Chapter 746: Chapter 745: Exclusive Interview
As Yan Feifan racked his brain, trying to recall the fleeting spark of inspiration he’d just had, the short-haired boy who had waved and shouted at him moments ago strode over.
"So you’re a pro after all! That was amazing. Even a professional athlete would have a hard time making that long shot."
The short-haired student enthusiastically invited, "Hey man, come play a game with us. You can give us a few pointers while you’re at it."
Knowing his own limits, Yan Feifan smiled and declined, "You’re giving me too much credit."
"I don’t really know how to play basketball. That shot was just a blind squirrel finding a nut—pure luck."
The short-haired boy asked doubtfully, "Just luck?"
"But your shooting form looked pretty standard. You really don’t play much?"
"I really don’t. I just learned the basics in a basketball class. That shot was seriously just a lucky one."
Yan Feifan explained again, then added, "You guys go ahead and play. We just came over to watch."
After sending the boy on his way, Yan Feifan, Yu Suye, and Duan Yu continued to stand on the edge of the basketball court, watching them play.
However, Yan Feifan’s attention had now shifted entirely to his inner world, replaying the recent experience in hopes of recapturing that spark of inspiration through a mental reenactment.
But it was still no use.
Yan Feifan knew this sort of thing couldn’t be rushed.
He was sure that since the insight was triggered by something he experienced, it had become a part of him. It would definitely surface again at some point.
Realizing this, Yan Feifan stopped deliberately trying to remember and said to Yu Suye beside him, "Let’s head back. I’ll show you around campus during the day some other time."
"Okay! Okay!" Yu Suye replied cheerfully.
Just then, a girl with ear-length short hair, pulling a tall boy along, ran across the basketball court toward them.
"Mr. Yan, Mr. Yan..."
Hearing the shouts, Yan Feifan stopped and waited for the two to run up to them.
The short-haired girl took a couple of deep breaths, her voice filled with excitement. "Mr. Yan, I’m Zhong Xuan, a new clinical medicine student this year. I heard the report you gave during military training."
"Mr. Yan, you’re my idol!"
Yan Feifan couldn’t help but chuckle. "Hello, Zhong Xuan! I’m too young to be anyone’s idol."
He noticed her oversized T-shirt was soaked with sweat and clinging to her body.
"You really like playing basketball?"
Zhong Xuan gave an embarrassed grin and said, "My dad loves basketball. He’s been teaching me since I was little."
Yan Feifan said, "Oh," and then advised, "You should probably find a different sport. Basketball makes it easy to injure your finger joints and wrists."
"If you want to become an outstanding surgeon, you need a pair of incredibly nimble hands."
Zhong Xuan looked at her own hands, then turned to glance at the bustling basketball court before nodding firmly at Yan Feifan.
"Mr. Yan, I’ll listen to you."
She then asked cautiously, "Mr. Yan, can I observe your surgeries to learn?"
Yan Feifan replied softly, "Observing is fine, but you’ve only just started your clinical medicine studies. The most important thing right now is to master the theoretical knowledge and build a solid foundation."
After saying this, Yan Feifan’s gaze shifted to the boy Zhong Xuan had pulled over.
This boy was a few centimeters taller than Yan Feifan, with a long, handsome, oval face. He stood with his lips pressed together.
Yan Feifan felt the boy looked familiar, as if he’d seen him somewhere before, but he couldn’t quite place him.
He nodded at the guy, gave Zhong Xuan a wave, and then took Yu Suye’s hand, leaving the basketball court...
Zhong Xuan watched Yan Feifan’s retreating figure, then turned to the boy beside her.
"Yan Zhizhen, why didn’t you say a single word?"
"This was such a great chance to make a good impression! Mr. Yan isn’t arrogant at all."
"In the future, when we start our internships, maybe this chance meeting tonight could help us get a spot by Mr. Yan’s side."
Yan Zhizhen pulled his gaze away from Yan Feifan and said slowly, "I will become a great and famous doctor on my own merit."
He then added disparagingly, "Zhong Xuan, don’t be fooled by his kind face just now."
"Medical skill doesn’t equal medical ethics. From what I know, Yan Feifan is an incredibly hypocritical and selfish guy."
Zhong Xuan did not like hearing that.
"Yan Zhizhen, if you’re going to speak ill of someone, you need solid evidence. You can’t just spout nonsense."
"Do you have any proof?"
"..."
Yan Zhizhen hesitated for a moment before saying, "Anyway, I just know. He’s not as good as the rumors say."
"Otherwise, why would so much trouble keep happening to him over and over again?"
"Where there’s smoke, there’s fire..."
By the time Yan Feifan and the others returned to their place at Zuimo Court, it was already past nine-thirty.
As he was getting ready to wash up, he received a call from Tang Jun, the editor-in-chief of the Binhai Medical Journal.
"A special feature?"
Yan Feifan demurred, "Mr. Tang, is that really necessary? At my age, isn’t it a bit early for a special feature?"
Tang Jun said excitedly over the phone, "We don’t look at age, we look at achievements."
"Mr. Yan, the achievements you’ve made are more than enough to justify a special feature."
"To be honest, over the weekend, I already spoke with Director Jian Zhaokui, Dr. Deng Chunming, Director Lo Jun, Dr. Qin Ying, Vice President Chen Yu, and Director Qiu Ge from the Affiliated Hospital, and I’ve gathered quite a bit of information about you, Mr. Yan."
"If we add a special feature, our October issue of the journal could be a special edition all about you, Mr. Yan."
Yan Feifan laughed. "The October issue is just publishing one article of mine. How does that make it a special edition?"
Tang Jun laughed heartily. "The problem is, this one paper of yours is as thick as a regular monthly issue."
"This is the paper that has taken up the most page space in our journal’s history."
"So, a few of us editors discussed it and decided that since we’re already going this far, we might as well go all the way and do a personal feature on you."
"At the same time, we also decided to use one of your photos for the October cover."
"Mr. Yan, using a person’s photo for the cover—this is a first in our journal’s history, too."
Yan Feifan replied, both pleased and humble, "I’m deeply honored, truly! Mr. Tang, there’s no need to be so high-profile about it."
Tang Jun laughed heartily again. "Mr. Yan, this isn’t about being high-profile. It’s what you deserve."
"When you make such a huge achievement, you should receive this kind of treatment and acclaim."
After a pause, Tang Jun continued over the phone, "Mr. Liang said that the dual-lead-surgeon heart transplant method you developed not only shortens the surgery time by two hours, but also significantly improves the patient’s postoperative recovery."
"Mr. Liang pointed out that for the two surgeries completed using your method, all the monitored stats—for both the transplanted heart and the patients themselves—were much better than those of other heart transplant patients from the same period."
"Mr. Liang’s analysis is that, conservatively, it should be possible to reduce the critical monitoring period for heart transplant patients from the original thirty days down to twenty."
"For the patients, this means a real reduction of tens of thousands in postoperative care costs."
"Mr. Yan, this achievement of yours is a real blessing for the vast number of heart transplant patients."
Yan Feifan said cautiously, "The postoperative recovery results still need to be verified over more time."
Tang Jun laughed. "I know Mr. Liang. He wouldn’t say something if he wasn’t sure about it."
"Besides, as doctors become more proficient with the new surgical method, and as the method itself is further refined and improved, the benefits it brings to patients will only increase."
Tang Jun then asked, "So, Mr. Yan, when would be a good time for you for this special feature?"
