Chapter 637: Chapter 635: Refusal to Admit
Mrs. Wu was beside herself with regret, because the decision to adopt Wu Qiao Ping had been her idea in the first place.
Back then, Wu Qiao Ping had only been two or three when she lost both her parents. Mrs. Wu’s heart had ached for the little girl. She’d also thought that since she only had one daughter, adopting another would give them both a companion for the future. But how could she have possibly known that that long-ago decision would one day lead to the death of her own biological daughter?
"It was me. I’m the one who got Xiao Yun killed." Mrs. Wu wasn’t just filled with regret, but with unbearable self-blame, unable to accept the outcome. "The one who should be dead is me!"
Mr. Wu couldn’t stop the tears from flowing either. He clenched his jaw, and after a long moment, he spoke in a hoarse voice, "What we need to do now is get revenge for Xiao Yun. A life for a life. Xiao Yun is gone, but we have to pull ourselves together so she can rest in peace."
Hearing this, Mrs. Wu snapped her head up to look at her husband. "Where is Wu Qiao Ping now?"
"She should still be on her way back to Beijing," Mr. Wu said. "The matter of her harming Xiao Yun was exposed in Maqu County. The police there notified the authorities here in Beijing. The Beijing police should have reached Maqu County by now. I expect she’ll arrive in Beijing in a couple of days."
Mrs. Wu’s eyes were red as she wept. "How could that monster be so heartless? She killed Xiao Yun all those years ago and made it look like she slipped and fell from a cliff. Did she feel no guilt at all? All these years, in front of us, she never let her mask slip for even a second. And I actually poured all my love onto her. Thinking about it... I’ve failed Xiao Yun so badly. If her spirit is watching from the afterlife, she must be heartbroken."
Mr. Wu let out a deep sigh. He was right. For all these years, he and his wife had been so good to Xiao Yun’s murderer. The thought alone was enough to give them a heart attack.
The couple was consumed by grief, wishing Wu Qiao Ping were right there in front of them so they could avenge their daughter immediately.
「Two days later.」
The Wus finally saw Wu Qiao Ping in an interrogation room at the Beijing Public Security Bureau.
"Dad, Mom, you have to save me! Save me!" Seeing Mr. and Mrs. Wu, Wu Qiao Ping cried and pleaded with them. "I’ve been framed! I didn’t hurt my sister! Please, save me! I’m the only daughter you have left!"
Mrs. Wu’s eyes blazed with fire as she looked at Wu Qiao Ping. She shot to her feet, rushed in front of Wu Qiao Ping, and slapped her hard across the face. "I’ll kill you, you monster!"
Caught off guard by the slap, a flash of anger crossed Wu Qiao Ping’s eyes before she immediately started crying again. "Mom, why don’t you believe me? I really didn’t hurt my sister."
Overwhelmed with hatred, Mrs. Wu slapped Wu Qiao Ping hard again without another word.
Just then, a police officer stepped forward and took Mrs. Wu by the arm. "No disturbances during the visit. Please take your seat."
"I’m sorry, my wife is a little emotional," Mr. Wu said quickly to the officer. He then pulled his wife’s arm, guiding her to sit beside him. The two of them faced Wu Qiao Ping from across the table.
Mr. Wu’s eyes were filled with deep pain. Wu Qiao Ping’s case had already undergone a preliminary hearing in Maqu County. Although Wu Qiao Ping insisted she was innocent, the testimony of the three men made it impossible for her to clear her name. When Mr. and Mrs. Wu had arrived at the Public Security Bureau today, the officer in charge of the case had already briefed them on the initial findings. They never could have imagined that the reason Wu Qiao Ping had harmed their daughter was because of their plan to set Wu Qiaoyun up on a blind date with Zheng Lin.
But back then, the whole thing had just been an initial idea. They hadn’t even had a chance to mention it to either of their daughters, let alone find out if Xiao Yun was even willing to meet Zheng Lin.
He looked intently at the daughter he had cherished for nearly twenty years, still finding it impossible to believe. Could she really have committed such a cruel act against the sister she spent every day with, all over something that wasn’t even certain?
"Why?" Mr. Wu asked, looking at Wu Qiao Ping after calming his distraught wife.
Wu Qiao Ping’s lips trembled as tears streamed down her face. "Dad, I didn’t. I really didn’t. You have to believe me."
"Don’t call me Dad," Mr. Wu said through gritted teeth. "I don’t have a daughter like you."
Hearing Mr. Wu’s words, Wu Qiao Ping looked as if she had been dealt a heavy blow. She swayed in her seat, staring at him in disbelief. "Dad, are you disowning me?"
"Tell me, why did you kill Xiao Yun? Was it really because of the blind date with the Zheng family?" Mr. Wu continued to question her. "You don’t have to put on that face for me. There are witnesses. Have you forgotten? Someone saw you when you killed Xiao Yun."
"They’re framing me." Wu Qiao Ping denied it to the death. ’I’ve thought this through very clearly,’ she reasoned internally. ’My plan back then was practically flawless. Otherwise, the police wouldn’t have ruled Wu Qiaoyun’s death an accidental fall from a cliff. If those three men hadn’t happened to see it, no one would ever have known that I killed her.’
’Right now, all the police have is the testimony of those three men. As for anything else, there can’t be any other evidence. As long as I refuse to admit I did it, I might be able to escape punishment.’
"You refuse to admit it?" Mr. Wu stared intently at Wu Qiao Ping as a chill crept through him. He was certain now—it had to have been Wu Qiao Ping who harmed Xiao Yun. Before Xiao Yun’s death, the matter of the blind date with the Zheng family was something only he and his wife had discussed privately at home. They hadn’t mentioned it to the Zheng family, nor had they brought it up with their daughters. Therefore, it was absolutely impossible for an outsider to know about it. Those three men had no connection to the Wu Family; there was no way they could have invented the detail about the blind date with the Zheng family.
"I didn’t do it, so I won’t admit to it," Wu Qiao Ping said, pressing her lips together.
While Mr. and Mrs. Wu were visiting Wu Qiao Ping, Su Qing and the others also came to the Public Security Bureau to give their statements. Zou Ming happened to be there and greeted Su Qing.
Su Qing asked, "What’s the current status of this case? Is it a difficult investigation?"
"From the looks of it, we still need to find more evidence," Zou Ming replied. "Right now, we only have the testimony of those three witnesses. Wu Qiao Ping keeps saying she was framed and refuses to confess to the murder. The original case was closed as an accidental fall from a cliff, so we don’t have any other useful evidence."
"Wu Qiao Ping’s lips are sealed tight," Su Qing remarked with a slight raise of her eyebrow. At that moment, using the perspective of a plant in the interrogation room, she could already see Wu Qiao Ping with Mr. and Mrs. Wu. More than that, Su Qing could see even more clearly: she saw the smugness hidden deep in Wu Qiao Ping’s eyes.
