Chapter 577 -586: The Unlucky One
The message was sent, and two hours later, Chief Ford arrived at Caeluna Base.
The man’s status was no small matter, so his arrival drew the attention of Caeluna Base’s other high-ranking officials. Word of his visit quickly reached Stella Sterling.
Stella Sterling welcomed them into her villa and had Stephen Lawrence prepare some fruit and pastries.
Mr. Magnus had come along as well.
Mr. Magnus gazed at the fresh fruit and pastries laid out before him, a hint of envy in his voice. “Sterling, you’re living much better than an old man like me!”
Even as a high-ranking official at Meridia Base, he rarely got to eat such things.
Yet Sterling had brought them out just to entertain her guests.
Mr. Magnus suddenly found his mouth watering.
Stella Sterling smiled. “Well, I had to bring out the good stuff for my honored guests, didn’t I?”
‘Of course, I eat these whenever I want. It’s not just me, either. I give them out to the members of Caeluna Base once a month as a bonus.’
‘I’m strict with them on a daily basis, but I never skimp on the benefits they deserve.’
‘All the food I’ve stored in my space isn’t just for decoration; it’s meant for people to eat.’
Hearing this, Mr. Magnus shot Stella Sterling a teasing glance. “Oh, is that so? I don’t remember getting this kind of treatment the last time I visited.”
With that, he turned to Chief Ford. “See, Chief? The girl clearly likes you better. She’s treating you completely differently than she treats me!”
Stella Sterling feigned a frown. “Now, Mr. Magnus, you’re hurting my feelings. Wasn’t it just that things were too urgent last time? I didn’t have a chance to host you properly.”
Chief Ford burst out laughing. “Exactly! Magnus, don’t be so petty. Sterling isn’t the type to play favorites!”
After they shared a laugh, Chief Ford’s expression turned serious. He looked at Stella Sterling, his voice tense. “Sterling, you sent word that you have news about my boy, Gordon. Is it true?”
Urgency filled his eyes. His son had been missing for nearly six months—a full half-year without a single word. How could a father not be worried?
Over the past six months, he had imagined every terrible outcome possible.
He was gradually beginning to lose hope.
Then, out of the blue, Sterling sent word that she had a lead on Gordon. How could he not be thrilled?!
‘News means he’s still alive. As long as he’s alive, that’s all that matters. There’s still hope. It’s better than staring into darkness.’
He looked at Stella Sterling, his expression a mixture of excitement, anticipation, and dread, terrified of what bad news she might deliver.
Seeing his state, Stella Sterling didn’t hold back. She told him everything she had learned from Mr. Cheney.
Hearing that Gordon Ford was really still alive, Chief Ford wept with joy.
Then, his relief gave way to confusion. “I know of Miles Sanctus—he’s the leader of Sanctyr Base. But who is this Caleb Xavier? From what you’re saying, it sounds like Gordon fell into his hands? That he was kidnapped by him?”
The name was completely unfamiliar to Chief Ford; he’d never heard it before.
And now he was learning his son had fallen into this stranger’s clutches.
He was baffled and shocked. He knew his son’s capabilities well; an ordinary person couldn’t have gotten the better of him.
What kind of power did this Caleb Xavier possess to not only capture his son but also erase his tracks so thoroughly that they couldn’t find a single clue for almost half a year?
Hearing this, Stella Sterling wasn’t sure how to respond.
‘They don’t know who Caleb Xavier is, but I do. I can’t tell them that he’s likely been reborn. And I can’t explain the potential grudge he has against Gordon.’
Mr. Magnus spoke up. “Chief, who this person is isn’t the most important thing right now. We have a lead on Gordon’s whereabouts, so we need to focus on rescuing him as quickly as possible.”
Chief Ford nodded. “You’re right. Now that we have a location, things are much more straightforward.”
At this point, Stella Sterling interjected, “I have intel on them. Let me handle this. I only told you so you could stop worrying, but I need you to entrust this matter to me.”
From what I know of Caleb Xavier, he’s extremely cautious. If we make too much noise, we’ll alert him. He’ll move Gordon, and finding him again will be nearly impossible.
‘Hearing this, Chief Ford felt a bit awkward. Was it right to leave this entire matter for Sterling to handle by herself?’
Sensing his hesitation, Stella Sterling said, “Sometimes, having more people involved does more harm than good. I… know him, in a way. From what I understand, he’s an extremely cautious person. The second he suspects something is off, he’ll raise his defenses, and that will work against us. I already have a plan. Leave it to me. You just need to lay low and have your people continue the pretense of searching for him.”
Hearing her say this, Chief Ford could only nod. “Sterling… thank you.”
He was truly grateful to Stella Sterling from the bottom of his heart.
If not for her, he would still have no idea where his son was. After more than six months without a single word about the boy, he’d started to believe the worst, and despair had begun to set in.
He never imagined that after all this time, Sterling had never given up—that she was still searching for Gordon. He was deeply moved by her loyalty.
“Don’t mention it,” Stella Sterling said, her head slightly bowed. “Truth be told, I have my own score to settle with this person. This is a good chance to take care of it all at once.”
‘Based on my calculations, after I died, Caleb Xavier must have lived for many more years before he finally died and was reborn. After all that time, he’s probably forgotten all about an old “friend” like me.’
‘To the man he is now, my past self was just a nobody, not even worth remembering.’
‘He probably never even gave me a second thought, which is why he hasn’t come looking for me since he was reborn.’
‘That’s even better. It makes things more interesting!’
‘I can’t wait to see the look on his face when we meet again. This time, I’ll be sure to give him a very special surprise.’
Mr. Magnus and Chief Ford exchanged a glance. For some reason, as they looked at the smiling young woman before them, they found her expression a little terrifying, as if she were plotting something.
They couldn’t imagine who the unlucky target of her scheming was, but it seemed that person was in for a very bad time.
