Chapter 1704 - 14: Yun Boss and Little Cousin Extra (Part 2)

Chapter 1704: Chapter 14: Yun Boss and Little Cousin Extra (Part 2)

This also showed that even though he had a good relationship with the Jing Family, he’d never thought of relying on them for everything. Handling things with his own ability—that was something all the elders really appreciated.

"Apartments in Beijing aren’t cheap, you know." Fan Mingjue said bluntly.

"I’ve had performances over the years, so I’ve managed to save a bit." Yun Hezhi answered tactfully.

Jiang Jinsang sat there calmly sipping tea and watching the show. He was a hugely popular lead actor; God knows how many people wanted to poach him for their own Peach Garden troupe. The Jing Family probably had to offer him quite a lot to keep him on. After all...

They were not a family that was short of money.

...

Fan Zhengyu had originally thought that meeting the parents would be terrifying, but the atmosphere turned out to be pretty good.

They ate and chatted, asked a few simple questions about the two of them dating, about Yun Hezhi’s family situation and his work schedule, future plans and so on. It wasn’t nearly as scary as Fan Zhengyu had imagined.

After dinner, Fan Mingyu even took the initiative to help Yun Hezhi out: "You drove here too, right? In a bit, you can take Zhengyu and the others home. That shouldn’t be a problem, should it?"

"No problem." Yun Hezhi could feel the goodwill in Fan Mingyu’s words—this was clearly giving him a chance to show himself, so of course he had to grab it.

All in all, this meal ended with host and guests both happy.

Although Fan Mingjue knew the two of them had been dating right under his nose for so long, saying he was angry that they hid it well and had guts... it was more accurate to say that he’d been too careless. They’d been together for over a year and he hadn’t noticed at all.

Still, this young man Yun Hezhi wasn’t bad. For a first meeting, his performance didn’t leave much to nitpick.

He’d just have to keep observing from here on out.

So this parent-meeting seemed to have wrapped up nicely in a warm family-comedy sort of way.

Only Jiang Jinsang was feeling depressed...

Why was everyone else so happy, while he, the one truly on the sidelines eating melon seeds, ended up feeling like his own house had collapsed?

**

The old Master Fan was discharged smoothly, the parent-meeting had gone great, so Fan Zhengyu was pretty happy. It was just that, in private, her parents asked her about often going over to Yun Hezhi’s place, mooching off his food and drink, and gave her a good "scolding."

"You’re running to his place every day, and you’re a girl, don’t you know how to be shy? You even make him cook for you?" Fan Mingjue was stifled, "That kid can cook?"

"Boss Yun’s cooking is actually really good."

"How good can it possibly be."

"..."

Once they heard that their daughter often went over to freeload meals, and that Yun Hezhi lived alone, the Fan Family thought they should invite him over for dinner sometime. Fan Zhengyu said she’d arrange it.

But ever since Fan Mingjue found out the two of them were dating, and that the two families lived close by, he just couldn’t sit still. He often wandered around near Yun Hezhi’s place, clearly wanting to secretly observe him.

And that’s how he ended up causing a ridiculous misunderstanding.

It was a Saturday night, Fan Mingjue had the next day off, and Fan Zhengyu was at the troupe rehearsing. When he heard that Yun Hezhi was home alone, he used going out for a walk as an excuse and started pacing around near Yun Hezhi’s courtyard.

As luck would have it, Zheng Lansheng happened to show up that day.

His sister-in-law wasn’t around for once, so Zheng Lansheng had come specifically to bum a meal. And then he saw a sneaky-looking figure hanging around outside Yun Hezhi’s courtyard.

Originally he hadn’t paid much attention, but when that person saw him coming, he actually tried to hide. That immediately made Zheng Lansheng suspicious.

Could it be a reporter?

After Yun Hezhi got popular, quite a few reporters tried to track down where he lived. Luckily, he wasn’t a full-on celebrity, so the reporters didn’t go to insane lengths.

After Zheng Lansheng pushed the door open and went in, he told Yun Hezhi, "Bro, there’s someone near your place sneaking around. He looks shady as hell."

"Are you sure you didn’t see wrong?" Yun Hezhi had lived here for years and had never even encountered a thief.

"I’m worried he might be a reporter or something. How about I go out and chase him off for you?"

"I’m not some big star, what about me is worth them staking out? Let them be."

Yun Hezhi had been in a pretty good mood lately, because Fan Zhengyu said she’d be taking him home for dinner in a few days. If the Fan Family was willing to let him through their door, that meant they were at least somewhat satisfied with him.

He didn’t care, but Zheng Lansheng had the kind of personality that couldn’t sit still. He peeped through the crack in the door and saw that guy still wandering around outside.

Anyway, Yun Hezhi was busy cooking, and he was bored, so he decided he might as well go chase the guy off.

Zheng Lansheng waited for the right moment, opened the door, and ran straight into Fan Mingjue.

Fan Mingjue had been planning to head home, but was suddenly blocked: "Uncle, you’ve got the guts to come spying, so why are you trying to run?"

"I..."

For the first time in his life, Fan Mingjue got "caught."

Normally he was the one catching students. Now look at that.

"I’m not, you’ve misunderstood." Fan Mingjue coughed awkwardly.

"I’ve watched you hang around here for ages. If you’re not here to spy, then what are you doing?"

"I... I live nearby. See? Right over there, that’s my house!" Fan Mingjue pointed at a courtyard across the river.

One look and Zheng Lansheng burst out laughing!

Wasn’t that his little sister-in-law’s place?

This peeping tom was really something. Of all the places he could point to, he picked his little sister-in-law’s house and tried to pass it off as his own. Too ridiculous.

"You really think I don’t know the people who live there? If you’re going to lie, at least make it sound like something."

"You know the people there?" Fan Mingjue was a bit stunned.

"Don’t play dumb with me."

...

These old courtyards aren’t exactly soundproof, and Zheng Lansheng’s opera-trained voice was clear and bright. Hearing the commotion, Yun Hezhi came out to check.

He found Zheng Lansheng holding onto Fan Mingjue and refusing to let him go, and it felt like a bolt of lightning had hit out of a clear sky.

Was this kid trying to get him killed?

"Lansheng, what are you doing?" Yun Hezhi wasn’t afraid of Fan Mingjue himself, but the man was Fan Zhengyu’s father—his future father-in-law. Of course he had to be respectful and eager to please.

"Bro, you’re just in time. This uncle has been sneaking around near your place and lying through his teeth. He’s already that old and still out here taking secret photos..."

"Stop talking!" Yun Hezhi cut him off sharply.

"Bro, you’re snapping at me?"

Yun Hezhi practically wanted to kick him into his own arms to shut him up, but he didn’t have the time. He looked at Fan Mingjue and said, "Uncle, long time no see."

Zheng Lansheng had rarely seen Yun Hezhi look so eager to please. The man’s bones were usually all pride and defiance—he didn’t even give the Jing Family’s Sixth Master much face. The uncle in front of him, aside from having a slightly fierce look, didn’t seem particularly special. Did his brother really need to be this deferential?

"Uncle, how come you..."

"Just passing by!" Fan Mingjue hadn’t expected to be caught wandering around, and he was feeling a bit embarrassed too.

"Would you like to come in and sit for a bit?"

Fan Mingjue hadn’t planned on going in, but it was a rare opportunity and he did want to get a better read on Yun Hezhi, so he nodded and agreed.

Yun Hezhi led Fan Mingjue inside, leaving Zheng Lansheng standing there blankly, watching their backs. Then he glanced at the courtyard across the river, sized up Fan Mingjue’s age, and his mind suddenly exploded—

Could this be... his little sister-in-law’s father!

OMG!

Could he just go die now?

And soon after, when he heard from Yun Hezhi that this was indeed Fan Zhengyu’s father, he felt like he’d been struck by lightning.

Did he and the Fan Family just have clashing fate or something? The first time he met his little sister-in-law, he offended her. And now, he’d offended her dad too. Wasn’t this fatal?

...

Since Fan Mingjue was already there and it was dinnertime, of course Yun Hezhi invited him to stay and eat. Normally, he barely drank at all to protect his voice, but tonight he deliberately had a couple of glasses to keep him company.

Between men, I guess after a few drinks, you can talk about anything.

Meanwhile, Fan Mom was a bit speechless—he’d said he was going out for a walk, but ended up eating dinner at someone else’s house. At his age, he really had no shame.

But when Fan Zhengyu heard about it, she almost died laughing.

Her dad had always been the one catching others. Guess the tables really turned today.

In the end, Fan Mingjue had set out to "observe the enemy and gather intel," but what actually happened was he ate a meal at the guy’s house, drank some wine, left feeling light-bodied and light-headed, and in the end the only thing he clearly remembered was...

Yun Hezhi’s cooking was actually pretty good.
