Chapter 750: Chapter 749: Burden Reduction Meeting
"Ah, 37.7! Feifan, you have a fever!"
The result didn’t surprise Yan Feifan. He’d woken up this morning feeling heavy and weak, with a dull ache in his head.
Yan Feifan took the digital thermometer from Yu Suye’s hand, glanced at it, and said nonchalantly, "It’s just a low-grade fever, Su Ye. No need to be so surprised, right?"
"I haven’t had a fever in months. It’s normal to get one when the weather turns from summer to autumn."
"Think of it as my body disinfecting itself, burning off all the bacteria and viruses that have built up recently."
Yu Suye, however, looked as if she were facing a major crisis. She took Yan Feifan by the arm and guided him to the living room sofa.
"Feifan, you’re practically a national treasure right now. We can’t afford to be careless."
"You need to rest at home. I’ll call the hospital and ask for leave on your behalf."
Yan Feifan chuckled. "The walking wounded don’t leave the front lines. This is just a low-grade fever; I don’t need to stay home."
"Feifan, you’re not actually thinking of performing surgery while you’re sick, are you?"
After trying to persuade him, Yu Suye resorted to a threat. "Or maybe I should call my sister and tell her you have a fever?"
Yan Feifan immediately shook his head. "No, no, it’s just a low-grade fever. There’s no need to tell her."
’He knew his sister was prone to making a mountain out of a molehill.’
If she found out he had a fever, she would very likely drag him to the hospital for a full check-up.
Yan Feifan made an instant decision. "I’ll rest at home!"
He sighed. "According to the schedule, I was supposed to perform nerve-splitting surgery on the second batch of volunteers for the in-vivo nerve cultivation study today."
Yu Suye brought him a cup of steaming hot water. "Put work aside for now and focus on getting better. Otherwise, you’ll just have more and more work piling up."
’He knew Su Ye had a point.’
Much of his work required delicate and precise movements. A fever would affect his perception and control, so surgery was definitely out of the question...
In order to recover as quickly as possible, Yan Feifan, who had lost his appetite, forced himself to eat more for breakfast.
After the meal, he was sent up to the attic to rest by Yu Suye.
"Feifan, your bedroom must be a den of germs by now. The attic has better ventilation and a nice view, plus its own bathroom..."
Yan Feifan flopped onto the bed, pulled the blanket over himself, and cut her off. "Alright, I’m a very capable doctor. I know how to take care of myself."
"You should hurry up and get to the hospital for work!"
Yu Suye straightened the blanket on him, then gave instructions to Duan Yu, who was standing nearby.
"Keep a close eye on Feifan. Don’t let him do whatever he wants. Make sure he drinks plenty of water and gets lots of rest."
"Take his temperature every hour."
"If it goes above 38 degrees, give him some fever reducer."
"If it goes above 39, take him to the hospital!"
Duan Yu replied with a solemn expression, "Dr. Yu, don’t worry. I will supervise and take good care of Mr. Yan..."
After Yu Suye left, Yan Feifan tried to grab a medical journal to read, but Duan Yu stopped him.
"Mr. Yan, you need to rest!"
He picked up his phone, intending to check his email, but Duan Yu confiscated that as well.
Unable to do anything, Yan Feifan had no choice but to lie in bed and try to sleep.
But just when he truly wanted to rest, abstract geometric shapes started shifting and morphing endlessly in his mind. A restless discomfort filled his body, making it difficult to fall into a peaceful sleep...
At 10:51 in the morning, Liang Qing, the Deputy Dean of Medical Affairs who had been notified of an urgent meeting, arrived at the small conference room in the main administration building to find it already filled with people.
There was Deputy Dean Mr. Chen, Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery Dr. Liang Zhao Kui, Head of Neurosurgery Dr. Qiu Ge, Head of Neurology Lo Jun, as well as Dr. Wang Chuan, Dr. Qin Ying, and Mr. Shi from Yan Feifan’s medical research lab, among others.
Liang Qing greeted each of them before taking an empty seat next to Mr. Chen.
He leaned closer to Mr. Chen and asked softly, "Mr. Chen, seeing Mr. Shi here, I’m guessing everyone in this room has some connection to Yan Feifan."
"Is this emergency meeting to discuss something related to Dr. Yan...?"
Before Liang Qing could finish, the conference room door opened again, and Party Secretary Liu Jin walked in with Hospital Director Hou Jianfeng.
Liu Jin walked to the head of the table but remained standing, his serious gaze sweeping over everyone present.
"Everyone’s here. You’re all busy people, so I’ll get straight to the point."
"I assume you’re all aware that Yan Feifan has taken sick leave due to a fever?"
Liu Jin paused, taking in the reactions from the attendees—some nodded, some looked concerned, others surprised.
"I’m guessing some of you are thinking that a cold and a fever are common ailments, and that calling a meeting like this is making too big a deal out of that kid, Yan Feifan."
Liu Jin scanned the room again and said slowly, "I admit I might be overreacting, but that fellow Yan Feifan is worth it."
"Especially after what I’ve discovered..."
As he spoke, Liu Jin began distributing a dozen or so A4 pages to the attendees. "Feifan’s body has never fully recovered. That Old Master from the Yu Family of Jingcheng, the National Medical Master we’ve all heard of, took Feifan’s pulse."
"He said that Feifan’s body is not just severely depleted, but that he’s also suffering from extreme physical and mental exhaustion. He’s in serious danger of burning out completely."
"I assume you’ve all heard of the famous ’Feifan’s Contemplation,’ haven’t you?"
"We previously made a conscious effort to reduce Feifan’s workload to give him more time to rest and recuperate."
"But..."
Liu Jin said with a pained expression, "What you’re holding are Feifan’s work logs from the past month, which I had someone compile."
"Look them over and ask yourselves if you’ve been working as tirelessly as Feifan has this past month."
Liang Qing quickly glanced over the work logs, which were printed in a table format, but he was somewhat unimpressed.
’What young doctor at the hospital didn’t work from before sunrise to after sunset?’
Yan Feifan, at least, got to rest for at least one day a week and even had time to go on a trip to Qiandao Lake.
Even Liang Qing himself hadn’t had a single full weekend off since he started, all in the name of familiarizing himself with the work at the Affiliated Hospital.
These were just Liang Qing’s private thoughts, and he kept his expression neutral.
Liu Jin’s voice continued, "Feifan’s workload, far from decreasing, has actually been trending upwards."
"I’ve called you all here to discuss how to lighten Feifan’s burden."
"I don’t think any of you want to see him collapse at his post one day, do you?"
After a moment of silence, Lo Jun was the first to speak. "We’ll handle the in-vivo nerve cultivation study ourselves. We won’t trouble Feifan with it anymore."
"However, for the cervical spine tumor surgeries, the patient queue is already booked through the end of the year. We can’t just cancel them."
Qiu Ge immediately followed up, "The clinical human trials for the infrasound-based awakening study have already begun. Dr. Yan’s workload for it isn’t large, but it’s crucial. We can’t stop it."
She then suggested, "What about Dr. Yan’s collaboration with Mr. Vega, and the ones with Baining Hospital and the PLA General Hospital?"
"Secretary, those three external collaborations are taking up a huge amount of Dr. Yan’s time and energy."
Liu Jin sighed. "We have signed agreements for all three collaborations. It’s not easy to just suspend them."
He paused, then said in a heavy tone, "I also noticed that Feifan participated in the rescue of that accident victim yesterday."
"From now on, no emergency treatment cases of this kind are to be assigned to Feifan. None at all."
Liang Qing couldn’t help but ask, "Secretary, what if we encounter a critically ill patient who can only be saved by Dr. Yan?"
Liu Jin said coldly, "Does the world stop turning without Feifan? He’s only been back at work for a little over six months since he woke up."
"We’ll do things the way we’ve always done them at this hospital!"
Just then, Ren Zhen, the Director of the Secretary’s Office, pushed the door open and reported, "Secretary, we just received news."
"Mr. Yan’s temperature has risen to thirty-nine degrees. He’s on his way to the hospital now..."
