Chapter 569 -588: Resentment
Mr. Magnus and Stella Sterling fell silent.
They stood to the side, quietly watching the man’s breakdown. They could understand how he felt, so neither of them interfered.
This situation would drive anyone mad. It was impossible to accept.
An unknown amount of time passed, but the man still hadn’t calmed down.
He screamed in agony, repeatedly beating his head and frantically smashing everything around him.
The commotion inside attracted the attention of those outside.
Two people shouted from outside, “Mr. Magnus, Miss Sterling, is something wrong?”
At the same time, footsteps sounded from outside, as if the people out there were about to come in and check on the situation.
Mr. Magnus quickly stopped them. “It’s nothing serious. Just a small incident. Don’t come in!”
Hearing that Mr. Magnus sounded fine, the people outside were relieved and resumed their posts without coming in.
Mr. Magnus gazed at the man in the distance, who was still unable to accept reality. He turned to Stella Sterling, his voice devoid of emotion. “Sterling, you talked about saving those who have already transformed… Is it really a good thing?”
If saving them only meant forcing them to suffer like this, Mr. Magnus began to wonder if what he was doing was right.
Perhaps for people like him, returning to normal wasn’t what they wanted. Perhaps they would rather be dead.
Death would spare them from facing the things they had done, from enduring such immense torment.
After a moment of thought, Stella Sterling replied, “I stand by my original point. Our main objective is to save those who haven’t transformed, or those who have only just begun to.”
“As for these people, by saving them, we’re just giving them a chance to choose. Whether they can’t bear it and give up, or endure the pain and keep living—that is their choice to make.”
She paused for a moment before continuing, “I don’t know what they’ll do, but I know one thing for certain. If we don’t save them, they don’t even have a choice. They can only remain as grotesque monsters, suffering and powerless.”
Mr. Magnus fell silent after hearing Stella Sterling’s words, but the oppressive feeling in his heart had lessened considerably.
He knew Sterling was right. He knew what they were doing wasn’t wrong. After all, besides these transformed individuals who had already committed terrible deeds, there were so many innocent people who still needed saving.
If they didn’t develop this cure, there was no telling how many more people would have to endure this suffering.
So, they weren’t in the wrong.
He had known this all along. It was just that seeing the man before him in such agony made his conscience ache.
He had only asked Sterling because he was looking for a little comfort, a little affirmation.
At this thought, he gave Stella Sterling a slightly embarrassed look. “Sterling, it’s a good thing you’re here. I may be an old man who’s lived for many years, but I still can’t see things as clearly as you do.”
Stella Sterling remained silent. She knew it wasn’t that he couldn’t understand; his feelings were simply complicated.
‘If I hadn’t already lived twice and figured so many things out, perhaps I’d be just like him.’
After some time, the man’s frenzy finally subsided. He slumped to the floor and began to cry again.
Suddenly, he looked over at Stella Sterling and Mr. Magnus, his eyes filled with fury. “Why? Why didn’t you just kill me? Why did you make me remember all of this?!”
He glared at them with resentment, as if they had committed some heinous, unforgivable act against him.
Mr. Magnus met his glare with his own deep-set eyes. His heart trembled, and he took two steps back. “I’m sorry, but—”
Before he could finish his sentence, the man charged furiously toward Mr. Magnus, looking as if he was going to kill him.
However, before he could touch Mr. Magnus, Stella Sterling took him down.
The man fell to the ground but still thrashed wildly, trying to attack them. Stella Sterling just watched him calmly. “Are you blaming us for saving you? If it weren’t for us, you would have remained a grotesque monster.”
The man’s struggles ceased.
Stella Sterling’s voice continued, “If I hadn’t stopped you earlier, you would have attacked your own close friend.”
“If we hadn’t saved you, hadn’t restored your sanity, you would have become nothing more than a bloodthirsty monster. More people you care about might have died by your hand. Would you have wanted to go on like that?”
Hearing Stella Sterling’s words, the man gradually grew calm. He sobbed, “I don’t want that. I don’t want to hurt the people close to me. I never wanted to become that kind of monster!”
As he spoke, his voice grew tinged with bitterness.
He knew these two had helped him, but when he remembered that he had already killed one of his comrades, his body began to tremble.
This was a brother with whom he shared a life-and-death bond. They had fought side-by-side in this apocalypse, promising to be brothers for life. But now, one of his closest brothers had died at his own hands.
He refused to accept it. The very thought was agonizing.
Stella Sterling looked at the tormented man on the floor.
‘If this were before,’ she thought, ‘I wouldn’t have felt anything. I might have even told him coldly that if he truly couldn’t accept it, he could always choose to kill himself.’
But now, for some reason, Stella Sterling couldn’t say such a thing. The words on the tip of her tongue changed. “It wasn’t your fault.”
After saying this, Stella Sterling fell silent. She really didn’t know what to say to comfort someone.
In the past, she wouldn’t have felt anything about this. She could understand his pain, but she wouldn’t have thought him completely blameless.
Whether he was in control or not, the fact remained that he had killed someone close to him with his own hands. That was why Stella Sterling would normally not have tried to console him.
But now, she realized she had changed a great deal. Seeing him like this, she found herself at a loss for words, offering a rare moment of consolation.
The man fell silent. After a long moment, he finally said, “I’m sorry, I lost my composure just now. And… thank you. I know you’re the ones who made me human again.”
After speaking, he stood up and continued, “Thank you. But now… I have something I need to do. May I leave?”
‘I’ve done something like this… I have to go see the brother I killed. I have to atone, to go down and be with him.’
‘And my other brothers… I want to see them one last time. We’ll never have another chance to fight side-by-side again. This will be the last time.’
‘As for me… I killed my own brother. No matter what, I will not allow myself to live on.’
