Chapter 751: Chapter 750: No Longer Your Own
Yan Feifan felt himself suspended between sleep and wakefulness, between dream and reality. Every part of his body ached, yet the discomfort didn’t feel entirely real.
He wanted to move, to find a more comfortable position, but his consciousness seemed to have detached from his body, floating weightlessly in the air, leaving him unable to even lift a finger.
Not only that, but chaotic and fantastical images kept uncontrollably appearing in his mind.
Faintly, Yan Feifan thought he could hear someone calling his name.
His body and mind in agony, he didn’t want to—and didn’t have the strength to—respond...
An unknown amount of time passed before Yan Feifan smelled the strong scent of alcohol. At the same time, he felt a coldness, which, strangely, made his body feel a little better.
But the ever-thickening smell of alcohol only made his thoughts more chaotic...
As if a single moment—or perhaps a thousand years—had passed, Yan Feifan finally felt the tangible sensation of his soul and body reuniting as one.
He opened his eyes.
The first things he saw were light-blue walls, a white ceiling, and white sheets and a duvet cover...
’This is a hospital!’
Having reached this conclusion, Yan Feifan tried to move, and a pang of pain shot through his left hand.
He turned his head and saw an IV needle inserted into a vein on the back of his left hand.
"Feifan, you’re awake! How are you feeling?"
Yan Feifan followed the sound of the voice and saw his sister hurrying to his bedside.
He was about to speak but found his throat was dry and sore, making it difficult to get any words out...
A few dozen seconds later, Yan Feifan, now realizing he was in a private deluxe hospital room, leaned back against the head of the bed, which had been raised to a thirty-degree angle. He took a couple more sips of water to moisten his throat and carefully took stock of the soreness in his limbs.
"Sis, was my fever really bad this time?"
Yan Ziruo sat on the edge of the bed, took the cup her brother handed her, and said, "Bad? It was downright dangerous."
"By the time we got to the hospital, you were completely unconscious, and your temperature was over forty degrees."
"The doctors and nurses didn’t even have time to give you a fever-reducing shot. They had to immediately start sponging you down with alcohol for physical cooling."
"After that, your temperature stayed high, hovering around thirty-nine degrees for three or four hours. It just wouldn’t come down."
As she said this, Yan Ziruo added, her voice laced with lingering fear, "But thank heavens, your temperature finally dropped to thirty-eight degrees."
After a pause, Yan Ziruo suddenly asked, "Feifan, what’s 127 times 43?"
"Answer quickly! Five, four, three..."
"5461."
After Yan Feifan answered, he saw his sister pat her chest and let out a long sigh of relief. She said cheerfully, "Good, good. Your brain didn’t get fried."
"Now I can finally relax."
Yan Feifan couldn’t help but roll his eyes. Only then did he notice the clock on the opposite wall, which read 7:39 in the evening.
He couldn’t help but sigh. "Time flies. I close my eyes, and when I open them again, morning has turned to night."
Yan Ziruo huffed twice, then suddenly asked, "Feifan, it’s more than just nighttime. Guess what day of the week it is."
Yan Feifan froze.
He studied his sister, who was staring back without blinking, trying her best to maintain a serious expression. He scoffed lightly.
"Sis, don’t try to scare me. It’s Tuesday night. If I’d been unconscious for that long, your eyes would be completely bloodshot by now."
He then asked, "Where are Su Ye and Duan Yu?"
"They went back to Zuimo Court to eat."
Yan Ziruo replied, then chuckled softly. "Hmph, couldn’t fool you. I guess your brain really is fine."
"Feifan..."
Yan Ziruo suddenly reached out and pinched his ear, saying with a very serious expression, "Feifan, can you promise me you won’t scare your big sister like this again?"
"Several internal medicine specialists held a consultation and said that if your fever couldn’t be controlled, it could have easily damaged your brain."
Yan Feifan chuckled. "Sis, I’m not a kid. My body is battle-hardened, and my immune system is strong. It’s not that easy to fry my brain."
Yan Ziruo gave her brother’s ear a sharp twist and said huffily, "Strong immune system, my ass!"
"When normal people get a cold and a fever, it’s usually around thirty-eight degrees. They tough it out, rest up, and maybe take some medicine a few times, and they’re fine."
"But look at you! A forty-degree fever and a coma, and you still have the nerve to say your immune system is strong!"
Yan Feifan gave a sheepish laugh and changed the subject. "Sis, did anything happen today?"
Yan Ziruo let go of her brother’s ear. "You being in a coma with a high fever was the biggest thing to happen at the hospital."
"In the colleague group chat, hundreds of people were sending you get-well wishes one after another in a chain message."
She then exclaimed, "Hey, since you’re awake, let me take a video of you to post in the work group and respond to them."
Next, Yan Feifan neatened up his appearance.
Yan Ziruo filmed a short video of him, just over ten seconds long, saying, "I’m awake and recovering now. Thanks for your concern."
Not long after the video was sent, Yan Feifan’s hospital room became a very lively place.
First, the attending physician in charge of Yan Feifan’s treatment came over to give him a physical examination.
After that came a constant stream of visitors, most of whom were hospital staff.
It got so busy that he and his sister didn’t even have a chance to eat the dinner that Yu Suye and Duan Yu had brought for them from home.
It wasn’t until Liu Jin arrived, scowling and losing his temper, that the tide of visitors came to an abrupt halt as he drove everyone out.
"Feifan, this high fever of yours is a major warning sign! For us, and for you."
Liu Jin said with a pained expression, "It means we failed in our duties. We let your workload become excessive again."
"The hospital has already notified the PLA General Hospital and Baining Hospital about your illness and has requested to renegotiate the terms of our future collaborations."
"The hospital will also do everything possible to reduce your future workload."
Yan Feifan said softly, "Teacher, isn’t this making a mountain out of a molehill? It was just a fever."
Seeing his sister about to glare at him, Yan Feifan quickly added, "Even though it was a high fever of forty degrees, this was an isolated incident."
"Besides, getting a cold and fever a few times a year is perfectly normal."
Liu Jin said in a grave voice, "A cold and a fever are normal. A fever of forty degrees is not."
"Feifan, you’re still young. You have your whole life ahead of you. There’s no need to work yourself to death."
"We can discuss other things later. For now, you must focus on making a full recovery."
Before Yan Feifan could respond, Liu Jin continued, "Feifan, you need to understand that your health is no longer just your own concern."
"This is the hospital’s decision. You just need to comply!"
After seeing Liu Jin off, Yan Feifan started to eat his dinner.
He was still running a low-grade fever, and his mouth felt bland. He didn’t have much of an appetite, even for the special invalid’s meal that Si Lan had prepared for him.
But when he remembered that his health was no longer his own concern, Yan Feifan’s sense of duty soared.
For the sake of a speedy recovery and to continue striving for the cause of medicine, he resolutely ate every last bite of his food.
After dinner, Yu Suye hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Feifan, I got a call this afternoon from the director of neurosurgery at Baining Hospital. He hopes you won’t cancel the collaboration with them."
"He said that if your surgical schedule really has to be reduced, Baining Hospital will definitely be the one that gets cut."
"It’s just that Baining Hospital’s patients are also scheduled out to the end of the year. Even the patient with the shortest wait has been waiting for two or three months."
"If so many scheduled surgeries are suddenly canceled, the patients are very likely to have an outburst."
Yan Feifan said pensively, "Su Ye, I’ll find a way to properly handle the situation with these patients who have been waiting for so long..."
