait for me to change my clothes..."
As she spoke, Yu Suye was already off the sofa. In a few quick steps, she was at the staircase, taking three or four stairs in a single bound and scrambling up to the loft.
Yan Feifan only had to wait two or three minutes before Yu Suye came down from the loft, looking fresh and energetic with her hair in a ponytail, wearing a t-shirt, slim-fit jeans, and sneakers...
A little over ten minutes later, Yu Suye was pulling Yan Feifan by the hand through the west gate of Binhai University.
As for Duan Yu, he tactfully kept a discreet distance, trailing not too far behind them.
It was nearly 8:30 on a Sunday evening, and the campus was brightly lit.
Students were everywhere—in groups of three or five, or in pairs—strolling about, gathered around stone tables, or sitting on benches under the trees, laughing and chatting animatedly.
Looking around, Yu Suye remarked with admiration, "University campuses in the south really are more refined than the ones in Jingcheng. They look much more elegant."
"Feifan, since you’re revisiting your old stomping grounds, why don’t you show me some of the places or sights that hold special memories for you?"
Yan Feifan thought for a moment. "During my years here, the places I went to most were the medical school’s academic building, the library, the lab building, and the cafeteria."
"They’re just ordinary buildings, nothing special to look at."
Yu Suye sighed softly. "Knowing your personality, and based on what you just said, I’m guessing you never really explored the Bin University campus much during your time here, did you, Feifan?"
Yan Feifan chuckled. "Don’t make me out to be such a bookworm, completely oblivious to the world. I did explore the campus."
"Just not very often, that’s all."
Yu Suye giggled. "Right. For you, one walk-through is enough to memorize everything."
"The next time you want to see it, you can just review it in your mind."
Yan Feifan smiled without a word, pulling Yu Suye by the hand down a more scenic path...
They were on an after-dinner stroll with no particular destination, just wandering aimlessly.
Yan Feifan stopped thinking about the infrasound-induced awakening and pushed aside all thoughts of surgery or medicine, completely clearing his mind to let himself rest.
As for Yu Suye, she cherished this rare opportunity to be out on a walk with Yan Feifan.
She was like a curious little girl, asking about every interesting sight or building they passed.
And Yan Feifan was happy to answer each of her questions.
After walking for a while, they wandered toward a place buzzing with activity.
The campus’s north basketball courts.
It was an outdoor area with ten standard concrete basketball courts lined up in a row.
Full-court games were underway on three of the courts, drawing large crowds of spectators, with cheers and shouts of encouragement rising and falling continuously.
On the other courts, groups of players practiced their shots or played half-court games under each basket.
The entire area was a scene of noisy, feverish excitement.
Yu Suye glanced at a tall, shirtless guy on a nearby court driving forcefully for a layup.
She suddenly asked, "Feifan, what sports did you play in college?"
"And don’t tell me all you did was study."
Yan Feifan shot her a look. "A surgeon needs to be in good physical shape, not just have good skills. I’m well aware of that."
"I took up long-distance running to build up my physique, stamina, and willpower."
"Back in school, while I didn’t run every day, I ran a 5k or a 10k at least three times a week!"
To prove he wasn’t exaggerating, Yan Feifan added, "And let me tell you, Su Ye, I once took fifth place in the 5,000-meter race at the university’s track and field meet."
Yu Suye said in surprise, "Only fifth? Feifan, aren’t you supposed to be number one in everything?"
Yan Feifan rolled his eyes, grumbling, "This is sports, not a professional exam."
"Binhai University is full of hidden talent. Getting fifth place in a 5,000-meter race with sixty-two runners is already pretty impressive."
Just then, a basketball came rolling quickly across the ground toward Yan Feifan and Yu Suye.
As the ball reached him, Yan Feifan stuck out his foot and stopped it.
As it bounced up, he flicked it into the air with the top of his foot, sending it more than a meter high.
Yan Feifan reached out and caught the ball neatly.
The entire sequence was executed in one smooth motion. Even Yan Feifan himself was surprised at how effortlessly it went.
"Hey, thanks! Can you toss the ball over?"
Yan Feifan looked at the sweaty college student waving at him from about five meters away, then glanced at the basketball hoop seven or eight meters away. A sudden impulse stirred within him.
He recalled the shooting form he had learned in middle school, visually gauged the exact distance to the hoop, and ran through a few practice simulations in his mind’s eye.
Then, Yan Feifan settled into a standard shooting stance. After a few preparatory fakes, he noted the lack of wind and, with a SWISH, let the ball fly.
The ball traced a graceful, high arc through the air, hit the backboard with a THWACK, and then SWISHED through the net.
Yes! A long-range three-pointer, off the glass!
Yan Feifan pumped his fist in excitement.
"Feifan, you’re amazing!" Yu Suye’s eyes sparkled.
Yan Feifan said smugly, "It’s just a matter of hand-eye coordination, power, and angle. For a top surgeon, it’s nothing."
He might have sounded confident, but he had only been hoping to hit the backboard. An airball would have been mortifying. ’I guess when your luck is in, it’s really in.’
Just as Yan Feifan was reveling in his own cleverness, a vague idea suddenly flashed through his mind.
He tried to grasp it, but it slipped away like a shooting star, leaving not even a trace behind.
Yan Feifan suddenly felt a pang of anxiety...
