Chapter 568 -577: The Pain of Waking Up
He was also puzzled. ‘Didn’t Miss Sterling enter the base with Mr. Magnus before? Why did she leave again?’
And now she’d returned with such a horrifying creature. Everyone avoided these things like the plague, killing them on sight. Why would Miss Sterling go out of her way to bring one back?
Stella Sterling naturally understood their concerns, so in response to the unspoken question, she simply shook her head. “It’s fine.”
After that, she simply waited there, offering no further explanation for the confusion in their eyes.
‘After all, neither she nor Mr. Magnus knew what the result would be. It’s best not to reveal too much until they have a definitive answer.’
Seeing that Stella Sterling wasn’t being forthcoming, the armed personnel from Meridia Base didn’t press the matter, but simply watched her with vigilance.
Or more precisely, they kept a close watch on the mutant in Stella Sterling’s hands.
Just then, the mutant that had been docile in Stella Sterling’s grasp began to stir.
It struggled, and though its body was bound tightly with ropes, it snapped its jaws at Stella Sterling.
Seeing this, the faces of the men from Meridia Base changed, and they shouted urgently, “Miss Sterling, look out!!”
At the same time, they opened fire, intending to eliminate the mutant on the spot.
“Don’t!”
Stella Sterling cried out to stop them. ‘While it wouldn’t be hard for me to catch another mutant, going back and forth would waste more time. I can’t let this one die.’
She grabbed the mutant and dodged the bullet. The men from Meridia Base looked at Stella Sterling in confusion, not understanding why she had done that.
But in the next moment, they saw Miss Sterling deliver a sharp chop to its neck. The mutant instantly fell unconscious, becoming still once more.
They lowered their weapons, breathing a sigh of relief while feeling a sense of awe.
‘Miss Sterling is incredible! To think she’d dare to get so close to a monster like that, and even subdue it so easily.’
Just then, Mr. Magnus rushed over.
When the armed personnel saw Mr. Magnus, they stepped forward to explain the situation, but he was already hurrying toward Stella Sterling. “Sterling, you really caught one! Wonderful! Let’s go, let’s go! We have to hurry!”
He pulled Stella Sterling toward the interior of the base.
The other base members who saw this were dumbfounded. ‘What’s wrong with Mr. Magnus? Miss Sterling is holding such a dangerous creature, yet he’s leading her inside without even asking a single question?’
However, given his status, they didn’t dare say a word.
Stella Sterling and Mr. Magnus soon arrived at Magnus’s laboratory.
She tossed the person she’d captured onto the floor.
Mr. Magnus watched excitedly, injecting the green liquid into the subject’s body. He was both thrilled and worried. “I hope this actually works!”
After that was done, the two of them waited for a reaction.
The man was still tied up, just in case.
“What’s going on? Why isn’t he waking up? Don’t tell me something went wrong!”
After some time had passed, Mr. Magnus looked at the motionless figure on the floor and couldn’t help but voice his concern.
It had already been an hour since the liquid was injected, but the person still hadn’t moved.
He began to worry. ‘Could it be that it didn’t work? Or worse, did it have some side effect that’s killing the person we worked so hard to capture?’
Watching him, Stella Sterling said a bit sheepishly, “Don’t worry, it’s not that something went wrong. I just hit him a little too hard earlier, so he hasn’t woken up yet.”
‘To make sure he was completely unconscious, I didn’t hold back and even used a bit of my lightning. That’s why his body is still in a deep sleep and he hasn’t woken up yet.’
Hearing Stella Sterling’s explanation, Mr. Magnus relaxed a little. He nodded and continued to wait with her.
He was very curious. “Sterling, how did you manage to catch this thing?”
These things attacked people on sight; most people didn’t dare get near them. Even when killing one, they would shoot from a distance rather than risk getting close. Capturing one alive was no easy feat.
His heart had been in his throat the entire time Sterling was gone.
He never imagined she would return so quickly with one in tow.
In response to Mr. Magnus’s question, Stella Sterling calmly replied, “I had just left Meridia Base when I saw a mutant attacking someone nearby. So, I went over, knocked it out, and brought it back.”
Stella Sterling spoke with such simplicity, as if she were talking about something as mundane as eating or drinking.
Mr. Magnus stared at her in amazement. ‘Could it really have been that simple?’
But he could see that Sterling didn’t want to elaborate, so he didn’t press her further.
After an unknown amount of time, the person on the floor finally stirred. His fingers twitched slightly.
Mr. Magnus watched the man nervously, pulling Stella Sterling back to create some distance.
‘We still don’t know what state he’ll be in. Will he have returned to normal, or will he be even more frenzied than before? We have to keep our distance, just in case. If he attacks, we won’t be able to dodge in time.’
Stella Sterling also stepped back, her eyes fixed on the man on the floor. She, too, wanted to see the result. ‘Did the potion work, or not?’
However, compared to the nervous Mr. Magnus, Stella Sterling was far calmer.
Under their watchful eyes, the mutant’s fingers twitched, and then he slowly sat up.
He opened his eyes and looked around in a daze, his gaze gradually clearing. “Where am I? What’s going on?”
Then, as if remembering something, he suddenly began to scream in a frenzied agony. He sat right where he was, shouting “AHHHH!”, his face contorted in anguish as he beat his own head repeatedly.
The moment he woke up and they saw his eyes, both Stella Sterling and Mr. Magnus knew: he had returned to normal. He had the eyes of a normal person, not a mutant.
But soon after, they saw the man crying out in agony. Mr. Magnus took a few more steps back, thinking something had gone wrong.
But as they watched him break down into painful sobs, they understood. Nothing had gone wrong; he was normal now. Even the red in his eyes had faded.
His current state was likely because he remembered everything that had happened after he’d mutated. The memories were too painful for him to accept.
