Overpowered Resident Doctor

Chapter 784: Confidence and Vision

Yan Feifan didn’t get to eat his dinner until after midnight, once he returned to his home in Zuimo Court.

The condition of the brain tumor patient brought by Mr. Vega took a sudden turn, forcing them to perform the surgery ahead of schedule and keeping Yan Feifan incredibly busy.

Fortunately, the puncture and injection surgery went relatively smoothly. Mr. Vega’s skills were top-tier as well.

The two of them worked together seamlessly, taking turns and pulling the patient back from the brink of death.

So when Yan Feifan woke up the next morning and saw a message from Mr. Vega that read “Surgery successful,” he was especially happy.

‘Last night’s effort wasn’t wasted!’

Waking up, washing up, morning exercise, breakfast. Despite waking up over an hour later than usual, Yan Feifan started his new Thursday step by step, just like any other day.

Around nine in the morning, Yan Feifan arrived at his office in the Little Red House at the Affiliated Hospital and was surprised to find Mr. Deng Chunming from the cardiac surgery department waiting for him.

“Mr. Deng, what’s up?”

Deng Chunming didn’t respond, merely pointing to the medical images spread across the light box on the wall.

Yan Feifan glanced up and saw 4D color Doppler ultrasound images, angiograms, chest X-rays, and cardiac CT scans of a malformed heart.

The heart was interesting. It looked as if someone had grabbed it by both ends and twisted it forty or fifty degrees, causing its ventricles, atria, and major blood vessels to become distorted.

These heart defects were like nature’s uncanny works of art; no two were ever exactly alike, always managing to defy a doctor’s imagination.

Yan Feifan studied the images for a moment. In his mind’s eye, a lifelike, child’s-fist-sized heart habitually appeared, beating rhythmically.

“Mr. Deng, how old is the child?”

“Nine years old. A boy from the countryside. Very sensible.”

Deng Chunming sighed softly and said slowly, “I admitted him on Monday. Last night, when the boy learned that the surgery was expensive—at least three or four hundred thousand—and very risky, he took the initiative to refuse treatment and said he wanted to go home.”

“Feifan, your public welfare fund… could it?”

Yan Feifan couldn’t help but shake his head and chuckle. “Mr. Deng, you just came here to fleece me, didn’t you?”

After a pause, he added softly, “Have the child’s parents submit the application materials. The necessary review and verification still need to be done.”

Deng Chunming let out a chuckle. “I knew you’d agree. I’ll go back and give them the good news right now.”

“Hey, you should prepare for this surgery too. I’m planning to schedule it for next Friday…”

After seeing Mr. Deng off, Yan Feifan thought back to the financial statements for the Extraordinary Public Welfare Fund he had reviewed just two days ago and scratched his head.

Although there was still over fifty-one million in the fund’s account—a number that seemed quite large—the rate of expenditure was equally astounding.

Over at the Armed Police General Hospital, the two weekly reconstructive surgeries for children with deformities and disabilities from the welfare home, plus post-operative rehabilitation costs, amounted to an expenditure of two hundred to three hundred thousand per week.

Here at the Affiliated Hospital, it was even more.

Lin Qian and Qi Xiuping were already capable of performing some of the more difficult facial reconstructive surgeries for injuries or deformities.

The limb reconstruction surgeries for welfare home children selected by Yu Suye had already reached the level of major operations.

As for the pro-bono reconstructive surgeries performed by Wang Chuan, they were pushing the limits of his own abilities time and time again.

For the past few weeks, the various fees the public welfare fund paid to the Affiliated Hospital for these guys had never been less than a million per week.

At this rate, the fifty-million-plus fund would be depleted in less than a year.

‘And I still have my five students to look after,’ Yan Feifan thought. ‘They need to keep improving through hands-on surgical experience.’

But in the current situation, cutting back on expenses was unlikely. The only option was to find new sources of funding.

Yan Feifan pondered. The best solution would be to contact one or two large corporations and secure fixed annual donations from them.

He already knew that large corporate groups had a certain budget for external charitable donations each year to demonstrate their social responsibility.

The question was, how to contact them and persuade them?

Yan Feifan thought about it for only a moment before his head started to ache.

This wasn’t his area of expertise.

Yan Feifan made a wise decision: he would delegate this problem. Wang Chuan, Lin Qian, Qi Xiuping, and the others couldn’t just reap the benefits without contributing, could they?

He glanced at the clock on the wall. It was ten past nine. Time to prepare for Qin Feng’s patient’s surgery…

「Around half past ten in the morning, Ji Meng, with a heart full of anticipation and anxiety, walked into the Zhengxin Law Firm on Zhongshan East Road.」

In a small meeting room, she waited for four or five minutes before a man in his forties walked in. He was dressed in a suit and tie, with a square face and a neat, short haircut.

The man handed Ji Meng a contract directly.

“Miss Ji, I am Jiang Jie, the representative lawyer for Mr. Yan Feifan of Bin University Affiliated Hospital.”

“These are the terms of cooperation proposed by Mr. Yan. If you have no objections, please sign it.”

Ji Meng took the contract and quickly flipped through it.

The contract was only seven pages long. Scanning ten lines at a glance, Ji Meng read through it in two or three minutes.

After the first pass, she read it over again from the beginning, in some disbelief.

“Five million?!”

Hearing the doubt in her voice, Jiang Jie said in a serious tone, “Miss Ji, Mr. Yan’s current fee for a single cosmetic surgery starts at a minimum of three to four million.”

“You are receiving this on credit, with no collateral. For Mr. Yan to ask for five million is already very restrained.”

Ji Meng quickly explained, “Mr. Jiang, please don’t misunderstand. I’m not questioning that it’s too much, but that it’s too little.”

“To be honest with you, before I came, I thought Mr. Yan’s condition might be a lifetime share of my earnings.”

“Thirty percent, or fifty?”

Ji Meng smiled and said, “What surprised me is that Mr. Yan only proposed a specific figure of five million.”

“Is this because Mr. Yan has no confidence in me, or none in himself?”

Jiang Jie gave a faint smile. “Miss Ji, this isn’t a matter of confidence. As I said, Mr. Yan is a man of restraint.”

“He has his principles. He only accepts reasonable compensation and won’t take the opportunity to make an exorbitant demand.”

“Miss Ji, do you have any objections to the terms of cooperation in the contract?”

Ji Meng shook her head. “Mr. Yan’s price is lower than I expected, the terms are quite reasonable, and it even takes my potential special circumstances into account. If I still had objections, I would be far too ungrateful.”

“Mr. Jiang, I’ll sign!”

The contract stipulated that the total cost of the surgery and other fees was five million, to be paid off within three years, starting three months after the surgery.

During the repayment period, if Ji Meng’s annual income was less than two hundred thousand, she would not have to make a payment for that year.

For the portion of her annual income exceeding two hundred thousand, she must use no less than thirty percent of it to repay the surgical fees.

For any outstanding debt remaining after three years, an additional ten percent interest would be added for each extra year, compounding annually.

If, after ten years, the debt was still not fully repaid, the contract would automatically terminate—and the debt considered paid in full—provided that Ji Meng’s average annual income over the decade remained at a low level recognized by Yan Feifan and she had consistently made payments as per the agreement.

Ji Meng used her own pen to sign her name on the contract, crisply and decisively.

She handed the contract to Mr. Jiang, only to see him pull out another contract, this time with a friendly expression on his face.

“Miss Ji, I have faith in Mr. Yan, and I have faith in you.”

“On your path to success, if you have a capable law firm to help you avoid pitfalls and protect your interests, your journey will surely be much smoother.”

“Wouldn’t you agree, Miss Ji?”

Ji Meng met Jiang Jie’s gaze and suddenly broke into a brilliant smile.

“I trust Mr. Yan’s judgment…”
