Chapter 573 -582: Causing Trouble
The people before him looked as if they had aged considerably.
Stella Sterling said, “Chief Ford, there’s no need to worry. With his skills, he’s probably just run into a small problem. He’ll be fine. I’ve already had my people keep an eye out for news about him.”
Chief Ford nodded.
He looked at Stella Sterling, his eyes filled with fondness and admiration.
She was even more brilliant and capable than he had imagined. His son certainly had good taste.
Next, Mr. Magnus performed another quick examination on Chief Ford. The virus in his body had been cleared.
“Chief, it’s wonderful that you’re all right. There are so many things at the base that require your leadership,”
Mr. Magnus said excitedly.
Hearing this, Chief Ford’s expression tightened.
For the past while, he had either been in a coma or delirious when conscious, so he knew nothing about what had happened outside.
But from the sound of Mr. Magnus’s words, he could guess that something must have happened within the base. Otherwise, Mr. Magnus wouldn’t be acting this way.
He said, “What happened at the base while I was unconscious? And what was going on with me? Why did I become like this after that person bit me? Have you figured out the reason for all this?”
Mr. Magnus fell silent for a moment, then told Chief Ford everything that had happened during this time, including the reason for his condition.
The Chief would have to find out sooner or later; it couldn’t be hidden.
Besides, the Chief needed to understand the situation now so he could deal with those in the base who harbored ill intentions.
“Chief, the reason you turned into… that… was because you were infected by one of the mutated. There are many such cases outside now. We and several other bases have sent out armed personnel to clean them up, but the number of mutated is still increasing. Several bases have already fallen!”
Upon hearing this, Chief Ford fell silent. He never imagined so much could have happened while he was unconscious.
The outside world had turned into a living hell.
At this thought, Chief Ford seemed to age another ten years in an instant.
In this apocalyptic world, human survival was already difficult enough, with one disaster after another. But to think something like this would happen now—people turning on and slaughtering each other. That was the cruelest part.
He closed his eyes, an air of sorrow settling over him.
Stella Sterling offered a casual word of comfort, “Don’t worry about the situation outside. A cure has been developed. As long as we can mass-produce it and inject it into those who haven’t mutated yet, we can stop the number of mutations from increasing!”
“As for those who have already mutated—you’ve seen for yourself—this medicine can save them too. It won’t be long before this whole thing is resolved!”
Mr. Magnus nodded along. “That’s right, Chief. You can rest easy on that front. The cure has been developed. We also know where to find the ingredients. Just give it a little more time, and we’ll have the situation under control. You don’t need to worry!”
“The priority right now is for you to pull yourself together. You haven’t made an appearance in a while, and I’ve been cooped up in the lab. Those vultures have their suspicions, and they’re getting restless. Now that you’re awake, you can finally deal with them properly!”
Mr. Magnus spoke urgently. He knew the Chief was worried about the outside world, but they had a solution for that now. For everything else, they could only act after the cure was mass-produced. There was no point in rushing it now.
The most pressing matter was for the Chief to handle the internal affairs of the base first. Only by dealing with those few people with ill intentions could they stabilize things internally.
Once the base was stable, they could deal with the outside problems more quickly.
Chief Ford understood this. He took a few deep breaths and said to Mr. Magnus, “Mr. Morton, don’t worry. I won’t let this take me down!”
After speaking, he turned to Stella Sterling. “Sterling, it’s just as I said. We owe you for this. Otherwise, who knows how long this tragedy would have continued, or how many more would have had to die before it ended!”
With our current firepower, dealing with the already mutated isn’t difficult. The hard part was figuring out what to do with those who were infected but hadn’t turned yet.
We’d have no psychological burden killing the fully mutated. But the thought of having to eliminate those who were still human… that was a true form of torture.
But now that the cure has been developed, we don’t have to worry about that anymore.
On this point, Sterling really did a great thing. She saved a lot of people.
Stella Sterling shook her head. “No need to thank me. This is my responsibility, too. I’m not just helping others, I’m helping myself.”
‘After all, if humanity were wiped out, how boring would life be?’
Besides, she was right. This matter wasn’t Meridia Base’s responsibility, so they really didn’t need to thank her.
Chief Ford smiled and was about to speak, but a commotion erupted outside.
“Where’s Mr. Magnus? Get Mr. Magnus out here! Where on earth is the Chief? We want to see the Chief!”
“Chief, don’t tell me something’s happened to him! Mr. Magnus, what have you done to the Chief?!”
“I heard the Chief was infected too, that he’s already become one of the mutated. I didn’t believe it before, but he hasn’t shown his face this whole time. Don’t tell me it’s true?”
“The mutated don’t distinguish friend from foe—all they know is biting! We deal with mutated like that directly. As the leader of our base, the Chief should be setting an example!”
The voices outside were a clamor. Several people had gathered outside the lab, demanding that Mr. Magnus come out, but they were being blocked by his subordinates.
But the racket didn’t stop. Clearly, they were determined not to leave until they saw Mr. Magnus and Chief Ford.
Mr. Magnus’s face darkened. ‘Speak of the devil.’ It seemed they couldn’t wait any longer.
Hearing them clamoring to kill the Chief, Mr. Magnus’s expression grew even more grim. He exchanged a look with Chief Ford.
Mr. Magnus said, “Chief, I’ll go out and see what’s happening. You just focus on resting and getting your strength back.”
Before, Mr. Magnus had been worried he wouldn’t be able to keep the Chief’s situation under wraps, but now that the Chief was back to normal, he no longer had to fear those people.
And now, it was about time to get rid of them. If these people hadn’t been constantly stirring up trouble, he could have focused entirely on researching the cure.
But these people just couldn’t stay put. At a time when everyone should be uniting to face the crisis, they were only thinking about seizing power. ‘People like that deserve to die!’
