Chapter 578 -587: Caleb Xavier
Caleb Xavier was the unlucky guy those two had been talking about, but he had no idea what they were thinking.
Right now, Caleb Xavier and Miles Sanctus were lounging comfortably on the leather sofas of a bar.
This place had once been a famous private club, but after the apocalypse began, it was abandoned. Caleb had taken it over as his base of operations.
He raised his glass of red wine and clinked it against the one held by Miles Sanctus, who sat opposite him. “These past few months have been quite fruitful. Let’s celebrate!”
“Indeed. I’m actually starting to believe you were reborn. Otherwise, how could you possibly know where to find so much food!”
Miles Sanctus smiled, his eyes narrowing as he watched the refined, gentle-looking man with a sense of wonder.
‘This man had found me a few months ago and carried me away while I was injured.’
‘Then he’d spouted a bunch of nonsense, claiming he was someone who had been reborn and asking me to cooperate with him so the two of them could one day rule the world.’
‘At the time, hearing those words, he just thought the man was insane, that something was wrong with his head.’
‘He’d also found the idea laughable. This man actually wanted to rule the world—his ambition was far too vast.’
‘Even when I commanded a powerful faction like the Sanctyr Foundation, I had never dreamed of ruling the world alone.’
‘But this man actually dared to think it. His appetite was so big, wasn’t he afraid of biting off more than he could chew?’
‘And this man, Caleb Xavier, had no real base, not much firepower, and little food to his name.’
‘Even his base of operations was just a club that could be destroyed by a disaster at any moment. There was no security whatsoever.’
‘And yet, he still dared to make such grandiose claims. It was enough to make anyone laugh their head off.’
‘The only thing about him that I took seriously was that he, too, had somehow developed the Human Body Warriors.’
‘At first, I thought Dr. Quinn had betrayed me, secretly using Sanctyr Base’s resources while actually working for someone else.’
‘But I soon discovered that while these Human Body Warriors looked similar to the ones Dr. Quinn had developed, they were much more powerful.’
‘They seemed like an upgraded version of the ones from my own base.’
‘In comparison, Dr. Quinn’s Human Body Warriors seemed like garbage.’
‘I didn’t know how this man had gotten his hands on such a thing.’
‘But their existence did indeed make me see this stranger in a new light.’
‘Although I found the man’s bold claims ridiculous, I hadn’t left. Instead, I chose to cooperate with him for the time being.’
‘I never expected that this man, just as he claimed, really could predict future events.’
‘There were some discrepancies in the timing, but the events Caleb had spoken of did indeed happen.’
‘During the recent mutation incident, we captured quite a few of those mutated individuals for research, turning them into new Human Body Warriors.’
‘The Human Body Warriors created from those mutants, who already possessed powerful attacks post-mutation, were even more formidable.’
‘Furthermore, we exploited the chaos to reap significant benefits.’
‘We used the incident to attack and break through many smaller bases, seizing their weapons and food for ourselves.’
‘This made me harbor a secret admiration for the man; he was truly capable.’
‘When I first met him, the man had nothing. But in just a few months, his stockpile of weapons and food had grown immensely.’
‘And that was what made me start to believe that he had truly been reborn, even though it still felt like something out of a fairy tale.’
“Of course. I have no reason to lie to you, do I? Look, in just a short time, the foundation we’ve built is in no way inferior to your Sanctyr Base!”
“And as I said, we’ll split everything we’ve gained these past days fifty-fifty!”
Caleb Xavier smiled at Miles Sanctus and drained his glass in one gulp.
A faint smile lingered on his face. He had a gentle demeanor that was very approachable, easily making others lower their guard.
But having spent the last few months with him, Miles Sanctus knew full well that the man before him was a venomous snake, with a heart even more ruthless than his own.
He leaned back. “Hmph. You’ve certainly proven yourself, and you have the strength to back it up. So, I’m willing to work with you. But I’m curious—if you’re reborn and so capable on your own, why choose to cooperate with me?”
“Because you are strong. And cooperating with the strong is a pleasure!”
Caleb Xavier said with a laugh.
Miles Sanctus was noncommittal in response. He had never once doubted his own abilities.
Besides, he had vaguely heard from the other man that in the decades to come, both he and Caleb would be juggernauts in the apocalyptic world.
‘But he didn’t quite believe that reason.’
‘Even if I’m strong, this man’s power is not to be underestimated. There was no need for him to cooperate with me.’
‘People like us never submit to one another; we all want to be kings in our own right.’
‘There are only so many resources in this apocalyptic world. The man had no reason to help me. In fact, he should have taken the opportunity to eliminate me while I was down and out, removing a major threat. That would have been the logical move.’
Seeing Miles Sanctus’s attitude, Caleb Xavier smiled, his gaze turning serious. “You don’t need to doubt my sincerity. I have no hostility toward you. The reason I sought you out for cooperation is that we have a common enemy!”
Hearing this, Miles Sanctus raised an eyebrow. “This ‘common enemy’ you speak of… are you referring to that Gordon Ford you’re holding captive?”
At the mention of Gordon Ford, Miles’s expression grew complicated. He had met the man back at Sanctyr Base and had briefly crossed hands with him, only to suffer a defeat.
He was no simple character. To think he had now fallen into Caleb Xavier’s hands.
Caleb Xavier nodded. At the thought of Gordon Ford, a shadow of gloom flickered in his eyes.
The look vanished in an instant, too fast to catch.
But Miles Sanctus had seen it clearly, and he was inwardly shocked.
‘I’ve witnessed this man’s capabilities over the past few days. I never thought he would regard this Gordon Ford with such gravity.’
He asked, “For you to consider him an enemy… was he a major rival of yours before you were reborn?”
Caleb Xavier’s expression had returned to normal. He looked at Miles Sanctus with a teasing glint in his eye. “He’s not just my enemy. He’s a major enemy of yours, too!”
“Let me put it this way: in the future, the world pretty much belonged to the three of us. In fact, he even had a slight edge over the two of us!”
