Apocalypse Rebirth: Crazy from Day One

Chapter 572: Awkward

Chapter 572 -581: Awkward

The two of them didn’t say a word, but Chief Ford understood.

He chuckled. “Don’t look at me like that, you two. I know you were both doing what’s best for me. I don’t blame you!”

He couldn’t remember it all clearly, but he had vague impressions of his rampage.

He had lost his mind back then, unable to tell friend from foe, attacking anyone on sight.

If he hadn’t been subdued, he would have only ended up hurting people.

That was the last thing he would have wanted.

So, of course, he understood why they did what they did.

Hearing Chief Ford say this, Mr. Magnus breathed a sigh of relief. Although he and the Chief were on excellent terms, a leader was still a leader.

The thought of his superior finding out what he’d done had left him feeling more than a little uneasy.

After hearing that the Chief didn’t blame him in the slightest, the heart that had been lodged in his throat finally settled back into place.

He said, “Honestly, Chief, we really had no other choice. You were completely out of your mind. We had to do it to keep you from killing someone. Given your character, I knew you’d never want to hurt anyone!”

Mr. Magnus was quick to shower him with praise.

Seeing this, Stella Sterling raised an eyebrow and couldn’t stop herself from facepalming.

‘These people look so powerful and important, always putting on the airs of elders and superiors, but in private, they act just like children.’

‘Then again,’ she thought, ‘what Mr. Magnus said wasn’t pure flattery. Knowing Chief Ford’s character, he probably wouldn’t forgive himself if he learned he’d hurt someone while he was out of his mind.’

At that moment, Mr. Magnus continued, “And Sterling is the one who’s truly incredible! Chief, when you went berserk, you weren’t like the others. Even iron chains couldn’t hold you. Toward the end, the sedatives had no effect on you at all. You’d be back on your feet almost as soon as we injected you, and your strength was just immense!”

“Short of shooting you dead, subduing you in that state was next to impossible. Only Sterling had that kind of ability. If it weren’t for her, I honestly don’t know what we would have done!”

Stella Sterling, who had been listening from the side, felt her lips twitch as Mr. Magnus praised her. She wished he hadn’t felt the need to be quite so detailed.

This wasn’t exactly credit she was eager to take.

When she saw Chief Ford look her way, Stella Sterling avoided his gaze, humming a little tune and letting her eyes wander elsewhere.

Chief Ford watched her and chuckled. “Sterling, you’re the incredible one. It’s all thanks to you. You’re truly fierce!”

As he spoke, his eyes filled with admiration, but also a hint of worry.

‘So it really was this girl who beat me up,’ he thought. ‘She certainly is fierce.’

‘I just hope she doesn’t decide to get physical with me again now that I’m back to normal.’

‘My whole body still aches. It just goes to show how merciless she was.’

Stella Sterling turned to look at him, thought for a moment, and decided to offer an explanation. “Well, I didn’t have much of a choice at the time!”

It was only then that Mr. Magnus seemed to remember something. He slapped his forehead and quickly chimed in, “Chief, you can’t blame the girl! Everything she did was for your own good. Given your condition at the time, if she hadn’t used some serious force, there’s no way she could have subdued you. Let me be clear: if it had become a true crisis with no other choice, I would have had to shoot you. So when you get right down to it, what Sterling did… she saved your life!”

At this, Mr. Magnus slapped his own head again in frustration.

‘All I wanted was to praise Sterling in front of the Chief,’ he thought, ‘to show him how incredible and skilled she is.’

‘But in the heat of the moment, I completely forgot that these two might become family in the future.’

‘If Gordon Ford and Sterling really end up together, the Chief will be her elder.’

‘Even though it was for a good cause, won’t they feel awkward later, thinking about how Sterling once beat up an elder?’

‘No wonder Sterling had that reaction just now.’

Seeing Stella Sterling’s slightly embarrassed expression, Chief Ford burst out laughing. “I don’t blame her, not at all! Of course I know she was doing it for my own good. How could I possibly blame her? I haven’t even had a chance to thank her properly!”

He wasn’t the kind of person who couldn’t recognize when someone was helping him. He knew she had done it for his own good, and that she’d had no other choice.

But seeing her reaction now made him feel a little happy for his son.

He knew that if she truly didn’t care about his son at all, she wouldn’t be reacting this way.

At this thought, his expression suddenly darkened. He turned to Mr. Magnus. “Mr. Morton, is there still no news of that boy, Gordon Ford?”

The smile on Mr. Magnus’s face froze. He looked at the Chief’s worried expression and finally shook his head. “None.”

Stella Sterling looked at Chief Ford. “Chief Ford, did Gordon Ford say anything to you before he went missing?”

Hearing her question, Chief Ford looked back at Stella Sterling with a complicated expression.

Seeing his look, Stella Sterling frowned.

Then, Chief Ford shook his head and said, “When he woke up after his illness, the very first thing he asked about was you.”

“What did he ask you?”

Chief Ford looked at her. “He asked me if you were still alive.”

At this, Chief Ford shook his head again. “I have no idea what got into that boy. Ever since he woke up, he just hasn’t been right. The things he said were all jumbled and incoherent.”

What confused him even more was why his son would suddenly ask if Sterling was still alive.

He’d just seen her not long before, so why would he ask such a bizarre question out of the blue?

He added, “Maybe it was because you were gone for a while before. I suppose he must have had a bad dream and was worried, so that’s why he asked.”

He couldn’t think of any other reason.

Hearing this, Stella Sterling froze. Something flashed through her mind, but she couldn’t quite grasp it.

Her fingers intertwined unconsciously. “Did he say anything else?”

“I don’t remember clearly. Just a lot of strange talk. Then he said he was going to Mirefall to check on something, to confirm some things. After that, the boy just vanished.”

As he said this, Chief Ford fell silent.

‘Including the time I was out of commission, the boy has been missing for over a month now without a single word,’ he thought.

How could he not be worried sick?
